QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

No, I do not think that, but that is not what Kiper said. That is my whole point. He gave a range of 2nd to 4th round, "if I had to guess", and made a point of saying "what I say now doesn't matter anyway. It's too early in the process. No one in the NFL has had a chance to look at TS up close. There's plenty of opportunity for TS to solidify his position.", etc., etc....Someone, a couple pages ago, misrepresented what was said and everyone has run with it. That's why I'm tired of the bitch-fest about Kiper...

OK, in my original post I quoted only what I heard Kiper say on ESPN. As I stated before, I walked in from work and turned on the tube and quoted what I heard Kiper say. That was all I heard him say, then they switched to another analyst. If you heard him say more than that, then I stand corrected. I am in Arizona, and probably got a small clip of the original comments he made earlier in the day since we aqre a couple hours behind the east coast. However, if you go to the ESPN site and look at Kiper's top 5 QB rankings, he has someone I have never heard of from Stanford (Trent Edwards) ranked above Troy Smith. So, you can defend that moron if you want, I think he's full of it. Take a look at the stats for the QB from Stanford, and tell me how he rates higher than troy Smith in the draft! http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=137101

Hell, he didn't even play the last five games of the season! I am not here to bash Kiper, just commenting on where he thought Troy would go based on the NC game performance. And for this guy from Stanford to be rated higher for not playing the last five games is insane.

Quarterbacks
1. Brady Quinn, Notre Dame
2. *JaMarcus Russell, LSU
3. Drew Stanton, Michigan State
4. Trent Edwards, Stanford
5. Troy Smith, Ohio State

5a. Matt Moore, Oregon State

5b. Kevin Kolb, Houston

As was stated earlier in the thread......Kiper is a dick!

How on earth is Stanton ahead of Troy? I would hope people realize that height isn't everything. Just look at the 2 QBs in next weeks NFC Championship game: Brees and Grossman. IMO, Troy probably lost some money by sliding a round or 2 in the draft, but when all is said and done, he's going to make it int the NFL.

Troy is going to make it in the NFL. The fact that he is going to end up later in the draft may hurt him in the short term in terms of cash. In the long run, Troy will be just fine.

Teams that we should hope decide to take Troy

Baltimore - Troy Smith could easily be the next Steve McNair. Steve McNair is 33. With targets such as Mark Clayton, Todd Heap, and and Derick Mason, plus a great running game with Jamal Lewis, Troy would fit in just fine.

The Ravens are the Buckeyes of the NFL when it comes to quarterbacks. Brian Billick had Trent Dilfer win his Super Bowl. Jim Tressel had Craig Krenzel win his National Championship. Kyle Boller came in heavily touted in Baltimore. Justin Zwick came in heavily touted in at Ohio State. Steve McNair came in, won big games against their rival, the Steelers (He beat the Steelers at home for the first time in Heinz Field's history), and took them all the way until they had to play a playoff game. Same with Troy.

As much as I dislike Baltimore, it is the best home for Troy Smith. If Troy learns to escape the pocket, in a fashion similar to his 2005 season, he could easily lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl. Baltimore is more likely to get Troy Smith because Troy Smith dropped down later (Baltimore has holes they need to solidify in terms of Linebacker and Line Depth).

Carolina - Delhomme's career is wearing down. However, he should be able to last 2 or more seasons. Carolina has bigger holes that need to be filled in the earlier rounds. Carolina has good targets in Steve Smith and Keyshawn Johnson (However long Keyshawn stays. Even if he eventually retires, that hole can be addressed in the draft). Their offensive line is solid. If Chris Weinke can throw for 423 yards, only God knows how much Troy can throw for.

Kansas City - Same as above. Trent Green is 36, but he can hang on for a couple more years. Troy would have an easy job at first (hand the ball off to Larry Johnson). He has a big target for the early part of his career in Tony Gonzalez. Kansas City needs to address Defensive Tackle, Wide Receiver, and Offensive Tackle in this draft. Eddie Kennison would be his main target (until he retires). Samie Parker is a good 2.5 wide receiver. Don't be surprised if Kansas City drafts both Troy Smith and Anthony Gonzalez.

Teams we should hope Troy doesn't go to
Detroit - They will go after Brady Quinn more than likely anyway.

Oakland - Since Brady Quinn is too good boy for them, they will get JaMarcus Russell and ruin his career instead.

Cleveland - Early in his career? No. Later, when Cleveland is built? Yes. Cleveland needs an offensive line first.

Miami - They are an organization with too many question marks right now.

Most of those guys are taller.
That does count in the NFL.
Head to head it's no contest!

Yes, height counts in the NFL...for some reason. If you look at Troy's O-Line in college though:

Boone: 6'8"
Rehring: 6'8"
Datish: 6'5"
Downing: 6'4"
Barton: 6'6"

That's as big or bigger than any NFL line you will see out there. I don't think he'll have a problem seeing over the line. Although, I think the long, lanky ends of Florida created some problems for him throwing the ball into the flats. Another few inches might have negated that.

Kid has intangibles though and that's all there is to it. Pocket presence, leadership, strong, accurate arm, can shake a would-be tackler in the backfield, etc. etc. etc. He is a going to be a Day One steal for somebody in the 2nd round.

drew stanton ? rated ahead of troy smith (that is hilarious) yeah he played for michigan state and thus he got killed every single game but talk about quite possibly the worst senior year EVER! one would think his draft stock wouldve plummeted after this season.

Idiotic. So, had we waited until after the bowl season, who gets it instead of Troy? McFadden? Doubt it. Quinn? Leak? He was wildly inconsistent this year. Regardless of the duck he layed on Jan. 8th, he was still the "most outstanding player" this year.
no no no... you are looking at it the wrong way. it's the psychology of winning the award that makes for horrible bowl performances by the Heisman Winners. the kid just won the biggest award in college football, took the show circuit, and spent the better part of two months listening to everyone tell him how great he is. he has nothing left to play for. the bowl game is anticlimactic, no matter what the stakes. the hunger is gone, and there's nothing left to prove; especially nothing left to prove against a one loss team when yours is undefeated and already beat an undefeated #2. Troy was the most outstanding player on the best team. Troy's season unofficially ended on 11/18, and was officially put to rest on 12/08.

and on the flip side, the opponent gets to spend the better part of two months watching everyone blow smoke up the guy's ass, and use that for motivation.

winning the Heisman isn't a jinx, per se. but it DOES make it extremely difficult to win the bowl game...

i agree 100% that the awards shouldn't be given out until after the bowl games. not saying the outcome would have been any different, but well, yeah, i am saying that. the outcome would have been different.

Views on Smith's NFL value vary

From high praise to stinging criticism, Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith is getting plenty of both from NFL scouts in the wake of the Buckeyes' 41-14 loss to Florida in the BCS Championship Game.
Smith's poor performance didn't help his draft status.

"But he hasn't totally blemished himself," said Vince Newsome, assistant director of pro personnel for the Baltimore Ravens..

The pros love looking at the physical size of prospects.
But, having seen Brady play many times the past 2 years.
And having seen Russell play.
I wouldn't take either over Troy!
And can you logically hold the Florida game against him when he was running for his life most of the night?

Kiper has Smith ranked tied for fifth for senior quarterbacks (but somehow Jamarcus Russell is qualifies for that list :roll2: ).

5. Troy Smith, Ohio State

Trent Edwards threw 6 TDs and 6 picks this year for one of the worst BCS conference teams in the country. Enough said.

As far as JaMarcus Russell goes, it's amazing to me how high a QB can climb just b/c he had a good day against ND's pathetic defense. Even if I needed a QB, I wouldn't draft Russell any higher than the second round. If someone uses a top 10 pick on him, that team will be VERY disappointed in 5 years.
