QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

The passes that Troy hit on were ridiculous. He showed poise, agility, and the canon we all know he has. How so many people keep doubting his height and his arm strength ... I'll never know.

Boller had the statistically superior line, but he also hit a lot of check downs that didn't go anywhere and made some boneheaded decisions, all while having the benefit of working with the 1s. Troy and Flacco were stuck with the scraps, and 'the scraps' in Baltimore are pretty lean when speaking of WRs and OL.

You can't make anything of Flacco's 0-fer. The dregs he got stuck with protecting him in the 4th quarter gave him all of a half second to throw.

Hope Troy maximizes his opportunity next weekend when he gets the start.

Troy will be starting the next game vs. the Vikings and it will be on NFL Network. I'm watching the first game as I type this and Troy is going to have a great year. If they dont start him the franchise needs to file bankruptcy and dissolve itself out of the league!

Men of Troy
One of the undercurrents felt from the Ravens' visit to Gillette Stadium was the support in the team's locker room for Troy Smith to be the team's starting quarterback on opening day. Linebacker Ray Lewis, in particular, is privately lobbying for Smith - the former Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State - to take the reins over Kyle Boller and 2008 first-round draft choice Joe Flacco

QUARTERBACK DERBY
The defense overwhelmed the quarterbacks and offensive line yesterday morning seemingly at the whim of defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. Troy Smith was sacked four times, rookie Joe Flacco twice and Kyle Boller once - and those are conservative numbers. When the quarterbacks did have time to throw, they either overthrew their receivers or had the passes knocked down by the secondary. The best throw came from Boller, who rolled out right and lofted a pass that rookie wide receiver Marcus Smith hauled in.

Smith needs to regroup

Watching Ravens quarterback Troy Smith perform the last two days has been difficult. He looks bad. The entire offense has looked lethargic as well, but you hope that the quarterback can make a play or two to get things going. Nothing. Granted, the offensive line has performed poorly, and the running backs won't pick up blitzes. But even when Smith has time to throw, he has been inaccurate. Maybe it's just a dry spell Smith is going through, or maybe he has lost confidence in his offensive line. But if he plays this poorly Saturday night against the Vikings, then it will be no contest as to which quarterback will start the regular-season opener. One day it would be fun to go to practice and watch an offense that can light up a defense.

Word around Ravens camp is that Troy Smith is extremely confident and expects to be the team?s starter. He?s had some mild run-ins with Coach Harbaugh over locker room music and the number of practice reps he?s received. Might he be a prima donna in the making? Hey AD, how about one of those humble pie t-shirts for Troy.

According to the Boston Globe, ?One of the undercurrents felt from the Ravens? visit to Gillette Stadium was the support in the team's locker room for Troy Smith to be the team's starting quarterback on opening day. Linebacker Ray Lewis, in particular, is privately lobbying for Smith - the former Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State - to take the reins over Kyle Boller and 2008 first-round draft choice Joe Flacco.?

Maybe Ray should just shut up and play. He needs to be a leader on the field, not in the coach?s corner or in the front office. Haven?t we all been down this road before with not so good results?

Other observations:

* Kyle Boller got off to a good start, connecting on eight of his first nine passes during full-team drills. But he gave it all back during a one-minute drill when safety Jim Leonhard stepped in front of a Boller pass intended for wide receiver Matt Willis on a slant pattern and took off down the left sidelines.

Troy Smith was worse. He threw a low pass to wide receiver Derrick Mason behind the line of scrimmage, and when Mason couldn't corral the throw, cornerback Corey Ivy pounced on the loose ball. During the one-minute drill, Smith fired a deep post pass to rookie wide receiver Marcus Smith, but free safety Ed Reed made the interception and returned it 40 yards into the end zone. Smith did make amends later by connecting with rookie wide receiver Justin Harper for a touchdown.

Rookie Joe Flacco fared better. Under Flacco, the offense marched down the field during the one-minute drill and scored when he found Mason at the 5-yard line and Mason scampered into the end zone.

Re: Maybe Ray should just shut up and play. He needs to be a leader on the field, not in the coach?s corner or in the front office. Haven?t we all been down this road before with not so good results?

Not so good results, they made the playoffs in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2006. They won the Super Bowl in 2000. I'd say that is isn't great, but it isn't oo bad either.

I read this book (below) a couple weeks ago while on vacation, it cronicles the Raven's 2004 season in detail. Let there be no mistake about it: Ray Lewis is the Raven's leader on the field, off the field, on the sidelines, in the locker room, during the off season, and even during the team's Wednesday night prayer meetings, etc. And the team owner, coaches, and players like it that way. The only exception to that was: they would have liked Boller to be more of a leader on the offensive side of the ball.

So the Boston Globe article told Ray Lewis to shut up because he supports Troy, and they said that right after saying that there is locker room support for Troy?

That writer needs to stick to reporting. His opinions aren't more important than the face of the Ravens' franchise for quite some time. Just my opinion, of course..

Word of the day: 'Gamer'

Ravens quarterback Troy Smith had his best day of the week. He opened the team practice with three straight long bombs that were perfectly placed, but two were dropped by wide receiver Mark Clatyon. Hopefully, Smith has rebounded and will play well against the Minnesota Vikings. One team official said today that Smith was a "gamer." I've heard a lot about these "gamer" players all week. "Gamer" seems to be a buzzword for lazy players who don't want to practice hard.

Willis McGahee is a "gamer". Le'Ron McClain is a "gamer," and now Smith is a "gamer." Enough. How about finding some players who want to work and prepare hard to play in a game? I'm sure that at $2 or $3 million a year John Harbaugh can find some practice players who play hard in games.
