QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

Considering he presents absolutely no threat with his legs whatsoever, it isn't exactly "good"

We went from arguably the best offense in CFB every year Day has been here to just an above average one this year. It's not hard to see why.
Hmmmm, breaking in a new offensive line, left tackle a transfer, right tackle, and the center were rookies, the one consistent blocking tight end was injured and his replacement used the 'Ole!' method. The running game didn't come around until Henderson came back. The punter couldn't flip the field. The special teams weren't special. The #2 wide receiver was gone most of the season and didn't show much when he came back. Fleming didn't explode like I thought he would, best blocking back went out at mid season, a crucial kick went off the goal post. For much of the season, the offense was McCord to Harrison.

All those negatives would have been reduced to a degree by a running QB and, alas, McCord was not. Given all this, going 11 - 1 is a hell of an accomplishment.

He had plenty of help. More than most. And certainly more than CJ Stroud had.

This. My chats with Steve Bellisari and the toxic climate (at that moment) at the site where I got started posting were major drivers in BP’s birth. I wanted a place that didn’t depress players, and didn’t drive recruits away. Over the years we’ve had players reach out at the end of their college careers literally expressing gratitude for being a place they felt comfortable sending their families

Mangold’s dad was a regular here (and I only say that because he chose to be open), we’ve had players and their family members come and go. We don’t take those people as novelties, we don’t leverage those connections to stoke our own egos (no one here ever hid in a bush stalking players or setting their daughter up with them while offering live updates from private rooms — old crew will get that reference). We simply choose to be a place where we’d be comfortable with a player’s mom reading what we write. Doesn’t mean we can’t be critical, but it should be thoughtful, fair, and remember that (paid or not) these are still kids.

Respect. Plain and simple.

Look, I don’t own or operate the site anymore. But those who do are people who have been here all along. I feel very comfortable saying that the “BP way” when it comes to respect for players, coaches, and their families should never change.

And I’m going to challenge everyone and say that if there’s something that injuries that philosophy to the point you want to stay away from the site — rather than go, shut it down and defend/protect what we’ve created here.
I don't think anyone who has been here (on BP) for a while or truly respects Ohio State football would attack the character or personal lives of a player unless 1) It is confirmed public knowledge AND 2) it relates to the play on the field. This is why I prefer to visit and comment on this site as opposed to the other OSU fan sites because I see that level of civility displayed here. Some posts may get spicy, but its never what I see on rivals or 11W.....

But back to Kyle. I appreciate his time at OSU, he did ok, but it's not good enough to get where we all want to get back to (dominating TSUN on a regular basis + winning Conference titles and NCs). I think this move will be beneficial for both parties. Kyle gets to be in a less stressful environment with a fresh start because let's be honest, if he didn't come out looking like Joe Borrow year 2 at LSU from the jump, we were all going to be calling for his head and even probably Day's (as much as I think he's the right coach for OSU, I don't think he's here after next year if we don't beat TSUN and/or win an NC). I think this is also the move we needed to make for the QB position among with other players that have went in the portal. We have a lot of upperclassmen/draft eligible players who have either underachieved or not achieved at all for various reasons. Couple that with not winning anything of signifigence in three years and I'm willing to get some new blood in here. Outside of a few spots (RB, DL, and CB), I'm ready to roll with the highly rated underclassmen we have and some transfers. Let's see if these top 5 classes we've been stacking and all these highly paid coaches are legit.

And we should probably pin this post to the top of every forum. I will admit that when I started here, I was more emotional and prone to crossing the line occasionally in big moments...but I was also 12 then, so brain development and an inability to control my newfound testosterone helped quite a bit in my case. But especially after I wrote for The Lantern and became friends with many of the players at OSU, I could see the toll it could take on players and it made it pretty easy to see the line between honest criticism and disrespect.

For those who cross that line, I still believe we do a great job on making sure they are the ones to hit the road or get timeout rather than other options. That is largely because those who started this site created that culture and after it was instilled, the others and younger guys like me who treated it as a standard. I don't even really go to other sites boards and haven't for awhile.

As to Kyle, I think everyone here was good about pointing out weaknesses but appreciating his accomplishments and effort. On all the other sites and social media posts there was some really hateful stuff out there, though in this age you don't even know if they are real Buckeye fans posting that stuff.

Kinda torn myself in terms of how it impacts the team, I tend to think one of Brown or LK is better suited for next years team but you don't know what is behind the other doors until they hit the field on the big stage. I do think Kyle will have success somewhere, I just hope it is not in our conference tbh. He did everything he could at OSU and was a good representative of our team and university, so I truly want him to find that success somewhere.

I think the people acting like the turnovers are the cause of this are being too reductive. The turnovers are obviously bad but in every game there were multiple plays where a receiver was running wide open and McCord either didn’t see him or just decided not to throw the ball for whatever reason. THAT’S why Day isn’t sticking with him.

You can live with turnovers or sailing some balls due to an injured ankle if the guy is at least properly identifying open receivers.

The stuff McCord was failing at is largely intuitive and if he doesn’t have it now after three years in the program, he’s not just suddenly going to develop it.

Constantly being late on balls early in the season can be excused as a timing issue and just getting used to your receivers moving in full speed with full contact defenders.

Doing it repeatedly in your 13th start, three years into the program is a problem that’s likely not going to be fixed by the extent it needs to in order to start at Ohio State.
Besides having 2 turnovers in The Game, Kyle completed 60% of his passes and got 270 yards on 30 attempts, or 9 yards per attempt, on the road against the #1 defense in the nation.

Except for the turnovers, those are solid numbers.

I think he was solid all year but not elite. Yes, he had good numbers but he left a lot of points on the board in every game and never put together a complete game outside of Mich st. I don’t think the game ever slowed down for him and unfortunately I think he may of peaked at ND. Statistics can often be misleading as I can bet no one watched a game this year and came away impressed by any of his performances (outside of the aforementioned mich st who was horrible this year). I really don’t want to pile on the kid, but there’s a reason why Day wouldn’t commit to him being the starter in ‘24 and on Sunday, before the transfer, we were all fine with that for the most part.

They are. But they also don’t tell a full story. If he’s leaving 80-120 yards a game on the table by missing wide open guys, that’s a problem.

I think he’s a fine QB. Just not good enough for a National Championship caliber program.

I don't even hold the second one against him. It was desperation time. He couldn't take a sack and had to let it go, trying to go 80 yards in a minute with no time outs. Two nights ago Mahomes was in the same situation and he couldn't pull it off, either.

The first one was, obviously, very costly.

I'd be interested (not enough to do the work, lol) in how many yards (and scores) were left on the field. I don't look at the all 22 but I know he missed WIDE open guys because he was locked on to ... usual Marv... sometimes Cade.... maybe those instances seem amplified in my memory. I don't know.

The problem for me was, and I hate to just say this stuff without hard numbers but I'm sure there's some kind of conversion rate on 2 from 10+ or something like that. Or % of plays that result in 1st downs over 7 yards.

The point is, the eye test to me was that we we really struggled behind schedule. And I realize most teams do, but in Ryan Day land, struggling to move the chains is a distraction to getting explosive plays. (puts the defense in easier spots. Etc)

Further, I know the 11w dudes break down all the pass charts etc, and I don't read all that stuff but my guess is he's decidedly pedestrian past 10 yards and the playmakers are way above average at YAC.

Add on to this, some completions that should have been hit in stride. I can think of at least 1 Fleming catch that should have been six. Fleming ended up making a "great catch" (to his credit, it was)

All QBs are going to miss throws, just seems to me a number of completions were beyond the mean.
(Did I say thay right @DaddyBigBucks ?)
