QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I came across a comment by some asshole in Idaho. This was a Bill Simmons chat.

Colver (Moscow, Idaho): Was Troy Smith's performance Monday night the single worst championship performance ever? Is it possible for the game to have gone worse for his potential draft stock? I mean, when the fact that he invented the 12 step drop in a game is arguably the best thing that came from his performance, I think we may be talking about a monumentally bad performance. He's a running QB who had 6 positive yards between passing and running! That's incredible. I can't wait for the Lions to draft him and turn him into a receiver.
Bill Simmons: Here's my question: Why don't we announce the Heisman winner after the bowl season? What's the point of doing it so early? Same for announcing the NFL All-Pro teams before the end of the season. What's the rush? It's like announcing the baseball MVP in mid-September. I don't get it.

Idiotic. So, had we waited until after the bowl season, who gets it instead of Troy? McFadden? Doubt it. Quinn? Leak? He was wildly inconsistent this year. Regardless of the duck he layed on Jan. 8th, he was still the "most outstanding player" this year.

If I had to guess, I'd say the problem with this guy and many like him (especially those on the east or west coast) is that they are judging Troy by the NC championship game. If that's the only time they saw the Buckeyes play all year, of course they're not going to appreciate Troy's abilities. What's important is that those of us who follow Buckeye football know what Troy is made of and how deserving he is of the Heisman. Anyway, fans in the midwest (especially Big 10 fans) know how good Troy has been. Just ask anyone associated with TSUN. :) Don't let ill-informed casual fans of the game get you down! :osu:

Tory's draft status

Just walked in from work, turned on ESPN and Mel Kiper Jr. is talking about Troy Smith and the NFL draft. Kiper said Troy is now a 4th or 5th round pick based on his horrible performance Monday in the BCS game. He went on to say that Troy was projected top 20 before that game, and now the NFL scouts were shown what everyone feared, lack of height, speed, etc. WOW!

I'm wondering if these people even watched the game. 3 huge keys in his poor performance:

1. No protection. Guys were in his face all night.
2. No Ted Ginn.
3. 51 days off. He clearly wasn't used to game speed. His reads were slower and his decision making wasn't the same.

Kiper is a dick. If Troy dropped 3-4 rounds after a single game where he was screwed by the Oline and his #1 receiver wasn't there, how has BQ been #1 up to bowl season and then still only drops to #3? For Troy, this kind of meltdown has been the exception -- not the rule. Brady hasn't even shown an exception to the rule that he cracks (unless you want to argue about USC?) Kiper's comment on Quinn shows his bias even more "poised and at his best under pressure" !? Note that I have nothing wrong with Brady, I think he can be a solid starter in the NFL -- but he's not top-10 material unless you're Detroit or Oakland.
I realize Mel's board is based off of what he hears from scouts, and not his own opinion, but I think he's got selective hearing in this case. He also dropped Pitcock (who, I believe, was previously top-10/15), who has otherwise had a pretty darn good year. I think Mel is just looking for excuses to drop Buckeyes.

Mel Kiper doesn't give a shit about the Buckeyes. He is a dick. Just not for that reason.

I have no reason to think he has a personal vendetta... but I think he's definitely used the 8th as a reason to drop the Buckeyes off the planet on his board. We're not ESPN hype material, never will be, and I actually prefer it that way. If Pitcock was playing for ND, Michigan, or USC -- I'm pretty confident he'd still be in the top-20 of Kiper's board...

Anyone saying he dropped 2 or 3 rounds in the draft was just looking for a reason to say that. Many of the people saying he dropped already had him in the 3rd or 4th round and just now have a reason. He has the senior bowl and the combines to show what he is truly about. Like we all know, the O-line gave him little to no protection in the NC game, and the play calling was not that good either IMO. We have all seen what he can do. He has amazing accuracy and has put some passes in slots that I did not think was even possible. What all the "experts" are saying won't mean shit when the people who are really interested see what he can do. I am still projecting a first or second round pick for him. As long as he gets put in the right system, he will shine.

Alright people. Calm down. It was conveniently left out in the post above that Kiper also said nothing is set in stone this early. This is just the beginning of the process. No one has any measureables yet. No one has worked out for the NFL personnel guys. It is a fluid situation, so take a deep breath and see what happens once TS gets in front of the people who matter...
