OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Rookie quarterback Troy Smith will make his first start Sunday when the Baltimore Ravens visit the Seattle Seahawks.
With Kyle Boller missing his second consecutive day of practice because of lingering effects from a concussion, including headaches and sensitivity to light, Ravens coach Brian Billick confirmed Thursday Smith will take his place.
"With Kyle, it would be problematic for him on Sunday, so, hopefully, he will be available to back up," Billick said. "Missing two days of practice would make it tough. We're certainly not going to put him at risk."
Billick acknowledged that Smith, last year's Heisman Trophy winner at Ohio State, may also start the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers because of Boller's injury.
"Concussions are very unpredictable," Billick said.
Smith will be the third quarterback to start for the Ravens this season. Steve McNair started six of the first nine games, but struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness and was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 3.
Smith rushed for a touchdown in his NFL debut against Indianapolis on Dec. 9, and directed a game-tying drive in regulation in a 22-16 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
"He's a very strong personality," Billick said. "If things get ugly with him, he'll be all right through whatever happens. He's a very strong-willed young man."
If Boller is unavailable to be the backup, then the Ravens would likely promote undrafted rookie Cullen Finnerty from the practice squad. Wide receiver Mark Clayton is a potential emergency option.

Can we get a vbet against either of these happening??thedecline19;1034934; said:If Troy comes in and plays well these last two games he will either get himself a job next year or get Billick canned by the end of next year if he doesn't play him. We've had enough of Boller's ass.

With Kyle Boller missing a second straight day with a concussion, quarterback Troy Smith will make his first NFL start Sunday, becoming the latest young player to be forced into the lineup.
The sixth rookie to start for the Ravens this season, Smith will take over the offense after quarterbacking four series in the NFL.
"He's as ready as you're going to be as a rookie," coach Brian Billick said. "One thing I don't worry about is that he has a strong personality. You worry what happens if things get ugly with him and pressures ... but he will fight through whatever happens. He's a very strong-willed young man."

KIRKLAND -- Well, at least this time he's got some impressive hardware.
For the second week in a row, the Seattle Seahawks will face a rookie quarterback making his first NFL start. The Baltimore Ravens' Troy Smith, who won the 2006 Heisman Trophy, will start on Sunday, coach Brian Billick announced Thursday.
It marks the fourth week in a row that the Seahawks will face a team starting its backup quarterback.
Seahawks weary of sending blitzes at elusive Smith in Ravens' QB's first start

SEATTLE — First, Matt Moore, because Carolina had already gone through its first three quarterbacks. Now, Troy Smith, with Baltimore's top two passers hurt.
Two rookies. Seven strings of quarterbacks in two games opposing Seattle.
And the Seahawks are trying to avoid being played like a fiddle again.
Undrafted fourth-stringer Moore made his first start last weekend and led the Panthers to a 13-10 upset of Seattle. The snoozing Seahawks (9-5) were flat in their first game since clinching their fourth consecutive NFC West title; Seattle scored its only touchdown with 1 second left.
Sunday, the Ravens (4-10) bring their franchise-record eight-game losing streak to the Northwest. They will also bring Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner at Ohio State. The fifth-round draft choice will make his first NFL start because Kyle Boller has a concussion and Steve McNair is on injured reserve.
"He's not going to be intimidated by this," Baltimore coach Brian Billick said of Smith's first start since he was with the Buckeyes in last January's national championship game won by Florida. "He's been in a lot of big games, so I don't worry about that part of it."
Smith impressed his teammates and the Seahawks by calmly rallying the Ravens in the final two minutes to the tying field goal that forced overtime last week in Miami.
"What Troy does is go out there and make plays. ... That's why he was considered the best football player in college football. That's why he won the Heisman - and it's no different here," veteran Ravens receiver Derrick Mason said. "The guy's just a football player. And that's what I love about him."
