QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

All QBs are going to miss throws, just seems to me a number of completions were beyond the mean.
(Did I say thay right @DaddyBigBucks ?)
Kyle’s numbers were helped immensely by the huge catch radius of each of his receivers. I expect that at Kyle’s next destination, his father will complain that he’s getting no help from his wideouts. One wonders how many quarterbacks would have Kyle’s numbers if they had Kyle’s receivers.

If what we’ve heard about Kyle’s father is true, then McCord Senior deserves every ounce of criticism we send his way. His (reported) constant complaining about Kyle’s circumstances put the responsibility for Kyle’s performance everywhere BUT on Kyle. While Kyle is ultimately responsible for the advice that he allows in, one wonders how many college quarterbacks would have ever learned accountability with a father like that.

My final thought on Kyle is simply that it was not his fault that he was Ohio State’s best option at QB this year. He took it seriously and worked hard.

My final thoughts on his departure are that I hope it wasn’t due to drama in the locker room. I don’t even care what kind of drama, whether it was people blaming him for the loss or an “everyone’s girlfriend sleeps with other people“ situation. If it was locker room drama, you can bet that the cancer is still there. Disclaimer: I am no one, I have no inside knowledge, this is by my own admission the worst kind of message board speculation

Not gonna lie, the "daddy ball" undertones smell pretty funny here

How do we know that he was not "encouraged" to go?

Why would you tell a good QB to just leave?
You open up the competition and pray to have an experienced backup as long as possible if a better guy steps up.
I don't see Kyle as the "toxic" type you want to push out. I doubt he's ever the starter if that was the case.

Except for the turnovers, those are solid numbers.

That's a pretty big except.

The problem for me was, and I hate to just say this stuff without hard numbers but I'm sure there's some kind of conversion rate on 2 from 10+ or something like that. Or % of plays that result in 1st downs over 7 yards.

The point is, the eye test to me was that we we really struggled behind schedule. And I realize most teams do, but in Ryan Day land, struggling to move the chains is a distraction to getting explosive plays. (puts the defense in easier spots. Etc)

Further, I know the 11w dudes break down all the pass charts etc, and I don't read all that stuff but my guess is he's decidedly pedestrian past 10 yards and the playmakers are way above average at YAC.
Both eye-test metrics are what come to my mind when I think about deficiencies: plays at the sticks behind schedule and accuracy downfield. I felt like the body language of the recievers after some of those misses said it all. I also think that sort of stuff gets in their heads and creates hesitency going up for a ball over the middle--wondering if they're getting served up like a lamb to the slaughter.

To me, it comes down to he doesn't really have a strength. He's definitely not great at quick processing and getting the ball out quickly and accurately on short and intermediate routes. I'm a 49er fan and this is what Brock Purdy is really good at. There were at least 3 plays in The Game where he threw absolutely terrible balls on these that would have moved the chains. He's OK on deep balls, but nowhere near a guy like Fields on deep shots. He's obviously not mobile at all, either in the pocket or as a runner. So...what are you left with?

I think you nailed it. Hes average across the board. There are qualities that past QBs had 1-2 of that made them electric:

- Leadership/toughness: Barrett, Braxton
- Deep ball: Haskins, 12-Guage
- Mobility: Fields, Braxton
- Accuracy: Stroud, Fields

Kyle simply just doesn’t posses enough of these things at a top tier level. I do think with a slower game and less pressure/demands he will come along.

Thump, you can be encouraged, but not saying the words. In corporate life, it's called the 'corporate stiletto'. Inviting you to a meeting, asking your opinion, and then noting that was covered in the last meeting. Moving your desk to the lounge area, finding yourself left off the memo list. Just telling Kyle that it would be an open competition for the position he held all year is a in-your-face form of that. Maybe in this day and age, telling a guy that his NIL money is being cut (?) is the same. Dunno, but appears the message was loud and clear. Also note, that a coach under pressure, may cave to the masses in order to keep their job one more year. Yeah, I too, would liked to have been a fly on the wall. We'll see if LJsr moves on for mayhaps the same reasons.....Go Bucks!

I think @calibuck is probably right on target with the "corporate stilleto" analysis. I think Kyle was told the QB position battle would be open moving forward (including that Brown/LK would play in the bowl game) and as cali said, I can Kyle being insulted by that after starting all year and having pretty good numbers on paper. I think the preference would have been for Kyle to stay and fight for the job (or at least my preference), but I don't really blame Kyle for reading that as the writing on the wall.

I doubt he just immediately enters the portal after being assured he has the starting job locked up next year. But who the hell knows, maybe it was a personality conflict with Kyle and Day (or his family) and both sides said lets cut ties. You saw Day ripping into Kyle on the sidelines a lot and sometimes I think he needed that hard coaching, but maybe it wasn't well received by Kyle and/or his family.
