QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

No, I don't think JZ is a bad quarterback, but I've been saying for the past two weeks that the team seems to be working better as a unit with TS. It's almost as if they have more confidence in him than JZ. I've never said that JZ should be kicked off the island I think he was just too nervous on the field and needs a little more time to adjust to the college level of play.

how can anyone be brain dead enough to compare ncstate and penn st.....ncstate was the first road game many of the kids have ever played in .....give me a freaking break....same goes for a road/night game/landmine in northwestern....

psu was played at home against a team that has a weaker pulse than pat summerall.......and indiana wasn't even a good practice....

no comparison.....

BuckeyeRob, my bad about the yardage numbers, I should have said passing yards. We actually had only 161 of them against IU, and based upon what Kern10, who is a very credible guy, posted on Bucknuts as I recall he said IU was the worst rated Pass Defense at the time we played them. In any case you agree they have one of the worst D's in the country, hard to say there is much difference between the 117th and the 106th.

We can all come up with stats to support any conclusion we want to draw about the QBs. There is no denying that we have greatly improved our running and blocking execution against two inferior opponents, allowing us to play a much more conservative passing game. Until we see how Troy performs when the game is on his shoulders, or we see how Zwick plays with the better line play and running game, I think it is premature to heap all the credit on Smith. A team always "looks" better playing a weak opponent.

Im not letting you off the hook. You cant call the #7 ranked total defense as an inferior oppoent. Penn State is 31st vs the run. You can cite the 2-5 record of PSU til your blue in the face but it doesnt change the fact that the OSU offesne was facing one of the better defenses in the country on Saturday. If not for a bad call on a fumble by the running back OSU score more offensive points. The backs averaged 4.7 and 4.3 ypc respectively and thats better than about any time this season outside the IU defense which is putrid. The point was and is that the OFFENSE looked pretty good at being able to move the ball and get a push on a very, very good PSU defense. The OFFENSE is showing steady improvement and that is a DIRECT result of the personnel changes.

Smith does a better job of not turning the ball over.... you simply can not argue with that point because its a fact (at least thus far in the season.) Troy executes and makes good decisions, has the stonger arm and is a better runner. Would Zwick have lead the buckeyes to wins over IU and PSU? Probably.... The fact of the matter is that ever since the 4th quarter of the Northwestern game, the offense began to digress. It is now showing growth and improvement. As long as it continues to do that, you keep going with Smith. If Troy starts making horrid decisions and creates turn overs like Justin did then, you may see Tressel go back to Justin. But until that happens, Troy should be the starter

Not to mention we shot ourselves in the foot numerous times with offensive penalties, costing us huge gains on at least two occasions and first downs on a couple more. Ginn's drop on the crossing route cost us 15-20 yards (if not a TD). Keep in mind we only ran 52 offensive plays, averaging just under 4 yards per play, which is not bad against a top-10 defense. Smith also averaged 7.8 yards per pass attempt (not completion...attempt), which is very good, especially with the wind that was there. However, our backs didn't average 4.7 and 4.3 ypc...it was 4.6 (Hall) and 3.9 (Pittman).

Good things to say about Troy Smith:

He hasn't turned the ball over much

He has scramble ability which helps a weak offensive line, and gives the defense something else to fear.

He is capable of making good-great throws

He is a good manager of the game.

The team seems to play harder when he is in there

Bad things to say about Troy Smith:

He doesn't do a good job of looking through his progressions, (pulls the ball down to run too quickly some times).

He is not as accurate as the Justin Zwick with his passes on a consistant basis.

The offense has not looked great under his watch other than one lucky pass (and there really is no other way to see it) to Ginn, and the play of the offensive line has improved which could have as much to do with Steve Rehring getting a chance to play more than anything else.

My View

Troy Smith in my humble opinion has earned the right to keep playing until he has some struggles. I certainly wouldn't have any reservations about putting Zwick back out there, because Troy Smith certainly has some flaws. Something to keep in mind is we had 1 scoring drive the hole game versus Penn State. That is not exactly exceptable, in fact if Zwick had done the same thing I think people would be all over him. Troy Smith I think has taken advantage of lowered expectations and produced well. I still don't believe he is the type QB that can beat Michigan, or other great teams. If Zwick is a bust then Boeckman should be the starter next year. Smith is not the answer at QB, or at least hasn't shown that he is yet.

I am thinking more about the early season when he put bombs to Holmes on the money. He made some really good passses in the NW game. Not that he had great accuracy, but more I think is fair to say, and the pressure in those games was much greater than anything Troy Smith has faced since Iowa put in their second team defense.

I have not seen a Troy Smith well thrown ball be caught by a WR yet. I will admit some have been dropped.
