QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Outside looking in, feels this was mishandled by staff... but i think he was gone after Spring anyway...
...there's...a lot of smoke that Fields was anointed coming in and Tate left to assume the worst until there was no turning back.
I don't know what was said. But looking in definitely doesn't look like there was going to be much of a competition... Fields didn't come here to sit. And i don't have a problem with that...
I'm not sure I understand, then, what you view as the likely mishandling of the situation. I think you are speculating that Day gave Fields some kind of assurance to get him to come to OSU; i.e. he told Fields that if Fields transferred to OSU, Fields would probably or almost certainly be the starting quarterback. Speculative, but plausible. Do you think Day shouldn't have told Fields that?

Or do you think that Day should have told Fields that he'd probably be the starter, but should have told Martell something different in order to keep him around?

Or is it mainly the basketball seating with Meyer and Haskins that you view as the mishandling?

Martell didn't sign on to play for Day and sit behind Fields, so he's leaving. I don't think that's unreasonable.
And Joe Burrow didn’t sign on to play behind Haskins.

Burrow handled his business in a way that (as far as I could see) was almost universally accepted if not respected.

Martell did not.

The mere act of transferring is not what the agitation is about in this situation.

Yeah, nothing will make me root for Cryami, now or ever. But I hope he has a good career. These things happen, it’s what makes situations like Kenny G all the more inspiring.
(And yes, now that I called him Kenny G I know “Songbird” is going through your head...don’t fight it)

This is why I don't think Day should go after another transfer to get another QB in the room. At this point he needs to try to stabilize the QB room with someone who will be with the team long term. Going after another guy like Chuganov just sets the QB depth to be thin again. Teams need guys like Cardale, Guiton, and Todd Boeckman.

I dont know that there's anyone like that left.
And we got a stud coming in 2020. This is going to be a recurring problem, though... QBs want their shot to play.
Means you have to recruit one every year; maybe trying to alternate between journeyman/bluechip.
Also means your scouting has to be on point.
Losing Mathis hurt. He and Baldwin would have competed to be the guy after Fields... with the loser likely transferring. But by then we'd have 2020 and 2021 recruits...

The mishandling is that we're still down to 3 QBs... 1 of whom is waiting on ever fickle NCAA, a rs frosh, and a suspect grad xfer.
Rather than talking Tate down and trying to sell him on a legit competition we got Haskins and Urban with Fields sitting courtside.
What was said to calm him down after the twitter tirades ? Anything ?
If we finish Mathis this isnt a problem either...

I've got a lot of mixed emotions about the entire situation.

While I think that TM is likely a very, very good athlete and competitor, I'm not convinced that he was well cut out for B1G football. I'm sure he'd be exciting as anything to watch, but I also guess that every play would be boom or bust. I've thought that from day one, but in interest of keeping things positive or taking a wait and see approach, I've kept a sock in it on that point... so to speak.

QB1 was an interesting watch. I'm quite certain there was a lot of editing of film to fit a narrative the producers wanted to create. So, on that point, it's hard to tell if this is confirmation bias creeping in, but after considering what I saw in QB1 there's nothing here that surprises me... well, perhaps nothing aside from the fact that TM stuck with the team as long as he did. I suspect that he was willing to sit for only so long...

I feel bad that he was not able to fulfill his dreams at tOSU. But, I also understand that it's a very good thing to move on from a situation that is not a good fit. We've only got one spin across this planet... and you've got to do what you think is right to make it count. Either way, I liken this to any time I've changed jobs in my career. Motivation for change can come from many sources and who am I to question what he (and presumably his family) think is the right thing for him. Clearly, there's plenty of writing on the wall that tOSU is likely not a good fit for him if he wants to be QB1 -- be it a change in coaching / offensive design or anything else.

It was interesting to watch how the story played out in the media -- social and otherwise. Going back to the QB1 thing, and TM's history in the Twittersphere, I'm frankly pleased it didn't play out any more caustic than it did. There's no doubting that TM has no desire to share the QB room with another competitive talent he perceives to be in his class or following him. Truth be told, I'm guessing that most QBs may feel the same way, regardless of their public face. That said, with the fact that the QB controversy and potential downside impact on team chemistry is no longer an issue, I am most gratefully relieved. The locker room was frankly a greater concern to me than whoever is slotted into QB1.

I do think that transferring prior to graduating, on the surface, is potentially a horrible move. That said, I have no idea how close he is to getting across that goal line. If he's close, as other's have said, it's a bad move. If he's close, he should pull up his big-boy shorts and tough out a final semester... heck, include first session of summer in there if it gets him eligible. If he's not even close to being done, it's probably not a bad move to get to South Beach and start a new life. If I had to put money on it, my guess is that he's further away from graduating than what even spring plus a summer might get him. I don't begrudge this or him at all -- especially in light of the fact that he likely feels like he got jobbed.

Miami? Yeah, OK... Again, his call... and at least it ain't tsun. But whatevs... Not going to say it because it's already been alluded to... but wowza. Hope he keeps his eyes on the prize of being QB1 down there and doesn't get distracted.

Best of luck to him anytime he's not on the field playing tOSU... or LSU while Joey is there, I guess.

At this point I think Day needs to find a 3 star with some upside. Maybe an Ohio kid that it's their dream to play at Ohio State. I think there are still some out there. There usually is a huge difference between the preferred walk on and the 3 star scholarship QB.
