Questions remain as Ravens' training camp nears end
Aug 14, 2008

WESTMINSTER, Md. (Map, News) - As the Baltimore Ravens prepare to break training camp Friday, first-year coach John Harbaugh expressed confidence that a grueling regimen has steeled the team for the regular season.
"Oh, yes, we're a better football team," Harbaugh said. "How much better is yet to be determined, but we're getting better out there."
With camp closing, though, there are still several pressing questions surrounding the Ravens following a 5-11 season last year.
Who's going to be the starting quarterback as Kyle Boller and Troy Smith compete for the job?
Smith to start Saturday night against the Vikings Smith is about to get his first start Saturday night against the Minnesota Vikings after Boller committed two turnovers in a 16-15 win over the New England Patriots.
Harbaugh said that Smith possibly could play the entire first half.
"Like it was before, we've got an idea and a target for reps but it's more of a feel thing," Harbaugh said.
Harbaugh declined to get into specifics about how he would allot playing time to Boller and rookie first-round pick Joe Flacco.
"That's going to play out during the game," Harbaugh said. "We're not willing to say right now."
Who says athletes don't care?
Several players went above and beyond after the conclusion of this morning's practice. Many of them spent several minutes signing autographs for fans perched along the sides of the practice field at McDaniel College in Westminster.
Fullback Le'Ron McClain made one young fan happy by giving the boy his skullcap. Linebacker Jarret Johnson retrieved cleats and gloves from the locker room and distributed them to young fans, nearly causing a mob scene in the process.
However, quarterback Troy Smith may have topped everyone. First, he granted one fan's request by giving him his Ravens cap. Then Smith asked wide receiver Darnerien McCants to grab three sets of cleats from his locker.
When McCants returned with the shoes, Smith took the cleats to several teammates, asking them to sign the shoes. Then Smith passed out all six cleats to young fans clamoring for them. It was a great gesture on the part of an athlete who is a hero to many.

Kyle Boller got his chance last week, so this week Troy Smith will get his turn to stake a claim on the Baltimore Ravens' starting quarterback job.
Smith will get the start against the Minnesota Vikings at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore in the Ravens' second preseason game on Saturday.
Starting is nothing new for Smith. He got a chance to start two regular season games last year, so this preseason chance should be familiar.
A little more is riding on Saturday's contest.
"I try to take everything the same," Smith said. "I try to treat every situation with the same kind of morale. You just don't want to put too much into one and say one is more important than the next. You never know, even though it's preseason. sometimes it could be your last play." In the preseason opener against the New England Patriots, when Smith played a good portion of the second half, he was 5-for-12 for 72 yards. He didn't throw a touchdown or an interception.

Ravens QB Smith gets big chance against Vikings
Ravens second-year quarterback Troy Smith may have to deliver a knockout performance tomorrow night if he wants to win the the starting job, at least to start the regular season.
Reports from Sun reporters in Westminster put Kyle Boller ahead in the three-way quarterback competition but that's not to say Boller's performance has towered above that of Smith or rookie Joe Flacco. If it were a prize fight, you could say Boller is ahead on points and that's why I say Smith would need a "knockout" performance when he gets the start tomorrow night against the Minnesota Vikings at M&T Bank Stadium.
It could still happen that Smith wins this starting job because head coach John Harbaugh is going to weight the games more than the practices, or at least that is what he has said. And there is always the possibility that Boller could play himself out of a job but I don't think so -- he's developing into too smart a QB to do that. What could happen is that Boller starts the season but is eventually replaced. In all cases, though, the quarterbacks are being held hostage to a situation where injuries have sidelined half of the offensive starting lineup, including the two tackles.

Ravens' QB trying to position himself to be named regular-season starter

OWINGS MILLS -- Troy Smith could take command of the Baltimore Ravens' quarterback competition with an authoritative performance tonight, or he could inject even more confusion into a muddled situation if he falters against the Minnesota Vikings.
Although this is just a preseason contest at M&T Bank Stadium, it qualifies as a pivotal moment in the former Heisman Trophy winner's career.
Because neither Smith or former starter Kyle Boller really separated themselves during training camp, even though Boller was far more consistent overall, or against the New England Patriots, this is an especially important night for Smith even if he won?t acknowledge the significance.
"I try to take everything as the same," Smith said. "I try to treat every situation w ith the same kind of morale, just put your all into every situation. You don't want to put too much into one and say that one is more important than the next, because you never know. Even though it's preseason, sometimes it could be your last play.?
The keys for Smith are improving his accuracy, avoiding turnovers and displaying his strong leadership qualities in the huddle. After a rocky week of practice, he needs to maintain his composure against a defense that features star defensive linemen Jared Allen and Kevin Williams.
Smith has shown more big-play capability than Boller in practice, but has thrown many more interceptions.
"We want to see Troy play quarterback well and do the things that winning quarterbacks do," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "Move the team, make good decisions, operate the offense and avoid the costly mistake."
And there is always the possibility that Boller could play himself out of a job but I don't think so -- he's developing into too smart a QB to do that.
