QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Unbelievable...now Kiper has moved Troy out of the top 5 QBs in the draft. He has Quinn and Russell, then Stanton, Edwards and some dude named Moore. All I can say is, "Wow." I'm no draft expert, but I still don't understand how one game has dropped him so much. Let's hope Troy has a great combine. I still believe that wherever he ends up, he's going to make believers out of people.

Smith grows tired of defending size

OSU quarterback prefers to focus on positives

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

INDIANAPOLIS - For the next two months, the Heisman Trophy-winning moniker attached to his name might be put on hold.
Until the April 28-29 NFL Draft, he might be known as 6-foot quarterback Troy Smith.
It didn't take long for the issue to come up Friday as the Ohio State star met the media at the NFL Scouting Combine. And Smith, a Glenville High School graduate who went 25-3 as a starter for the Buckeyes, didn't seem to welcome the questions.

Smith will have to deal with NFL?s cold reality

TODD JONES

INDIANAPOLIS ? Troy Smith has encased himself in a gilded cage of positive vibes ever since winning the Heisman Trophy in December.
Even a reference to Ohio State?s meltdown against Florida ? you remember, right? that little 41-14 national championship game loss ? can?t drain the moat of good feelings Smith has surrounded himself with.
"It wasn?t bittersweet at all," he said of his senior season. "It was a sweet experience the whole way through. I wouldn?t have it any other way. Just because we didn?t get a chance to finish out on a note that we wanted to, that gives you no reason to say that the season to me was a letdown."

Any news on how Troy fared at the Combine?
He's not going to run until OSU's pro day. The little bit of what I saw was that he threw the fastest ball in his group at just over 58 m.p.h. Also, on a drill for the wr's where they would run a streak then look over their shoulder for the ball, Troy under threw it on the two throws that were shown.

Todd McShay just ripped Troy on ESPNEWS, implying that Troy wasn't in good shape still from the awards banquet circuit and that he really had a chance to showcase his athletic ability but didn't do so.

McShay was all about that QB from Stanford, saying that he could challenge Stanton for the third QB taken. Finally (get this), he was signing the praises of Chris Leak, yet I couldn't find any facts from the combine he could point to besides the fact that Leak was a winner and had a good attitude at the combine.

I like Leak, and hope he does well, but I don't get where he was getting this from either. He had no stats, and simply said Leak has good football knowledge. :roll2:

Lions eyeing Troy Smith in round 2

By Carlos "Big C" Holmes

Monday, February 26, 2007

Many pro-football prognosticators and draft enthusiasts are expecting to hear a quarterback's name called when the Detroit Lions, who own the second overall pick in this year's draft, make their selection on draft day. Well, I'm not so sure that they will. With the team finishing dead last in sacks allowed with 63, the Lions may opt to address another area of need such as offensive tackle and select Joe Thomas, the top-rated offensive lineman entering the draft.
If that is indeed the case, look for the club to snag themselves a quarterback in round two. The player the team may have its sights set on is Ohio State's Heisman Trophy winning QB Troy Smith.

Russell, Smith, Quinn taking different roads

INDIANAPOLIS - The media room at the NFL Scouting Combine probably isn't 84 yards long, which is how far JaMarcus Russell claims he can wing a football. But it's close. And it's about the distance, literally and figuratively, that separates the LSU quarterback from Ohio State's Troy Smith.
There are interview podiums at each end, and just as Smith climbed down from one of them, seemingly uptight and frustrated over questions about his height and diminished NFL Draft status, Russell was mounting the other and dazzling people with his size and soon to be multimillion-dollar smile. No tension there. It wasn't long ago that Smith was drawing the raves while guiding Ohio State to an undefeated regular season and into the national championship game and standing ovations while posing with the Heisman Trophy. Remember that feel-good talk about the Browns being forced to consider this home-grown product with a top-four draft pick?

I continue to hope for Troy to prove all of the "draft experts" wrong, but if reports that he copped out of the 40 due to being out of shape from being on the banquet circuit are true, then you have to worry. Many people don't run at the combine, but don't give some bullshit excuse.

Spielman summarized quite well this afternoon... this was his job interview, and he showed up largely unprepared and unless he lights up the track on OSU's pro day, his draft status will likely suffer for it.
