I've got a lot of mixed emotions about the entire situation.
While I think that TM is likely a very, very good athlete and competitor, I'm not convinced that he was well cut out for B1G football. I'm sure he'd be exciting as anything to watch, but I also guess that every play would be boom or bust. I've thought that from day one, but in interest of keeping things positive or taking a wait and see approach, I've kept a sock in it on that point... so to speak.
QB1 was an interesting watch. I'm quite certain there was a lot of editing of film to fit a narrative the producers wanted to create. So, on that point, it's hard to tell if this is confirmation bias creeping in, but after considering what I saw in QB1 there's nothing here that surprises me... well, perhaps nothing aside from the fact that TM stuck with the team as long as he did. I suspect that he was willing to sit for only so long...
I feel bad that he was not able to fulfill his dreams at tOSU. But, I also understand that it's a very good thing to move on from a situation that is not a good fit. We've only got one spin across this planet... and you've got to do what you think is right to make it count. Either way, I liken this to any time I've changed jobs in my career. Motivation for change can come from many sources and who am I to question what he (and presumably his family) think is the right thing for him. Clearly, there's plenty of writing on the wall that tOSU is likely not a good fit for him if he wants to be QB1 -- be it a change in coaching / offensive design or anything else.
It was interesting to watch how the story played out in the media -- social and otherwise. Going back to the QB1 thing, and TM's history in the Twittersphere, I'm frankly pleased it didn't play out any more caustic than it did. There's no doubting that TM has no desire to share the QB room with another competitive talent he perceives to be in his class or following him. Truth be told, I'm guessing that most QBs may feel the same way, regardless of their public face. That said, with the fact that the QB controversy and potential downside impact on team chemistry is no longer an issue, I am most gratefully relieved. The locker room was frankly a greater concern to me than whoever is slotted into QB1.
I do think that transferring prior to graduating, on the surface, is potentially a horrible move. That said, I have no idea how close he is to getting across that goal line. If he's close, as other's have said, it's a bad move. If he's close, he should pull up his big-boy shorts and tough out a final semester... heck, include first session of summer in there if it gets him eligible. If he's not even close to being done, it's probably not a bad move to get to South Beach and start a new life. If I had to put money on it, my guess is that he's further away from graduating than what even spring plus a summer might get him. I don't begrudge this or him at all -- especially in light of the fact that he likely feels like he got jobbed.
Miami? Yeah, OK... Again, his call... and at least it ain't tsun. But whatevs... Not going to say it because it's already been alluded to... but wowza. Hope he keeps his eyes on the prize of being QB1 down there and doesn't get distracted.
Best of luck to him anytime he's not on the field playing tOSU... or LSU while Joey is there, I guess.
