I think people are being way too harsh on Tate. Yeah, he's not the most humble player to come through OSU, and yeah, I'm disappointed that he left - but he did it cleanly and without burning any bridges. I haven't heard anything negative from him about his time at OSU. He's been a model transfer thus far.
Secondly, I find it very hard to judge the kid without knowing the full story of what conversations took place between him, Urban and Day during his recruitment, before this past season, and before he transferred.
The kid wants to play - that much has always been clear, and he made it crystal clear to the coaching staff when he committed. We told him he would have to compete for it, obviously, but we accepted that commitment with the knowledge that he wants to play.
He sits the first year patiently. He competes for the job this past season - but loses out to Haskins/Burrow. Again, he wants to play - thus came the initial exploration of transferring, prior to the season. Urban and Day, from the sounds of it, convinced him to stay by selling him on the empty QB room once Haskins leaves early. So he agrees to stay for this past season.
We get to today - Tate's been patiently biding his time with the expectation of getting his shot and a relatively empty QB room. But no - all of a sudden he sees his starting QB and his new HC courting a highly-rated transfer in Justin Fields. If I was Tate, Ill admit Id be somewhat annoyed.
I get it - you have to compete, nothing is handed to you, etc etc. But if this was your kid, and he commits to a school with the intention of playing early, then he wants to transfer when that doesn't happen but is talked into not doing so and into investing another year of his eligibility into the program, with the expectation the job will be his afterwards - and right after the year ends, they go and get a transfer?
I don't know, I can't really fault him or his family for forgoing another QB competition and wanting the sure-thing.
Just my 0.02$. Not knocking how OSU handled this in any way - I am ecstatic to have Fields. I just think Tate's goals and OSU's goals were clearly not aligned, and transferring was the best possible solution for both parties. Best of luck at Miami.
