QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

My take on all of this is that I really don’t care why or how it came about but Tate’s chosen the right place/culture for him. Nowhere else prizes “style” over substance quite like Cryami. Tate’s clearly a wannabe gangster and he’s found a home. Burrow provided the template for how something like this should be handled. Tate was too much of a child to follow it. Hit the books, get the credits, work hard and develop and then be qb1 at tOSU or elsewhere as a grad. That was, clearly, too much for DJ T-Mart and his entitled need for instantaneous gratification. So be it.

This reads like a recruiting sour grapes response o.O

Fair points on the overconfidence effect stuff. There’s a part of me that even wonders if he may not have been fine had he not ran his twitters off without thinking. He may very well have been QB1a/b going into a battle and after the Twitter crap was advised that there wasn’t going to be a place for him with that behavior. Regardless of how natural it may be to reach for the twitters... I can tell you first had as the father of a kid going through college recruiting, everyone — from his club coaches to his HS coaches to the coaches he’s talking with at various schools — emphasizes the importance of keeping a squeaky clean SM image. This is part of the game, if you can’t control yourself, get off the media. And it’s not like this is the first instance. Going back to his HS days and tweeting during a game? So, say what you will... he’s been given council on how to behave and he didn’t handle himself well.

And to be fair, I don’t begrudge the kid. I wish him success when not playing us. But the same way I’d be disappointed with any of my players being stupid on social media, I have the same feeling here.

If only ESPN followed that same rationale we could ditch another former QB...

There lies the difference on how a lot of Buckeye fans will percieve Tate's exit vs. Burrow's exit.

Apparently he didnt have the credits to do that. It was a rumor that turned out false.

The smart move would still have been to spend the next year competing, finish the degree, and then transfer as a grad w/2yrs to a guaranteed starting job... instead he bailed fast and is taking a gamble on a very suspect waiver.
If the waiver doesnt work, who knows what the situation at Miami is this time next year... could find himself transferring again to an FCS school and no degree.

I think people are being way too harsh on Tate. Yeah, he's not the most humble player to come through OSU, and yeah, I'm disappointed that he left - but he did it cleanly and without burning any bridges. I haven't heard anything negative from him about his time at OSU. He's been a model transfer thus far.

Secondly, I find it very hard to judge the kid without knowing the full story of what conversations took place between him, Urban and Day during his recruitment, before this past season, and before he transferred.

The kid wants to play - that much has always been clear, and he made it crystal clear to the coaching staff when he committed. We told him he would have to compete for it, obviously, but we accepted that commitment with the knowledge that he wants to play.

He sits the first year patiently. He competes for the job this past season - but loses out to Haskins/Burrow. Again, he wants to play - thus came the initial exploration of transferring, prior to the season. Urban and Day, from the sounds of it, convinced him to stay by selling him on the empty QB room once Haskins leaves early. So he agrees to stay for this past season.

We get to today - Tate's been patiently biding his time with the expectation of getting his shot and a relatively empty QB room. But no - all of a sudden he sees his starting QB and his new HC courting a highly-rated transfer in Justin Fields. If I was Tate, Ill admit Id be somewhat annoyed.

I get it - you have to compete, nothing is handed to you, etc etc. But if this was your kid, and he commits to a school with the intention of playing early, then he wants to transfer when that doesn't happen but is talked into not doing so and into investing another year of his eligibility into the program, with the expectation the job will be his afterwards - and right after the year ends, they go and get a transfer?

I don't know, I can't really fault him or his family for forgoing another QB competition and wanting the sure-thing.

Just my 0.02$. Not knocking how OSU handled this in any way - I am ecstatic to have Fields. I just think Tate's goals and OSU's goals were clearly not aligned, and transferring was the best possible solution for both parties. Best of luck at Miami.

I'm not going to criticize this kid. I hope he becomes a great Buckeye. But for football and non-football reasons, I don't think he will ever take a meaningful snap at Ohio State as a QB. If I'm wrong, then ridicule me 2-5 years from now. But right now, that's what I think.

I'm looking at what is in front of him, what is likely coming behind him, his height - and his personality. Let's just say this young man isn't lacking in confidence. Putting all that together, I see a recipe for an unhappy QB. But if I'm wrong, I'll be happy for him and the Buckeyes.

Interesting thing is that Tater finally won me over with his comments at the Rose Bowl - and a couple weeks later he confirmed my initial impressions from 2 years ago.

I wish the Tater the best, but I suspect the things that limited him at OSU will limit him at Miami.

I am most disappointed that he didn't transfer to Idaho - which seems like the perfect fit. :)

I think Tate being miffed about the Fields courtship is understandable, but when was he playing early?

As in spot duty after JT graduated and the loser of Dwayne/Burrow left?

What things limited him at OSU? Having the QB with the best career stats in B1G history & the QB with the best single season stats ahead of him on the depth chart?
