QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Yeah I agree with this. All his actions just sounded like a guy that just wanted someone from the staff to reassure him that he was going to get a fair shot at getting the job. Who know if that ever came but I don't think he would have been running his mouth then doing all this Twitter/instagram stuff if it had.

for all we know he was already behind Baldwin.

Fields being recruited doesn't equal Tate being treated poorly in any capacity. I can see why the basketball game thing might have pissed him off and that's the extent of it. I would also think that someone that ran his mouth publicly like he did and is interested in being QB1 somewhere like Ohio State would want to beat out Fields and shove that shit back in everyones faces.

Take away the shit talking and the optics are different, but unless Ryan Day did something totally idiotic like tell him that either Fields or Baldwin are definitely going to start next year and he should pack his bags, I don't see any details here that don't make Tate look like an entitled nancy that can't back up his itchy Twitter fingers.

I don't understand the "OSU did him dirty" narrative at all. You aren't entitled to anything on this level just because you put in time. Certainly loyalty does play into closer calls but all they did was enhance the team by bringing in Fields. They didn't tell Tate to hit the bricks or trash him in the media. The guy had a chance to compete for the job and if he lost he was still a snap away from being the starter. Instead he is going to sit out a year and not even try even after all the bluster. I feel like he either way overreacted by letting his ego get the best of him or something else was going on behind the scenes. Transferring for an immediate start made sense, but sitting out next season reduces his chances of ever starting in some ways. Miami didn't hand him a signed contract saying he would start either and a lot can happen in a year.

I have no doubt that if he or anyone else was an asset to the team they would have handled the situation with a reasonable level of care that would seem adequate to reasonable people. For all we know they bent over backwards trying to calm him down but he was letting his pride get the best of him.

While we are wildly speculating it is just as possible that it could cut the other way too. Perhaps there was conflict or issues brewing before the Fields transfer that had them feeling like Tate could be a liability in some way so they didn't go out of their way to keep him from looking elsewhere. If that were true then they still handled it well by not airing that stuff in public. No indication of that, but again no indication of OSU doing him dirty.

I admit the basketball outting raised my eyebrow from an optics thing, but for all we know UM invited Haskins and Haskins brought him as his +1. It was not a QB gathering or a team event, it was a social outting. I would be miffed too if I was Tate only because I wanted to be there like every other person on the roster would, but I would also be reflecting on if my own decisions may had affected me not sitting there also because UM does not like conflict and surely not in his leisure time.

End of day we really don't know, but I've seen nothing that indicates OSU did anything other than try to enhance the team by saying "the best person wins the position"

If I were in Day's shoes I can tell you I would not be pleased with the way Tate handled himself and unless I was between a rock and hard a place or I felt like Tate was going to be a big key to our success it would sour things for me because it creates drama that gets fueled by the public and could likely last all season long and create divides in the team.

All in all I wish Tate would stayed and competed and graduated and then transfer if it didn't work out. I feel his actions caused that ship to sail though, either because it put him in a more difficult situation and/or the staff.

Probably be the starting QB for LVCC in a couple years. Kind of funny to throw shade at Fields for looking at tOSU and then leaving without even fighting for the job. Doesn't say much for his character. Seems like it would have been a better use of his time to stick around for another semester or 2, graduate, and then transfer without sitting out a year. I don't see how he gets a waiver to play next year.

Disappointing outcome. I don’t think we’ll get the full story so I’ll try to remain Switzerland on this event. Tate seems to need a lot of reassurance (like a lot of humans) and at this point it may be best for the program that there is closure. We’ve got a few weeks to at least go to work on considering an emergency option in recruiting and evaluate the grad transfer pool.

Best of luck to Tathan at Miami and keep that turnover chain of your neck...

I’m really happy for Tate, he didn’t deserve what happened at OSU. Kinda a reminder to us how this is a business and love isn’t permanent. Miami will be great for him, he’ll love it in the 305, has a team with tradition, two of his good friends already there and not playing in a shithole like Morgantown. Good move.
I always expected Martell to transfer and although I think he went about it in a less than ideal way and I think Miami is a questionable destination (see below), I still don’t really care. But are we really going to pretend like Miami hasn’t been a football dumpster fire for over a decade?

It definitely makes it more confusing that he is transferring if he is giving up that year of eligibility. He could spend 3 semesters and 2 summers to get on track to graduate and be in the exact same position at a new school. In that time he could be the starting QB at Ohio State if something happens.
I’m sure a year of knowing you’re not going to play a snap of football in South Beach with your HS friends (after just turning 21) will result in him being in peak preparedness to compete for the starting spot in 2020.

Outside looking in, feels this was mishandled by staff... but i think he was gone after Spring anyway.
Learning moment for Day, hopefully.
Destination seems very questionable and he has to sit a 3rd year now before competing for a QB job... but i guess its personal for him. Enjoy the beaches, Tate.

How so? By going out and getting a consensus top 3-5 QB?
