QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

I think it’s 5 years to play 4, regardless, unless there’s some high circumstance injury waiver.

Found this on a college's website. "While you do not lose a year of eligibility athletically, all student-athletes who transfer are required to sit out for one full sports season of competition. You are allowed to attend practices and games, but you cannot participate until that year is over."

So I guess he will have his 3 years still.

It seems super risky to transfer to a school and sit out a year especially as a QB. Who knows what happens in that year and it's a single person job. He keeps his extra year of eligibility but hopefully he finds a way to get a waiver.

Surprise he just didn't take the chance to see if he could win the job in spring ball if he has to sit out a year.
Especially if Jarren Williams doesn’t transfer

Thats only if you haven’t red shirted...it’s 5 to play 4 etc with injury. He’ll have 2 years left to play unless they get a waiver

I'd defer to the NCAA before "a college". You get five year to play four. He's had two years already, one in which he did not participate (redshirt) and one where he did. He now has three years of eligibility. Since he has not graduated he cannot use the graduate-transfer rule which would allow him to play immediately this season, and so he loses one of his remaining three years. Which to me makes his decision confusing--he thinks he may not get to play this year because of Fields and he does something which keeps him from playing this season and blowing a year of eligibility.

It definitely makes it more confusing that he is transferring if he is giving up that year of eligibility. He could spend 3 semesters and 2 summers to get on track to graduate and be in the exact same position at a new school. In that time he could be the starting QB at Ohio State if something happens.

I’m really happy for Tate, he didn’t deserve what happened at OSU. Kinda a reminder to us how this is a business and love isn’t permanent. Miami will be great for him, he’ll love it in the 305, has a team with tradition, two of his good friends already there and not playing in a shithole like Morgantown. Good move.

What exactly didn't he deserve here?

I mentioned the basketball game because he had posted on Instagram (since deleted) a photo of Urban, Fields, and Haskins courtside being displayed on the scoreboard at the Schott on Jan 5, taken from Tate's general admission seat in the 20th row.

It was the following day that this all blew up.

He was (presumably) fine competing with a transfer -- who also has issues if you watched Season 2 of QB1 on Netflix. He was not fine with Urban rubbing his nose in it and courting the competition. At that point competing was off the table; he wanted out, even if he had to sit a year.

In his view, Urban/Ohio State did him dirty. He wasn't even going to share a QB room with Fields after that. He was done. At least that's my read on it.

Getting treated like chopped liver the second Fields got to OSU. That basketball game was pretty telling, Fields with Haskins and UM court side. I don’t think he was given a fair shake. Don’t get me wrong, I pick Fields as my QB everyday. It just feels like a sad deal for Tate. He certainly put the time, work and loyalty into being the QB for OSU. But it’s big business and tough decisions need to be made. Tate transferring at this point of the year seems like it was personal to him.

Was that before or after Fields officially decided he was transferring here? If it was before, that's called recruiting and it's done everywhere. Even if it was after, I don't know why that matters. Urban isn't the coach anymore, Day is. I don't know what happened behind close doors, and neither do you, but Day said he would give everyone a fair shot to compete. My perception is that Tate talked a big game and then tucked his tail between his legs and ran instead of competing.

I can see that pov but Baldwin wasn't there either and he didn't make a fuss. I see it as an old coach welcoming/recruiting (depending on the timing of events) a new player to the school. I see no reason to believe Day or Urban would intentionally slight Tate

Yeah I agree with this. All his actions just sounded like a guy that just wanted someone from the staff to reassure him that he was going to get a fair shot at getting the job. Who know if that ever came but I don't think he would have been running his mouth then doing all this Twitter/instagram stuff if it had.

Doesn't really matter if the slight was intentional, unintentional, or whatever. All that matters is how Tate perceived the scene.

Obviously some of his comments don't make him blameless here, but I'm not surprised he'd be super fucking pissed about it.

While I’m sure Baldwin will be great, but he wasn’t the highly touted, high school player of the year, “national high school champion” QB that was perceived by most to be the heir of the QB throne. Other than hearing some positive “talk” about Baldwin, he hasn’t done anything yet to feel offended.

Also there are reports that Urban and Day had to talk Tate out of transferring before the start of the season. Who knows what they said to get him to stay but maybe he saw some promises getting broken after Fields transferred.
