QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Bottom line is they're not setting him up to suceed what so ever. I hate how the ravens are going vanilla here in the preseason when they need to open things up for all the QB's to actually settle on a QB for the season. Who cares if teams see more of your playbook in the preseason if it means finding your starting QB in the process get a fucking life Harbaugh.

I'm not sure that opening the playbook is any better means of finding your starting QB than keeping a simple playbook. You run plays and the player that performs better with those plays takes the job.

RAVENS RUMOR MILL: Why Troy Smith should be named starter ~ August 19, 2008
Plus more news and rumors from One Winning Drive

Typically the quarterback who starts preseason game number 3 ends up being the opening day starter. The Ravens have determined who will start on Saturday against the Rams but they are keeping the choice shrouded in secrecy. When asked why Head Coach John Harbaugh deadpanned, ?Not ready to announce it yet."

No one asked me but the choice from this corner is rather obvious ? Troy Smith.

Why you ask?

Here?s why?

The Ravens offensive line is in disarray right now and that might be the understatement of the preseason. Until the Ravens secure the tackle positions, speed rushers will have their way with the offensive line. We?ve seen Kyle Boller do the Curly Shuffle many times under pressure. Troy Smith has a knack of avoiding rushers and making plays with his feet. He did exactly that when Jared Allen seemingly had him locked in on Saturday night for a sack. Smith turned that into an 18 yard gain.

Don?t we already know what the Ravens have with Kyle Boller? The team knows that he will shine at times and then throw some head scratcher of a pass that almost always turns into an untimely turnover. Oh and let?s not forget that Boller hasn?t won a road game since President Bush was re-elected.

Boller is almost certainly gone after 2008. Wouldn?t a more experienced Troy Smith benefit the team moving forward? Why waste the snaps on Boller during a season when there?s little hope for a post season berth?
Home field advantage is important in the NFL, particularly the Ravens. Starting Kyle Boller will quickly deflate the M&T balloon because as sure as we?re all sitting here, Boller will be booed after his first interception essentially neutralizing the 12th man. The mob will be more willing to give Smith a little latitude.

Except the opposing team knows exactly what is being called and cheats on EVERYTHING.

I've never seen a QB pull the move Troy did against Minnesota on Saturday night. Literally, at the snap, the CB ran to the spot he knew where the ball was going on a quick slant. Troy pump faked on the quick slant, and had just enough time to hit his receiver once the CB was out of position. I think 95% of 2nd year quarterbacks and Kyle Boller watch that pass being taken to the house.

OC's shouldn't put there players in that position, but that is what happens when the same 3 plays are used over and over again, just run to different sides of the field. It's a bad way to develop a QB.

Your observation of Troy is exactly why a could might choose to do so. So they can see what the players do in such situations. That should be obvious to you by now. Beyond this, they ran a tad more than 3 plays...but that's not the point.

Here at OSU, we loved Smith so much because of what he could do with a play. The way he would dance out of the pocket, and then smartly decide whether to tuck it and get the first, or play decoy, have the defenders chase him and throw (a completed catch) on the run. I wouldn't have expected Zwick to do this much, because it wasn't his style of play. Smith brings alot more to the table, more than what standard plays given to him shows. Its his valuable assets of psyching out the defense and movements away from the pocket that make him special. The minute he is retained to stay under center and perform the exact same Boller or Flacco does, he isn't Heisman winning, clutch performance Troy Smith anymore.

I say give em all a playboy and let them lead and play THEIR way. Which ever works out best for the team is your starter.

Troy Smith to Start Saturday's Game - Baltimore News, Weather, Channel 2 - WMAR-TV

Troy Smith to Start Saturday's Game

Troy Smith will start at quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens in their third preseason game.

Coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday that Smith will get an extended look from the coaching staff when the Ravens take on the St. Louis Rams on Saturday night. Harbaugh says the second-year player from Ohio State may take all the snaps with the first-team offense.

Smith is battling with Kyle Boller for the Ravens' starting job. Neither quarterback has distinguished himself in two preseason games so far.

The Ravens open their season at home against Cincinnati on Sept. 7. Harbaugh has said he might wait until the week before the game to announce his starter

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Troy Smith will be the Ravens' starting quarterback for Saturday's preseason game against the St. Louis Rams, coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday.

The former Heisman Trophy winner may play as much as three quarters as the Ravens want to evaluate him as they try to determine who will be the quarterback in the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7.

Good news for Troy, hopefully he can do something great

I LOVED the way he would step up, way up, into the pocket on purpose and then pop back out to throw. He absolutely killed scUM with that. I don't think I've ever seen another qb with that particular move.

Best of luck, Troy. You deserve an honest shot at it.

I'm hoping that one of the reasons for the extended look at Troy this weekend is to up his value as trade bait... If it's not going to happen for him in Baltimore, and he could be more appreciated somewhere else, great. This is at least a couple quarters of "look, here's what Troy Smith can do for you".

I think Baltimore is giving him a fair shot, but I don't think it's because they like him, it's because they want to use him or get rid of him. I would personally love to see him in Pittsburgh. Batch is hurt, Roethlisberger is one out-of-control wheelie away from the IR. It's close to home, too, for Troy. It could be awesome to see him throwing to Santonio (or San Antonio as Corso would say) again.

It kills me to see quarterbacks he outplayed in college (Henne, Drew Stanton, Quinn, etc.) getting NFL love because they're tall.

If it's ever going to happen, it has to be this year or next, or it's hello Arena Football. And I'd hate to see that happen. Maybe Pittsburgh would make him the new Kordell/Randle El phenomenon.

It could happen...

I'd like to see him play anywhere there is a good O-line. Guess that rules out Chicago, eh?

If Baltimore is serious about winning, they are going to have to depend on their defense and a QB who limits turnovers. Kyle Boller is incapable of that. I think Boller probabaly has made more good throws than Troy this pre-season, but his bad throws outweigh them.

Troy has one pick, and it wasn't b/c of a stupid decesion. He gives them a better chance at winning.

I still remember the USC game (I think it was that game). Where Quinn broke for a 40 yard run and got caught behind. The announcer immediately said, "The difference between Brady and Smith. is with Smith that would of been a touchdown."

Quinn hasn't proved anything compared to Troy. Troy faced a pretty stout defense in Pittsburgh last season as a rookie, and performed fairly well. He walked away with a win. These preseason games can only show so much.
Until I see Quinn during the regular season I will hold my opinions.... even though i dislike him ...... alot.

With Baltimore giving Smith the start this weekend it shows that they have lost complete confidence in Bollers play. Flacco will get a start in mid season, regardless of how Troy is doing. The Ravens organization is too stubborn not to give him a chance.
