QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Am I missing something as to why he wasn't the #1 QB when the season started?
Ok I will take this bait....

IMHO, as evidenced in the first few games, JT envisioned a serious vertical passing attack this year to soften the defense and utilize the talents of the WR crew. Zwick, as proved to a fault, is the QB who will step up into the pocket (too long as was shown) to give the WRs the time to run the deep routes, stretch the secondary, and force the safeties to commit. I would also infer, although this is just from a gathering of infrequent practice notes/observations, that JZ was the better of the two in the pre-snap read.

Somewhere along the line, JZ's arm was injured...the Iowa game was the final straw with it. His ball lost the zip, his spiral became more erratic than before, and his poise subsided to non-existent. However, JT for some reason stuck with Zwick during this injury...a poor decision both physically and mentally for the kid. He regressed as a player.

In steps TS with that gun. He may not make all of the proper reads, step up in the pocket when he should, or have that polished, consistent long ball yet, but the kid is a player. His ability to improvise drives a micromanager like JT up the wall. However, his results cannot be argued. Question the opposition, the playcalling, whatever...but this kid has been the most impressive GAME QB on the roster thus far.

Just my theory so take it for what it is worth....

grad....mid-way through fall practice zwick was struggling with a sore shoulder....im guessing it only became more troublesome....
I can definitely see it...

I have a feeling the offensive plans for this year went up in flames with that shoulder.

TS is not and should not be used in that type of offense. Over the past two weeks, we have seen glimpses of that tailored gameplan to fit his strengths.

What most fans don't understand is the timing needed for a play to work. I would love to see the rollouts, flooded zones, veer looks, etc with TS, but I am also well aware that every step is crucial to the timing of the plays. Most people think a coach just draws up the offense for the week, the kids rep it for 4 days and then they play the game. Sorry, but it doesn't work that way. Change takes time.

great stuff 21....i have to admit i am always worried with a qb that takes a bunch of hits....i just think that is asking for trouble....

however; i also have to admit that i am excited about what troy can bring to the offense the rest of the year....

dont take this the wrong way people...but troy is the first black/athletic qb the buckeyes have had that can throw and run......jackson and bellisorry couldnt run with smith and neither could even begin to throw like smith...

point is...i am interested to see what he does this week...i just have to get over the distaste for the qb to get hit over and over...

but i am excited by his play....even more so after watching the psu game for the third time tonite....

Corny's passing is not even close to being in the same league as Smith's

strohs....corny was part of woody's famous quote...

"only three things can happen when you throw the football...and two are bad.."
Haha, true, and we complain about JT's handcuffing of the QB's.
I would love to see Smith get to use his arm more often.
Those couple third down conversions late in the game were impressive throws,
at least it seemed from south stands with the team moving away from us.

Seriously.. you come in here and start this huge pissing match and don't even get half of your facts straight. So I'll set one straight that hasn't been yet. MIAMI GOT BEAT BY NORTH CAROLINA.

ugh! You want to come in and argue, check your shit before you post!

If you had been paying attention, you'd have seen (or at least eventually figured out) that the "stats" you are referring to was a shot at the previous comment about knowing stats. The point was that every Sat. there are a lot of upsets, and that Penn State nearly pulled one off against Iowa. Who cares if it was N. Carolina or BigBadUniv.of SoWhat.

As for my jumping in to argue, where was the arguing? Because I didn't jump in line to kiss Smith's behind means that I was arguing? It's called a difference of opinion. I expected to take a shot from Mili. Have been for years. No big deal. For you, tho, is different, because you are a nobody. A punk who talks tough on his keyboard. GIVE ME YOUR LUNCH MONEY, SISSYBOY. Then go back talking your garbage on BN's. I'm done with you.

KillerNut-

While I respect your opinion I totally disagree. I disagree that you're saying Troy is not the answer. Is he the answer? I dunno maybe? but to say he's not after what he's done so far through 2 weeks is crazy. Yes we only had one drive, but if you watched the game you'd realize mistakes, field positions, and also defensive play cost the offense many opportunities. Now I realize we need to capitalize and score, but damn I don't think Troy nor any other QB should be held accountable for holding, fumbles (unless its by the QB), mishandled punts, or hell even our defense giving up too much rushing yards. You're acting like Troy has done nothing to garner him as the starter, and you're definatly wrong. through his first 2 starts I think he's managed the game, and himself alot better than Zwick did. Now I'm a Troy smith fan, but I also want whatever gets us a win and I can honestly say I never felt good with Zwick back there. Other thing is you're act'n like Zwick would completely tear defenses apart with his passing game, and you're also wrong their. He was Decent in the Cincy game with 2 picks (Troy Smith was 3-5 with a Td, 0 Int), had a very good First half against Marshall (horrible second half 2 Int), couldn't do a damn thing against NcState and missed recievers left/right, and down right sucked against NW/Wisc/Iowa. Zwick has had 1 half of very good football and thats it. Hell you've even gone as far to say maybe Boeckman should play? I mean has Troy really played that bad in your opinion? Because I now can actually think we have a shot against Michigan where as 2 weeks ago I was sure we were going to get killed with Zwick.

Ram

Now yes this is an opinion question that I started, and while people have disagreed and agreed you've taken it to the max my man. You've not only gave completely wrong facts, but also bashed Troy for no reason. You've said some of the pointless things so far that I actually had to go check and see if you were actually a buckeye fan. Seriously I figured/thought you was a fan from like Michigan or something (the michigan sign with the cross through it gave it away). Now I know Troy Smith hasn't proved a whole lot yet due to the offense buttoning it up, but you've said everything possible to make it sound like Troy is just lucky, playing horrible teams, and also you even act like he just isn't capable of doing what we need to win. If you're going to give your opinion we'd atleast like to see some kind of reason or atleast give accurate stats. You don't need to get all pissed off at Llyodsev, because honestly you did just jump in here to get it started. Also I started this thread mainly because I was excited about what Troy can do, and I was so excited about this kid that I felt I wanted to see if the others had the same feeling so find another reason why we think its arguing.

I agree. Troy Smith has done well under the circumstances. He has shown a lot of spirit and brought a new hope to a downtrodden football team. However, he has done it against a weak IU team and was handcuffed against PSU. So I would say he is doing well, but we will have to wait and see how he will do during the true tests in the remaining 3 tough games.

Would Smith have been able to turn things around against Wisconsin or especially against Iowa? Not that he is not talented enough, but coming in during the middle of a game like that would have been difficult and could have crushed his confidence. I don't think this is necessarily the case, I just wonder what all of you think of this idea.

Well I was hoping he'd start before this year even started. I loved both Zwick and Smith to start off the year, but Smith just has such a presence on the field IMO. For some reason when I see him on the field I start thinking oh man what can this kid do this play? Kind of like when Ginn has the ball on punts I'm always just waiting for that big play. The reason is probably because he's such a weapon with his feet, but I never thought he'd throw the ball so well like he has.

I think bringing him in against Wisconsin/Iowa at the end of the game might of actually not of helped him but in saying that he did play against Iowa and did fine so what do I know? It could help, but it could also hurt his progress. It just depends on how this kid handles pressure.

Anyone who saw TS make his 'debut' at the 2003 spring game just had to say, wow !! Not at any particular thing he did, but at the way he did it. He appears (at least to me) to throw the ball effortlessly. When I saw him throwing in warmups, I couldn't believe how beautiful his throws looked. Of course, you still need to be accurate, and I'm hoping he can improve that with game action. Not once was I enamored with his speed, but it was always his arm. :groove: :groove: :groove: :groove: :groove:
