QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Flacco ended up being 18-37 and 152 yards. His total net yards per pass was 3.6 yards (Figured with sacks included)
I'd say Flacco didn't slide past Smith with that performance.
Can't believe they didn't play Boller at all. I'd say it's pretty safe to assume he's out of the race based on that. Troy will get his shot next week.

I think they pretty much know what they have with Boller by now. I'd say it's more a matter to putting Flacco against another teams number ones and just getting him as much playing time as possible to see how he does. Obviously since he was drafted in the first round they think he's the future of this team so they probably thought it was a good chance to give him as much experience as possible. If you're not going to start Boller then what's there really to learn if you put Boller out there at the end against the Rams' third string? Hopefully Troy gets another shot next week and can earn the job.

Mosher: Rhome fine-tunes Ravens' Smith

AROUND THE NFL ? By GEOFF MOSHER ? August 24, 2008

Ravens coach John Harbaugh cut the suspense earlier last week with his announcement that Troy Smith had earned the keys to the first-team offense Saturday night against St. Louis.
Although Smith wasn't able to start Saturday night due to illness, Jerry Rhome had waited for that announcement for more than a year.
Rhome, who played quarterback seven years for four different NFL teams, is the guy amateur quarterbacks seek out when they need a quick tutorial before they're ready for the draft.
Rhome is considered a guru of sorts. His former prot?g?s comprise a who's-who list of greats, including Troy Aikman, Joe Theisman, Warren Moon, Steve McNair and Doug Williams.
His specialty is helping kids with roots in gimmicky college offenses adapt to the professional offenses of the NFL.
Vince Young and Kevin Kolb each sought Rhome's services before they were drafted.
So did Smith, the former Heisman champion who engineered the Ohio State spread offense that earned the Buckeyes a spot in the BCS title game against Florida two years ago.
While scouts dismissed Smith's quarterback pedigree -- he was the 37th pick in the fifth round -- Rhome recognized Smith's pro potential immediately.

Kind of a drag that Troy missed the start last night. Going out there and even just playing decently probably would have cemented him as the starter for at least the first half of the season. Considering Flacco played so long, there will be at least some people in Baltimore clamoring for him to be the opening day starter I'm sure.

not to wish bad things on Flacco, but for Troy's case it's good that Flacco didn't go out and have a 158 passer rating and set the world on fire.

The article quoting Jerry Rhome is great ---- please let's hope Troy gets an honest shot. then he'll have nothing to complain about.

Somehow I think he will do fine.

Joe's performance on Saturday wasn't terrible. He showed flashes of accuracy and his arm strength continues to impress me, but I do think the majority of you are correct when saying he wont supplant Troy in the starting job.

I was completely bewildered when I didn't see Boller take the field. The coaching staff just a few days ago said he was in competition for the starting job. I'm curious to see why the coaches changed their minds in such short notice.

Hopefully Troy gets better and we see a bit of him next week.

Smith safe port in this storm

Sometimes the devil you know isn't actually better than the devil you don't know.

With Troy Smith, you don't have much of a track record on which to base a decision. That helps the Ravens in this way: He hasn't taken the beating Kyle Boller has, become known for soul-crushing turnovers the way Boller has or inspired widespread skepticism the way Boller has.

What Smith has done in a short time is carry himself like a field general, presenting an aura of command in and out of the huddle that true starters must have. He hasn't been in position to make a lot of decisions under fire, but when he has, they have not been the disastrous, drive-killing, forehead-slapping variety.

On the contrary, he has not acted rattled very often, if at all, and projects calmness rather than jitters and jumps. That will come in handy with an offense that bears all the signs of being in constant chaos. We've already seen what Boller does under similar conditions.

That's not much of an endorsement. Then again, this isn't much of a competition.

Smith misses practice, Thursday role unclear
Harbaugh says QB taking antibiotics, may still start preseason finale vs. Falcons
By Jamison Hensley | Sun reporter
August 25, 2008

Troy Smith remained out of practice today with an illness, but coach John Harbaugh said the former Heisman Trophy winner could be the Ravens' starting quarterback for Thursday's preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons.

"We expect him to be ready to play but that's not for certain," Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh said that Smith's tonsil has "swollen up" but didn't know if the second-year quarterback had tonsillitis. He indicated that Smith was taking antibiotics while staying away from team headquarters.

If Smith is able to start, he is expected to receive extended playing time. He was supposed to play three quarters Saturday before getting sick.

Harbaugh didn't want to put an exact figure on how long Smith would play.

"I'd say at least a quarter and a half and take it from there," Harbaugh said.

If Smith can't play, the Ravens would like to start Boller. But Boller is still dealing with an injury to his throwing shoulder.

Smith feels better, but remains questionable for Falcons game ~ August 27, 2008
Boller could be lost for the year with shoulder injury

OWINGS MILLS -- Troy Smith didn't practice again due to an energy-sapping issue involving his tonsils, and the former Heisman Trophy quarterback is expected to be a game-time decision for Thursday night's preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons.

Behind the scenes, there have been indications that Smith plans to play as his health is improving with the use of antibiotics even though there's still concern about whether he will be well enough to run the offense and call the plays because of a weakened voice.

Rookie first-round pick Joe Flacco took every snap in practice for the second consecutive day, boosting the chances that he may have to play the entire game as the lone healthy quarterback if Smith doesn't recover in time.

"We'll know before the game, but it could go up to the game," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said regarding Smith's potential starting availability. "It just depends on how fast he gets his strength back. You would love to be able to predict it and say, 'Hey, we know what's going to happen,' but there's just no way to know. We want him to play and he wants to play."

Smith attended meetings Tuesday morning, but Harbaugh said he didn't feel well enough to remain at the training complex for the entire day. He indicated that Smith is dealing with dehydration after not being able to keep fluids down in the days leading up to and after a 24-10 loss to the St. Louis Rams that he was sidelined for.

" Troy is getting better, but he's just so drained and dehydrated," Harbaugh said. "He hasn't been able to eat for four days or something like that. He was in the meetings this morning, but he just didn't have the energy to go through the rest of the day."

Boller seeks second opinion

Now we know why Boller didn't play against the Rams. Boller hurt his shoulder against the Vikings and can't lift his arm. There is talk he could possibly be done for the year. Obviously this is unfortuante and you don't want players to get hurt, but it does appear Troy will now have a great opportunity without Boller in the picture.
Perhaps. I would argue Troy's best shot was with Boller on the roster as the #2. Boller's 'good enough' to be a career backup, but not good enough to be 'the guy.' That's the situation Troy needed to capitalize on; nobody looking over his shoulder.

With Flacco the only other option, if Boller is indeed done for the year, then the Ravens will probably go dumpster diving after the last cut-down, and you never know what they'll come up with.

I think Troy was going to start anyway, but I thought his only real competition was from Boller simply because he has by far the most experience of the three. I don't think Flacco has been considered of viable option at this point which now leaves them no choice but to start Troy. I see your point though, now they may be forced to go out and get a Culpepper or make a trade for an aging veteran like a Mark Brunnel for example and they might be tempted to start him over Troy. I hope Troy just stays focused and doesn't worry about that stuff and just consentrates on what he has control of which is playing well when he's on the field.
