QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips)

It may effect his radio show and thus his pocket book, if the sponsers realize no one is listening anymore.

It will effect his ability to get inside info, talk to the players, coaches, etc. Nobody is going to give him the time of day anymore.

If he truly has a place in his heart for tOSU and it's football program, the intense rejection from fans, players and coaches could impact him personally.

It could impact his national persona when everybody realizes that his Alma Mater doesn't want to have anything to do with him.

:osu:
except people don't stop listening if they hate the person talking.....sometimes they listen more.

Why wouldn't he want to be liked by his alma mater..? I fail to see your point here.

Unless he legitimately doesn't like OSU anymore, I can't see a reason.

If you don't care about Ohio State then it shouldn't matter one iota.

Personally, I don't think it matters to him one iota.

I'm with Jax.

Unless Herbie has the same HPD that LeBron does, he CAN'T be stupid enough to believe that he can do what he's done and still have any semblance of respect from THE Ohio State or its fans. In the end he's getting paid either way, so why would he care?

The bolded sentence doesn't really seem to fit with the rest of your post. I also agree with what Jax said. But he could easily get paid without being biased against his alma mater/bad at commentary. He used to do it.

But Jax's post sums up how I feel about this situation entirely, so if we both agree with that post, we're on the same page.

Herbie HAS to know he's burned too many bridges to ever be beloved in Columbus anymore but he's still getting paid, so in the end there's no reason for him to care. Maybe that's a better way to put it.

See, I'm not sure if he COULD get paid without it. I was once a Herbie apologist, so I've seen the evolution. He sounds like a pullstring doll nowadays. I can only imagine that's the product of the folks signing the checks. But like Jax said, I don't think it matters to him anymore.

Let's review this one more time:
People on The Ohio State University payroll: Jim Tressell, E. Gordon Gee, Archie Griffin, A large number of Professors and Administrators, secretaries, clerks, cops, maintenance, public relations food service and janitorial personnel.

People on ESPN's payroll: Mark May, Jesse Palmer, Lou Holtz, Jim Herbstreit and others.

Herbstreit is not paid to fondle Ohio State or to be a hack for them.

You may not like that. You may think he has an obligation to ALWAYS speak highly of his alma mater, but until the school pays his salary and tells him what his job requires him to say he is free to draw his own conclusions.

How difficult is that to understand?

I'm sure he's pulling strings, but I feel like he's pulling them harder than he needs to. Dropping OSU to 9 reeks of stupidity in all of college football, not just Ohio. He gets blasted on Twitter whenever he's working a game. I think his image is getting worse everywhere, not just in Columbus.

Either way, we're pretty much in agreement here so I'm just going to shut up. :tongue2:

Him dropping OSU to 9 really doesn't have anything to do with OSU (I know this sentence doesn't make sense, but you'll see my point I hope). It could be any school and a different person's vote and I'd call that move stupid beyond words. It's not that he isn't fondling OSU that's the problem. It's just that he's being really stupid about it. The team and school (Gee's comments - even though I agree with them) have given the media plenty to criticize. He's just not doing it intelligently.

That's my issue, anyways. His actions are stupid to the point of not being defensible. I'd be saying this if it were someone who didn't go to OSU.

I can sum up my thoughts on Herbie more clearly than this.

He's turning into Mark May. He's becoming a guy who throws all logic out the window and garbage just flows from his mouth at all times, and it doesn't make sense.

Buckeyes hate Mark May, so they're going to hate someone similar to him as well.

I hope I don't get banned for Buckeye bashing. I just called one Mark May. :(

Cinci, I've never been a Herbie basher...borderline apologist at times. However, are you honestly saying you don't see any difference in how he handled Cam Newton and the Tat-5? Are you defending his "addition by subtraction" comments?

Here is a fact for you that I cannot provide a link or connection...Herbie and JT do not care for one another. Herbie LOVED Dave Kennedy. JT did not appreciate news being leaked from his program. JT fired Kennedy.

You can hold your opinion...I did for a long time. However, recently, I don't have much defense for such blatant actions.

He doesn't have an obligation to always speak highly of Ohio State. I do think he has an obligation to be fair toward them though - and toward any other team he covers for that matter. I don't think he's living up to that standard, and that's why he's taking so much shit over the last few weeks.

We do not have to like him and have the right to say so. We have the right to think that he sold out his Alma Mater and have a right to say so.

How difficult is that to understand?
