QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Smith shows support for Flacco

There was concern that second-year quarterback Troy Smith would be unhappy backing up rookie Joe Flacco and might undermine him because Smith was a favorite of the players.
If that's happening, I didn't see it today. Smith seemed comfortable with his role and was very supportive of Flacco.
In fact, Smith said he was pulling for Flacco because he was the starter. Smith seemed very honest and genuine in his statements.

Baltimore Ravens | News | Smith Happy to Be Back

Article about Troy getting back on the practice field.

The best thing about Smith has always been his maturity. He understands that he is not healthy and ready to go just yet, so he is greatful to have a good QB in there (replacing what would have been his job) making plays and getting the dubya. He is very much about team first. Also, he seems to not carry an attitude with being on scout team, which is a plus. Its like when he was waiting to take over for Zwick in 04. He knew what he could do if put in, but he didnt make a huge media splash about it.

Gotta love the guys desire to succeed.

Yeah. I seem to recall some derisive comments about no-scramble rules in scrimmages and puppet strings.

The comments now are amazing though. Quite possibly Daniel's & Tressel's best coaching job ever, while simultaneously being evidence of the deconstruction of recruits into an army of mini-JTs, which has wound up being possibly the teams' biggest problem the past two years.

Smith's role
By Dan Kolko on October 3, 2008

Now that he's close to fully recovered from his tonsil infection, Troy Smith is back practicing with the team in a full capacity. The only question is, what are the Ravens going to do with him?

The former Heisman Trophy winner was the front-runner for Baltimore's starting quarterback job in the preseason, but Joe Flacco was thrust into the role when Smith came down with his infection and Kyle Boller injured his shoulder. Flacco has played well in the first three games of the season, and it's clear that the Ravens will stick with their "quarterback of the future" unless he gets injured or completely falls apart.

With that said, Smith is a great athlete and used his speed and running ability to his advantage when he played at Ohio State. When asked about Smith's role with the team this year, head coach John Harbaugh seemed to open the door to the idea of using Smith in a non-traditional role.

"We can definitely envision Troy playing," Harbaugh said. "Troy's a really good football player. He's proven that. And he's going to be on the field for us this year in some form or fashion, for sure."

Ravens' Smith Will Dress For Titans Game
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ―

The Ravens say backup quarterback Troy Smith will dress for Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans.

The team, however, has not decided if he will be the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback. Todd Bouman is the other backup.

Smith has regained most of the 20 pounds he lost while recovering from a severe case of tonsillitis that has sidelined him since the middle of the preseason. He has begun practicing with the team and is not on this week's injury report.

Coach John Harbaugh says he has not ruled out playing Smith this season, even though rookie Joe Flacco has played well in his first three games. Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron isn't ruling out using Smith at a position other than quarterback.

I hope they're not trying to turn him into another Cordell...Troy is a QB!

Anyway, great to see that Troy will be back in uniform this week!

There is one note-worthy similarity between Troy and Kordell. Namely, the ability to ruin a UM fan's day. :groove:

Glad to hear he's getting better.
