QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Ravens to start Flacco, look at Harrington, Simms, Bouman

The Baltimore Ravens will go with a rookie at quarterback in their opener on Sunday and due to injuries are still looking for depth at the position.

Joe Flacco, the 18th pick overall, will launch his NFL career against the Cincinnati Bengals. There is a chance the two other quarterbacks competing for the job, Troy Smith and Kyle Boller, both will not be available as backups.

"It wouldn't be realistic to have one of those two guys as a starter, for sure. If they can back up, I think that would be an upset," coach John Harbaugh said Monday.

Smith is still feeling the effects of infected tonsils and Boller has a sore shoulder that could ultimately require surgery. In an effort to add depth, the Ravens worked out quarterbacks Chris Simms, Joey Harrington and Todd Bouman on Monday.

Source: Ravens to sign QB Bouman to one-year deal

Veteran Todd Bouman, one of three veterans to work out for the Ravens Tuesday, accepted a one-year offer to sign with the team, a source said.

Bouman worked out Monday in Baltimore against Chris Simms and Joey Harrington. On Tuesday morning, he was offered a one-year deal at $830,000.

The 36-year-old Bouman will be joining his sixth team. He was an undrafted quarterback when he signed with Vikings in 1997. He's been in Minnesota, New Orleans, Green Bay, Jacksonville and St. Louis.

The Ravens named Joe Flacco as the starting quarterback Monday but have injury concerns with Troy Smith and Kyle Boller. Smith has infected tonsils and Boller has a torn labrum in his shoulder and might need surgery.

Well, the QB situation could be worse ? right?

David Steele September 4, 2008Kyle Boller wasn't in the locker room at the Castle early yesterday afternoon, not surprising because he likely had not known for long that his season, and probably his Ravens career, was over. Troy Smith wasn't in the locker room, largely because he isn't close to returning to practice. Todd Bouman wasn't in the locker room at that point, probably because he had barely been an official member of the team for more than a few hours, if that.

Eventually, though, Smith will return and the carousel will start again. Yet the fact that no one knows when that will be is itself another oddity. Injury is almost easy to account for; illness, not so much. Unlike if he were dealing with a pulled muscle or torn ligament, Smith's timetable is as indefinite as it gets.

He still deserves a chance to pick up where he left off, and you can imagine coach John Harbaugh pulling his hair out if Flacco is playing well when Smith does come back.

My goodness. stated by espn but not only does he have a viral infection that only 100 people NATIONWIDE have gotten in the past year but he has also lost 30 pounds from it. thats gotta be worth a prayer man, thats gotta be tough to come back from. Troy will though and overthrow that rook Flacco. I have no doubt!

Really nice highlight clip of Troy. It's only been a couple years, but I'd almost forgot how amazing Troy was in the pocket. His ability to keep a play alive and sense pressure was rare. He made everyone around him look good. Ah the memories! Here's looking forward to seeing this type of highlight clip for TP in a few years!

What a freakin awesome player. Man I miss having him as our QB.

I can only imagine how much better of a team OSU would be with a guy like that under center.

Here's to hoping that TP can bring back the magic that Troy once blessed Buckeye Nation with...

Ravens' Smith cleared to work out as he recovers from infection

Updated: September 16, 2008, 10:57 AM ET

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Troy Smith has been cleared to resume light workouts after losing about 20 pounds due to complications from what began as a severe case of tonsillitis.
Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, has been fighting a blood clot in his neck, which led to an infection in his lung. He has not practiced with the Ravens since Aug. 22.
Dr. Andrew Tucker, the Ravens' head team physician, said Monday that Smith's illness was "extraordinarily unlucky."
"It's a rare complication of a very severe tonsilar infection. Ironically, this type of problem, although rare, does happen most commonly in young, healthy people like Troy," Tucker said, according to the Carroll County (Md.) Times. "Troy is someone who's young, who's healthy, has a normal immune system, normal heart and lungs. Troy's health was never in danger. He was never critically ill."
