QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Flacco 0-3 with a lost fumble thus far.

The good news is, as a Browns fan, we know Baltimore is going to go at least another 5 years without a QB as they stay committed to Flacco.

I'll root for the Birds as long as Trpy is the QB, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I swear, GM's lose all sensibility in regards to QB's just because of size and arm stength.

What do Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, and Jemarcus Russell all have in common? Big guys who were drafted high but are going to be average/below average QB's in the NFL. I still can't figure out why everyone just overlooked Matt Ryans 22-47 performance against MSU in the bowl game, or his awful 3 quarters against Va Tech before having one good series.

Troy got some props from Shaun Hill on NFL Live.

Shaun King my man.....but ya, that was nice. He really thread the needle on a few completions..not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

11-15 for Boller is really solid, but the turnovers are a killer.

In a weird way, I almost think Baltimore is fine with Boller sucking the joint up and then letting Flacco take over. Troy Smith could complicate things with good play...they know what they get with Kyle.

i really hope Troy gets a shot, at least enough of one where a team would like Troy to come in and compete there at some point. 5-12 doesn't look very good, but no turnovers tonight, and I odn;t think he;s had a pick in practice since the first day.

Not only tremendous props, but a long segment breaking down some great plays by Troy. A laser over the middle splitting 3 defenders in time, and a filthy sideline pass (across the field, at the sideline, with two defenders right on his WR... yet no chance for a pick). He even mixed in some zone read action in that set of clips.

I've found that the Raven boards are good for Troy info. From a post there on tonight's game:

The High Points And The Looow Points, 1st pre-season game in review

highs:
-Boller's 1st series
-Troy Smith's ridiculous throw over the middle
-Troy Smith's even more ridiculous perfect pass in the corner.
-Troy Smith

-Yamon Fgurs returns
-Brendon Ayanbadejo was making plays left and right. great 2 point convo break up.
-Fabian washingtons 2 picks
-Cam Camerons play calling
-No game delays. Amazing.
-Justin Bannan's penetration.
-Tom Zbikowski's first hit of the game on kickoff
-Defense looks like they are back to 06 form and actually looks like they will go up and beyond this year

Lows:
-Bollers Interception
-Bollers Fumble
-Troy Smith's careless passes
-Flacco's entire time in the game (jesus almighty watch over this guy, amen)
-Flacco's o-line if you even want to call it an o-line. Looked more like no-line
-Right side of the offensive line
-The entire 4th quarter.
-The Refs
Troy Smith did have some careless throws that were off the mark, but when he connected..boy did he look amazing out there. He moved the offense down field. We actually looked like an offense. If you had to make your choice off of this game Smith would be your starter.
Hard to tell he had a good game from watching via gametracker and seeing his stats, but these are good comments from a Ravens fan who could see the game. I'd love to see the two referenced passes.

NFL Video Galleries

Troy takes over at 2:50 (you need to see the reverse angle to appreciate the window he threw that into... he had to lead his WR and split 3 players to make that... a second or two earlier and that's an easy pick).

The truly sick play, the sideline touch pass, wasn't on there :( Try and catch NFL live.

I just watched this and there's no Troy highlights what-so-ever :(

Hmm, I guess you can't link the 4:58 video. Click below on Teams - Baltimore Ravens, then click on the 04:58 highlights. On THAT one, at 2:50, you see a nice pass by Troy like I described.

Smith to start second preseason game
After Boller's turn in opener, ex-Heisman Trophy winner gets nod vs. Vikings
By Jamison Hensley | Sun reporter
August 8, 2008

Troy Smith will receive his chance to stake a claim to the Ravens' starting quarterback job.

The former Heisman Trophy winner will start the next preseason game, coach John Harbaugh confirmed after last night's 16-15 win over the New England Patriots. Smith will likely work the first half of the Aug. 16 game against the Minnesota Vikings at M&T Bank Stadium.

"We're looking at it as two games with balanced repetitions," Harbaugh said.

Kyle Boller started the preseason opener, completing 11 of 15 passes for 102 yards while playing nearly the entire first half. His performance marred by a fumble and an interception.

Smith, who entered near the end of the second quarter and played through the first series of the fourth, was 5 of 12 for 74 yards. His best throws came deep across the middle, a 30-yard pass to Darnerien McCants and an 18-yarder to Justin Harper.

The quarterback ratings for Boller (63.8) and Smith (62.5) were nearly identical.

"I thought Troy was poised," Harbaugh said. "He threw some NFL balls in there. He did a nice job."

Smith made two starts last season as a rookie after Boller and Steve McNair went down with injuries.

He completed 52.6 percent of his passes last season, throwing two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Smith said next week's start is "vital."

"It's very, very important for myself and my development for the team," he said.

Obviously I'm biased, but Troy was definitely the best of the three. I would say that in terms of efficiency Boller and Troy were about similar, as Troy should have had an interception, there was just too much zip on in for the defender :tongue2:. That said, the difference in how they looked was noticeable. Boller's completions were good, but the two throws Troy had that everyone is harping on about were flat out ridiculous. Furthermore, Troy was very poised and was able to scramble out of pressure. Boller, not so much. Flacco could have impressed against scrubs and instead was awful. If the coaching staff had gone for a couple of 4th and 1s at midfield, as Troy's body language seemed to indicate he was hoping for (I mean come on, it's pre-season), then he might have been even more impressive.

Good news is he gets the next start.
