QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

r/CFB is the college football forum on Reddit, which is the largest forums on the internet.

The forums are referred to as sub-reddits, and the URL is always the sub, so the address would be reddit.com/r/cfb

There is a sub Reddit for pretty much everything you can imagine, and many things that you would never imagine, nor would you want to. Rule 34 applies.

Have fun.

LOL.... Yes, I'm fully aware of all the terms. It was just a joke-- for the most part-- we tried using Instagram once (for our wedding) and failed miserably (plus I forgot the password :ohbrother:).

Haven't visited r/cfb recently. Gotta get over there soon if it's all it's built up to be...

P.S. I highly recommend r/confession or r/shitty_confessions.

see...this is where I disagree. Day has coached this kid for two years and didn’t hesitate to pursue Fields. He knows what he had in Tate and that didn’t fit Day’s system at all. why even try to force the square peg into the round hole? OSU did not do Tate ‘dirty’. his scholarship was not pulled. the system/coach he was brought in to run changed. he decided to move on. good for him. but I don’t think for one minute this move wasnt calculated. Day knew Tate would likely transfer with Fields coming in. he weighed that option and went after Fields.
My daughter was recruited over this year for Catcher. she didn’t tweet smack or whine about it when coach was showing the new girl love this fall season. she is happy in school and her scholarship isnt going anywhere and she competes. just sharing this to say I know a little bit what this is like. it sucks but look at the big picture. school and happiness. Tathan will be happy in Miami. just looks weak for running smack on social media and bolting without a challenge.

I never said they did him dirty or anything remotely similar to that.
We're back to 3 QBs and need to look at a 2nd xfer after whiffing on Mathis and prematurely letting Tate walk... before Fields' waiver has even been processed.
It's been mismanaged. Damage isnt that bad, but nowhere did i say anything even close to having done Martell wrong.

Understand his decision. I obviously wish he would have stayed but I understand. I'll be rooting for him on the Canes

Not even spending the night locked in a room with Jimmy Harbaugh getting directly hit by a meteor could make me root for the Canes...

Uh....BRB to think of a better analogy.

Tathan's pretty much dead to me.

Personally I think Day should go find a high school QB that isn't committed yet. I'd prefer a guy like Kenny Guiton was, someone that will be happy to be a backup and will be ready for spot duty after a year or two.

I mentioned the basketball game because he had posted on Instagram (since deleted) a photo of Urban, Fields, and Haskins courtside being displayed on the scoreboard at the Schott on Jan 5, taken from Tate's general admission seat in the 20th row.

It was the following day that this all blew up.

He was (presumably) fine competing with a transfer -- who also has issues if you watched Season 2 of QB1 on Netflix. He was not fine with Urban rubbing his nose in it and courting the competition. At that point competing was off the table; he wanted out, even if he had to sit a year.

In his view, Urban/Ohio State did him dirty. He wasn't even going to share a QB room with Fields after that. He was done. At least that's my read on it.

I disagree. This was a kid who tried to sh*t talk Nick Starkle into decommitting, after they got a new OC then said “he’d start as a freshman anyways”, then he didn’t decommit.. Tate decommitted... talking to an aggy friend, Tathan has everything handed to him...

how did we LET him walk... its his choice, he chose to not even try to compete for a job in the spring, he chose to talk smack in the media/social media then walk away, based on what I posted above its seems to be his MO...

Handling people is a skill.
Maybe we'll find out Day did everything to assure him and keep him in the fold and Tate just took everything way too personally.
But there's also a lot of smoke that Fields was annointed coming in and Tate left to assume the worst until there was no turning back.

So you’d have preferred us say “Tate you’re the starter no matter what?” just to keep him from walking prematurely?

because thats the only way he was staying.. He felt entitled to the job, didn’t think he had to earn it. Oh that and we agree to not take any transfer QBs.. like Fields

I dont know what was said. But looking in definitely doesnt look like there was going to be much of a competition... Fields didnt come here to sit.
And i dont have a problem with that.
Haskins was a foregone conclusion... Urban still managed to manage/set expectations with Burrow. Granted, as you say, Burrow is more mature himself and made that a lot easier.
But it doesnt change the reality. We're waiting on NCAA to flip a coin on Fields, a 2nd year guy in Baldwin, and a grad xfer Chuganov that i appreciate being here... but hope never sees the field.
So yes, I'd say between losing Mathis and completely failing to walk Tate off the ledge... the situation is less than ideal.

This is why I don't think Day should go after another transfer to get another QB in the room. At this point he needs to try to stabilize the QB room with someone who will be with the team long term. Going after another guy like Chuganov just sets the QB depth to be thin again. Teams need guys like Cardale, Guiton, and Todd Boeckman.

I doubt Fields came here to "compete" for the job. There are plenty of places that would've made him their starter immediately so I find it far more likely that there wasn't going to be a competition.

Martell didn't sign on to play for Day and sit behind Fields, so he's leaving. I don't think that's unreasonable.

Tathan lawyers up

But according to another source — this one close to the Martell family — he has "a better shot than you'd think."
Early indications are that Martell will try to use Ohio State's sudden coaching change, from Urban Meyer to Ryan Day, as grounds to be immediately eligible.

Obviously, if Martell can expedite his graduation at Ohio State by summertime, he'd be clear to play immediately at Miami.
