QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Questions remain as Ravens' training camp nears end
Aug 14, 2008

WESTMINSTER, Md. (Map, News) - As the Baltimore Ravens prepare to break training camp Friday, first-year coach John Harbaugh expressed confidence that a grueling regimen has steeled the team for the regular season.

"Oh, yes, we're a better football team," Harbaugh said. "How much better is yet to be determined, but we're getting better out there."

With camp closing, though, there are still several pressing questions surrounding the Ravens following a 5-11 season last year.

Who's going to be the starting quarterback as Kyle Boller and Troy Smith compete for the job?

Smith to start Saturday night against the Vikings Smith is about to get his first start Saturday night against the Minnesota Vikings after Boller committed two turnovers in a 16-15 win over the New England Patriots.

Harbaugh said that Smith possibly could play the entire first half.

"Like it was before, we've got an idea and a target for reps but it's more of a feel thing," Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh declined to get into specifics about how he would allot playing time to Boller and rookie first-round pick Joe Flacco.

"That's going to play out during the game," Harbaugh said. "We're not willing to say right now."

Who says athletes don't care?
Several players went above and beyond after the conclusion of this morning's practice. Many of them spent several minutes signing autographs for fans perched along the sides of the practice field at McDaniel College in Westminster.

Fullback Le'Ron McClain made one young fan happy by giving the boy his skullcap. Linebacker Jarret Johnson retrieved cleats and gloves from the locker room and distributed them to young fans, nearly causing a mob scene in the process.

However, quarterback Troy Smith may have topped everyone. First, he granted one fan's request by giving him his Ravens cap. Then Smith asked wide receiver Darnerien McCants to grab three sets of cleats from his locker.

When McCants returned with the shoes, Smith took the cleats to several teammates, asking them to sign the shoes. Then Smith passed out all six cleats to young fans clamoring for them. It was a great gesture on the part of an athlete who is a hero to many.

Kyle Boller got his chance last week, so this week Troy Smith will get his turn to stake a claim on the Baltimore Ravens' starting quarterback job.

Smith will get the start against the Minnesota Vikings at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore in the Ravens' second preseason game on Saturday.
Starting is nothing new for Smith. He got a chance to start two regular season games last year, so this preseason chance should be familiar.
A little more is riding on Saturday's contest.
"I try to take everything the same," Smith said. "I try to treat every situation with the same kind of morale. You just don't want to put too much into one and say one is more important than the next. You never know, even though it's preseason. sometimes it could be your last play." In the preseason opener against the New England Patriots, when Smith played a good portion of the second half, he was 5-for-12 for 72 yards. He didn't throw a touchdown or an interception.

Ravens QB Smith gets big chance against Vikings

TroySmith.jpg

Ravens second-year quarterback Troy Smith may have to deliver a knockout performance tomorrow night if he wants to win the the starting job, at least to start the regular season.

Reports from Sun reporters in Westminster put Kyle Boller ahead in the three-way quarterback competition but that's not to say Boller's performance has towered above that of Smith or rookie Joe Flacco. If it were a prize fight, you could say Boller is ahead on points and that's why I say Smith would need a "knockout" performance when he gets the start tomorrow night against the Minnesota Vikings at M&T Bank Stadium.

It could still happen that Smith wins this starting job because head coach John Harbaugh is going to weight the games more than the practices, or at least that is what he has said. And there is always the possibility that Boller could play himself out of a job but I don't think so -- he's developing into too smart a QB to do that. What could happen is that Boller starts the season but is eventually replaced. In all cases, though, the quarterbacks are being held hostage to a situation where injuries have sidelined half of the offensive starting lineup, including the two tackles.

Ravens' QB trying to position himself to be named regular-season starter

OWINGS MILLS -- Troy Smith could take command of the Baltimore Ravens' quarterback competition with an authoritative performance tonight, or he could inject even more confusion into a muddled situation if he falters against the Minnesota Vikings.

Although this is just a preseason contest at M&T Bank Stadium, it qualifies as a pivotal moment in the former Heisman Trophy winner's career.

Because neither Smith or former starter Kyle Boller really separated themselves during training camp, even though Boller was far more consistent overall, or against the New England Patriots, this is an especially important night for Smith even if he won?t acknowledge the significance.

"I try to take everything as the same," Smith said. "I try to treat every situation w ith the same kind of morale, just put your all into every situation. You don't want to put too much into one and say that one is more important than the next, because you never know. Even though it's preseason, sometimes it could be your last play.?

The keys for Smith are improving his accuracy, avoiding turnovers and displaying his strong leadership qualities in the huddle. After a rocky week of practice, he needs to maintain his composure against a defense that features star defensive linemen Jared Allen and Kevin Williams.

Smith has shown more big-play capability than Boller in practice, but has thrown many more interceptions.

"We want to see Troy play quarterback well and do the things that winning quarterbacks do," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "Move the team, make good decisions, operate the offense and avoid the costly mistake."

Did not see the game live but am watching in now on NFLN. My take:

On the second play of the game for the Ravens Troy made a brilliant (okay, brilliant may be a little excessive) audible that led to a long run. Later he tucked the ball on a bootleg which seemed unusual considering his tendency to extend plays and keep his eyes downfield in college. He got tackled by Winfield on that play and it looked like Winfield gave Troy a few words after the play.

Ray Rice has done a lot of the heavy-lifting for Troy. Troy chose to run on another bootleg, though the throw would have been difficult (bootleg left). On a third and long he then threw a relatively good pass (in that no one but his receiver had a chance at it) splitting the corner and safety coverage, although he had to throw it high and his receiver (Figurs; Troy always seems to just overthrow him) got separated from the ball by a hard hit from the incoming safety. I guess you would say it was a smart throw that gave the receiver a chance, but at the same time you couldn't blame the receiver for not being able to haul it in.

Third drive. Smith has a good scramble up the middle. Two or three plays later Smith eludes two almost sure-fire sacks, another tackle that would have stopped him for no gain, and then scrambled for well over 10 yards. A play or two later Smith gets taken down for a sack at the end of his drop that sets up 3rd and 21. Smith then completes a quick slant to Figurs for 10 yards or so and the Ravens punt.

Fourth drive. 1:35 left in the first half. Smith throws behind his receiver, receiver (Clayton?) tries to catch it, tips it, intercepted. Part Troy's fault, maybe partly the receiver's fault, part bad luck.

The game was probably just a wash in the Ratbird's QB derby. Troy did okay, Boller is still Boller, tossed a pick and fumbled and Flacco still looks really green. They're gonna be really bad this year. Their D is getting old and got diced tonight.

Watched the whole game up here in Viking land, and I'll throw my hat in the ring here.

The biggest thing I noticed is the pass protection (namely the left side) is awful. Atleast 3-5 times he had someone on him about when he got to his drop. On one play Jared Allen got to him just as he got back to his drop point, went for the tackle but troy was able to duck him and juke for about a 20yard run. The Athelticism is still there as far as troy running around and making plays.

His INT was a bullet and was probably Troys fault, but like its been said the ball also could've been caught (although a very tough ball to catch).
What really [censored]ed me off about the game though was the fact how vanilla there offense is. Now, I know its preseason but they were in a two tight end formation most of the night while troy was in. The play selection was awful as well with it usually going run, run, pass. Troy I thought was set up to fail tonight. If you have 3 quarterbacks who need time to prove who's the man then dammit have them throw the ball around and figure this situation out. Troy played a whole half and I dunno how many time she dropped to pass? Maybe 10? Then when he did drop back to pass he was sacked once for a big loss, and ran for his life on others. IMO, they need some major help on the Oline or Troy just needs to get out of Baltimore. Very poor situation for Troy to be in and if they're going to name him the starter then open up the fuckin offense and let him progress in live game conditions.
