QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

T. Smith takes snaps, may start Sunday
Rookie QB practices with starting offense after Boller misses workout with lingering effects from concussion

Two days after he remained committed to Kyle Boller as his starting quarterback, Ravens coach Brian Billick acknowledged that his plans might have to change.

With Boller feeling lingering effects from a concussion, Troy Smith could make his first NFL start Sunday when the Ravens play at the Seattle Seahawks.

Boller did not practice today and was sent home after meetings because he is still having headaches and sensitivity to light.

Smith, last season's Heisman Trophy winner, took all the snaps with the starting offense for the first time this season.

"If it's still bothering [Boller tomorrow], I would probably go ahead and start Troy," coach Brian Billick said. "But we'll see how he feels [tomorrow]."

OWINGS MILLS -- Those who want Troy Smith to start at quarterback when the Ravens play at Seattle on Sunday might get their wish.
Starting quarterback Kyle Boller did not practice on Wednesday because he's still bothered by the mild concussion he suffered in the Ravens' loss to Miami last week.

"There was a little lingering effect from Sunday (headaches and light sensitivity) and if it's still bothering him tomorrow, then we'll probably go ahead and start Troy," Baltimore coach Brian Billick said after Wednesday's practice.

Billick said it might be too difficult for Boller to start if he has to miss two days of practice.

"We'll see how he feels tomorrow," Billick said. "I'll have to wait and see how Kyle progresses."

Smith could get start for Ravens

OWINGS MILLS -- Baltimore Ravens rookie quarterback Troy Smith is preparing to make his first NFL start due to Kyle Boller suffering lingering effects from a concussion that could force him out of Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State took all of the snaps with the first-team offense Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Boller didn't practice and was sent home following meetings because he's still experiencing headaches and sensitivity to light stemming from a violent hit delivered by defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday during a 22-16 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins.

"If it's still bothering him tomorrow, I would probably go ahead and start Troy," said Ravens coach Brian Billick, who declared Monday that Boller would remain in the lineup if he recovered in time. "But we'll see how he feels."

The Ravens and Smith don't lack for confidence in his ability to lead the offense. Especially after Smith nearly rallied the Ravens (4-10), who are mired in an unprecedented eight-game losing streak, to a victory in relief of Boller in Miami.

"It was like a breath of fresh air," offensive guard Jason Brown said.

Smith's charisma, improvisational skills as he completed most of his passes on the move and ability to escape pressure sparked a dormant offense.

I honestly was expecting something along the lines of this. To be quite honest, I think Boller may be fine, and Billick is probably using Boller's "injury" as an excuse for starting Troy. This does not surprise me though because there is no way in hell that a guy who has lost his last eight starts gives a team the best chance to win.

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - The Troy Smith era might be here. Smith ran the first-team offense during Wednesday?s practice as starter as Kyle Boller recovered from a concussion he sustained against the Dolphins, indicating the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner might start Sunday against the Seattle Seawhawks.
?It went pretty good,? Smith said. ?I?ve been put into a situation to where all the reps are yours and depending on how you do, so for the first time around, it was cool. I?m just trying to be a professional, just trying to stay at it. The new game plan is in, so I have to perfect that now.?
Boller did not practice on Wednesday and was sent home by the team?s medical staff.
?If [the concussion] is still bothering him [today], then we would probably go ahead and start Troy,? Ravens coach Brian Billick said.

Seattle's good but not all that...

How cool for Troy to get his first win on the road? Like Gary Danielson said about him (and some people did not like it) --- Troy is just a baller, like a YMCA baller... he's gonna find someway to beat you....

Have a good game Troy and hopefully get traded to the Lions next year!!!!!

Well, if Baltimores defense can actually stop anyone for a change Troy could have a big impact. He's an accurate thrower, handles pressure well, moves around well and can bring a lot to that offense. The big question is if that horrid defense let's a ton of the points on the board is Billick going to use that to cloud his judgement on how Troy plays? He seems to have this thing for Boller which I can't, for the life of me, understand.
