QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Sorry but BQ played behind a terrible offensive line and played under pressure like that probably 4-5 games this year. Jeez, Brady could barely walk after the USC game this year. So let's not go out and say it was ok for TS to have a bad game because of pressure but dog Brady when he played under similar conditions......

Family matters drive Smith

OSU quarterback signs with DeBartolo agency

By David Lee Morgan Jr.

Beacon Journal sportswriter

YOUNGSTOWN - If there's one thing to know about Ohio State quarterback and 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, it's that family means a lot to him.
When it came time to choose an agent, Smith wanted someone who felt the same way.
Smith found that in Eddie DeBartolo Jr. and signed with DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment Friday afternoon in Youngstown.
Although DeBartolo is a native of Youngstown, the company is based in Tampa.

This is ridiculous. No way can you honestly say that you had TS as a top 20 pick pre-BCS game and then as a 4th or 5th rounder after the game. NFL scouts have got to be smart enough to realize that one game in which a QB's offensive line totally folds is not indicative of how good a QB will be in the NFL.

As for Quinn, my thinking regarding why TS is a better QB is by looking at the scUM game. Quinn looked horrible and only started putting up any numbers in garbage time whereas TS totally dismanted the same defense.

If the browns draft brady quinn i will have had enough.

First off, in the case of the browns.. yes it is. thats what he'll be dealing with week in & out.

Secondly, from all i've heard.. Troy had alot of recievers open he was missing. Not to mention, when he had time he still was playing very very poorly. Not slamming him, just had a bad game - unfair to put it all on the o-line even though they did suck.

I agree. Troy looked confused, frazzled, and downright intimidated out there... and you can't blame that solely on the O-line. The closest thing I've seen to that was the 2005 PSU game where he couldn't get anything going and we ended up losing.

Didn't realize Eddie Jr. was still around. Didn't he do some time for some kind of gambling something or another in Louisiana?

Here ya go...

"With the plea, DeBartolo avoided prison. But he agreed to pay $1 million in penalties, serve two years of probation and testify in future trials against ex-Governor Edwin Edwards and his son, Stephen, key targets in a federal probe into the state's gambling industry".

First of all, Kiper obviously does not know what he is talking about. How can a Heisman Trophy Winner go in the 4th or 5th round. It does make sense; Troy won the trophy for a reason. Does Kiper know that the Heisman Trophy goes to the best college football player in the nation? Im shocked at his comments.

Second of all, one game is not going to ruin a players college or NFL career. He had a bad game, hes human, we all make mistakes. His line didnt show up either so that didnt help, but i mean everyone is so hard on him and now hes being projected so low, because of one game.

ND's o-line folded against Michigan but I guess that doesn't count huh ?

Just because Troy Smith is a Heisman winner does not mean he is granted high draft status. There have been plenty of examples of Heisman winners going late, or even not at all, in the NFL Draft. (Chris Weinke,Danny Wuerffel,Jason White,Eric Crouch,Gino Toretta,Ty Detmer, and Charlie Ward). That in no way means that I agree with Kiper, there is much Smith can do restore faith in his abilities at the Senior Bowl and combine.

Ohio State's pass protection folded against Florida, does that not also count then?

Thank you.

I guess everyone skipped my previous post. Kiper said more than the one or two sentences some of you want to bitch about. Give it a rest. I have no reason to defend Kiper, but taking one point (out of many Kiper made) and spending page after page bitching about it is annoying...It's only January for crying out loud.

Hey you haven't seen me dog TS one time for that game.

Well, to be fair your thrust in this thread was not wholly clear to me ..

So let's not go out and say it was ok for TS to have a bad game because of pressure but dog Brady when he played under similar conditions......

Which can be read both as a defense of Quinn, and that it was not OK for Troy Smith to have a bad game ..

OR

That with poor protection you shouldn't shoot either player's reputation ..

Given your response above it seems that it is the latter thesis of "look to O-line" as a significant factor that you wished to convey - with which I agree.

The point, I think, most of us we're making is that if you're going to drop one player 3 rounds because he a bad game -- the only bad game he's had all year -- how can you keep another player whose had several bad games in the top-5?
I seriously doubt Troy won't have a team after the first 2 rounds, and I know there are plenty of opportunities for him to raise (or lower) his prospects. The point was that this shows how full of malarkey Mel Kiper is. He was obviously looking for a reason to drop Troy Smith, OR acting willfully ignorant and having a suspension of disbelief to keep Brady Quinn so high.

The point is that Mel is a self-aggrandizing dick. And he is.
