QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I wouldn't be to worried about Baltimore drafting a QB in the 1st round...I think the NFL is really starting to see the advantage that comes with grooming your QB rather than throwing him to the lions. If Baltimore did draft a QB he wouldn't start immediately and Troy would have sufficient time to show his quals-all he needs is that chance.

I disagree. If they went QB in the first or second round they will move to release or trade Smith. I dont think they will go QB early unless they have already decided Troy isnt their future. I do think they wont go QB in the first two rounds though. They have bigger needs.

It's just unreal that they haven't made you the coach of the ravens yet. lmao

theres little chance he could do much worse.

Here's the thing: the point was made earlier that the Ravens O-line is miserable. Swinging gates.

I think that Billick is preserving his treasure at quarterback until he can upgrade his O-line (or learn some protection schemes) during the offseason.

Why throw Troy to the wolves now? Let him spell Boller. Troy doesn't need to be the starter NOW. He will get his chance - why rush it? Wait for a more opportune time.

"treasure" generally isn't how you describe unproven 5th round draft picks. you coddle first and 2nd rounders. guys your 100% sold on and have stupid amounts of money wrapped up in. 5th round guys you throw into the fire and if they burn... *shrug* no big. thats why you didn't take a chance on them in the 4th.

the ravens have absolutely nothing to loose in starting troy the rest of the season. the oline are swingin gatesyou say? so? most of troy's best plays came against a heavy rush. "the catch" anyone? go back and watch any scum game. besides, if he is so fragile that two games worth of failure would "ruin" him... best to know that now.

it really is in baltimores best interest to play him now rather than wait. if they play him now and he fails then you can go ahead and keep qb on the wish list for the next draft. which of course would likely loose them nothing as im very certain its already on the wish list. if he goes out and plays well... you might just be able to take that off the list and pick up another olineman instead. gee... that could be helpful.

if billick had anything resembling brains he would use what little time is left to find out what his known commodities are and where his weaknesses lie in order to address them in the off season. i don't see him doing this though. i see him deep in the wilderness of wag in this coming off season.

I'd have to disagree and Baltimore is the perfect team to point out the importance of the position in NFL ball. That's an excellent defense and they can't win because the QB position is so awful. With more and more concern about concussions, and with more and more QBs getting their heads ripped off on blitzses it's not hard to imagine teams stocking up with 4 or 5, three on the roster and a couple on the taxi squad.

Other examples would be to look at the Steelers last year while Rothlesberger recovered or the Bengals... aww just forget the Bengals they're awful with or without a QB.

Oops, I should correct myself-What I meant was that I wouldn't be worried about Baltimore drafting a QB (as far as Troy's opportunities go). I'd say odds are they will, but Troy won't lose an opportunity because of it.

kartaron: Why would they trade/release Troy? 1) Who knows when the QB might sign (see Jamarcus Russel). 2) You need two solid QBs and Boller isn't even good enough to be a backup. 3) Troy will have had 1 year in the system and who knows if the QB will end up good enough to play right away. 4) Troy is cheap-he was a 5th rounder with a lot of potential.

No way he leaves Baltimore before next season is complete.

First of all Baltimore's O-line is awful. Watching the game on saturday was painful. So dont say the only bad spot on that team is their QB. Also, they are plagued by injuries.

Smith can scramble and can easily create plays with his feet. He has great agility and throws well on the run. This is why we have seen him move the ball down the field.

The above poster is correct. Boller needing growth after 5 years in a system, which he should know inside and out, is sickening. Give Troy a shot, and if they do draft a qb next draft then drafting Troy was just a waste of time. If anything put Boller in the hot seat and let Troy compete, because that's what he does best... He play's to win. Which brings me to my next point, his leadership ability. I remember reading a comment by a Ravens player, "When he comes in it's like a breath of fresh air." It's obvious the teammates want him there, so let him play.

However, next season Billick starts McNair.... Guaruntee it.

Boller isnt good enough, Troy isnt ready to start (their mind) and the rookie wouldnt start. I expect they will go for a senior QB. Now, if they go for a rookie as well...I doubt they keep 4 QBs so someone is out, and Billick has an affinity for Boller.

If Im wrong about them wanting a senior QB to hold things together that changes things. But Im not sure that the year after he has everyone in Baltimore calling for his job he is going to be willing to put the reigns in the hands of a guy with 20 NFL pass attempts (so far).

Doesn't mean they release Troy. McNair is a good candidate to be released (his arm strenght was not good and then he injured his shoulder-bad combo). Billick does see Troy's upside and he Troy is very cheap. If Baltimore does pick a QB in the 1st round-I'd expect to see Boller and Smith (if he gets a little more PT this year) to compete for the starting job while the rookie learns.

Ravens QB T. Smith could make first NFL start on Sunday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Rookie quarterback Troy Smith provided a much-needed spark for the Baltimore offense when Kyle Boller went down last week, nearly rallying the slumping Ravens to a victory over Miami.
With Boller still feeling the effects of a concussion that could keep him out this weekend against Seattle, the Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State suddenly finds himself preparing to make his first NFL start.

"Confidence with me has never really been a problem because I don't have anything to prove," said Smith, who took all the snaps with the first-team offense Wednesday. "I don't have anything to prove to anybody, just the guys in this locker room and me getting better."

Boller was sent home following team meetings because he's still experiencing headaches and sensitivity to light after a violent hit delivered by Miami defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday during the 22-16 overtime loss.

Smith, a fifth-round draft pick, engineered a game-tying, 59-yard drive in the final seconds of regulation and helped position the Ravens (4-10) for a potential game-winning field goal in overtime. But kicker Matt Stover missed the 44-yard attempt, and the Dolphins scored on the ensuing possession.

"If it's still bothering (Boller) Thursday, I would probably go ahead and start Troy," Ravens coach Brian Billick said. "But we'll see how he feels Thursday."

Boller's health makes it Smith's turn for Ravens

Brian Billick's declaration on Monday, about who will start at quarterback for the Ravens on Sunday, never sounded right. Just a touch too certain, not quite enough qualifiers. But that's not really his fault. No one should have considered it to be set in stone had he or she watched the game in Miami last Sunday.

I truthfully don't worry who Troy plays against. His confidence and ability to keep the play alive always give him a great chance to make big plays down the field. He will be goign against 2 tough D's if he starts in the last 2 games against Seattle and Pittsburgh. The only 2 things I don't hope happen while he's in there are bad weather and Billick being conservative with him and relying completely on McGahee. The only way to totally utilize Troy is to unleash him.
