QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I respectfully disagree with you here. I think Troy is a little bit faster than Vince in an all out sprint. I dont know why he is faster other than God given speed, but from what i see from both of them, I think Troy is faster. Now yes i havent seen them race each other but i think Troy just has a little bit of an edge for speed. I mean when Troy is out of the pocket and committed to running, he is fast, very fast. I just think a 4.75ish 40 time would be a bit high; i would say around a 4.5 (WHEN HE IS IN THE SAME SHAPE HE WAS DURING THE SEASON) IMO

No. Troy isn't nearly as fast a VY. VY looks slower because of the longer strides, but without a doubt in a straight sprint, VY would beat Troy.

Neither man is "slow" and Troy might be a bit quicker laterally, but VY would win just about any sprint.

FWIW Troy has the better arm.

Troy may be more agile (quick), but he's not as fast as Vince straight ahead. VY has a highlight reel full of plays pulling away from defenders... Troy typically got caught from behind eventually. I also think Troy may have been a little faster in 04 than he is now (then again, maybe it's just the slow UM D that year).

I searched and found several sites claiming 4.56-4.58 for VY. So I guess we're both right.
I gotta disagree on the arm too -- I don't think Vince is as accurate as Troy, but from what I saw last year his arm is just as strong.
Also, I agree that in 2005 Troy was, perhaps, faster than Vince. But in 2006 he just wasn't as fast, and it's because I believe he added 10-15 lbs to his frame. His weigh-ins at Sr Bowl and Combine confirm what I thought all year long -- but the scouts seem to think he just got fat.
Bulking up was a good thing though, because it was part of his adjustment to being a throw-first QB. Honestly, I'm not terribly worried about his 40 time -- and neither should the scouts. What he needs to work on is his mechanics, they haven't looked the same since the 8th IMO. He just doesn't look nearly as sharp and is very inconsistent. I hope he sorts that out now, before the draft... but if not, I'm sure it can be ironed out when he has coaches again and some team will find themselves with a sleeper QB.

Even if he's 210 instead of 195 or so, his 40 time will still be better than 90% of the NFL caliber QBs either in the league already or coming out this year.

IIRC, he's about 225, but I agree... he's got plenty speed/quickness to be mobile and enough weight to take a couple hits and keep ticking.

Dating back to High School, Vince has always had a faster 40 time than Troy(Nike football camp). Troy had a significantly faster shuttle time (also Nike Camp). So like jwinslow already said. Vince is the faster straight away runner, and Troy is the more agile of the two.

That bulk Troy put on really paid off when he was taking ruthless blind shots from tackles and ends versus the likes of PSU and scUM. He just kept getting up and going right back at it. I think a lot of us have already forgotten Troy's grit because of his elusiveness and ability to get out of most sacks/hits. He took some quality beatings and always sprung back up.

I realize that speed is an important trait for any individual in the NFL, but I don't think there is an incredible need for Troy to run a 4.5 or anything like that. Troy is not going to come in the league and try to be Mike Vick or Vince Young. He is going to try to be Troy Smith. The Troy Smith that was a successful QB for the Buckeyes his entire career. The kid that proved that he is a throwing QB and not a running QB. He will try to beat you with his arm and his pocket awareness before he tries to run on you. He is athletic and mobile to create more time to find an open receiver, but he will make his reads before he takes off running. That being said, I think it is more important for him to show his skills throwing the ball, ie accuracy and distance drills. Him winning the longest pass competition was impressive, shows how strong of an arm he has. What has always impressed me the most has been his pocket presence, poise, arm strength and accuracy in throwing the ball. Then his being able to move in the pocket and evade defenders is butter. It's a complete package with a TON of heart.

Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith did little to separate himself from the mediocre group of 19 quarterbacks that worked out before hundreds of coaches and scouts Sunday. Afterward, two scouts predicted that Smith would go either late in the third or the fourth round. Another scout guessed fourth or fifth round.

Probly the same scouts who predicted Donte Whitner would go in the 3rd round...

NFL COMBINE
Scouts giving Smith short shrift

Monday, February 26, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Indianapolis- General consensus among experts at the NFL Scouting Combine is that Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith might not go very high but he could go far.
Most analysts predict the Heisman Trophy winner and Cleveland Glenville High product will go in the third or fourth round of the draft primarily because of his height (6-0), but that he has what it takes to be a starter in the NFL.
"He's probably a third-round pick," said NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock. "But I think that two to three years from now, he's so athletic and smart and tough, he'll have an opportunity to play."

Cont'd...
