I think it would get under our skin less if people didn't misinterpret these entertainment show "reports" as news.

Yep. The curse of the blogs, and the news as entertainment dive we've been free falling in for a decade has fucked up what integrity there was in the "straight" news. With papers folding left and right, the pure "journalist" is a vanishing species.

My $.02:

I hate it when game announcers distract from the game by talking about off-field issues or headlines that have no relevancy on the game. If Boise State is playing Utah, talk about Boise State and Utah. Talk about the game first, then the respective universities after. Respect those programs enough not to derail it with other bullshit.

As to the substance of what he said, I didn't hear it first hand. But from second-hand sources, it seems like its becoming venomous between a professional and an amateur. A 40-something year old and a 21-year-old. And a 40-something year-old who's very job is to profit off of the game of this and other 21-year-olds by discussing their games and stories. Because of that, I think the 40-something-year-old ought to be slightly more mature about the issue.

But I don't have a very strong opinion on this because I didn't watch it. I'm really disinterested by the ESPN commentary and do my best to avoid that channel unless a game is on. I don't always do it, but I find their non-live sports programming to be lacking in informative and rational thought.

i dont disagree, yet im not sure that the demarcation of "innocent" and "guilty" have been drawn. one may wonder if more is to come?

secondly herbie only mentioned it upon brents request of the stories coming out of columbus, he kept what he said limited to what the nbc/cbs/abc/fox news stations were reporting, along with the local paper (dispatch) and radio (espn, am stations, etc) were reporting. could he have been more selective with names? maybe. but im pretty sure no one is talking about chris fields today...

True enough, but he just as easily could have said something to the effect of, "Yeah, sounds like there's some smoke over there in Columbus. We should wait to see how it all turns out before speculating..."

I hear you man, but that is not so much my opinion of the standard, as what I understand the standard is throughout the country. I would love to hear from some jouralism grads about the propriety of what Herbie did citing names, getting his info from other sources.

As a parent - and as a rabid fan of a college program - I can appreciate the "NFBuck standard". But I have to think that you getting mad at a person whose job description falls within the ambit of "sports news" - all because he followed industry standards on reporting breaking stories - won't get much traction.

If you could not print a story until you had it all worked out and 100% verified, then Nixon would have served his second term out.

McCarthy had a list too...how does everyone view that now? I have to agree that the place I draw the line is mentioning names when there is no proof they did anything wrong, and of course it turns out some of them are now slandered for absolutely no reason. And I even disagree with NF a bit in the assessment that he needed to be a Buckeye to do that...He could have said "a major scandal brewing with several key offensive players possibly involved, even facing suspensions" and it would have been PLENTY juicy for his ESPN Wonkdom...he just chose to throw the names out there voluntarily, well, just because he...wanted to sound important? In the know in Columbus? I have no idea...I don't have a problem mentioning it, or hell even sensationalizing it...but if I was one of those kids whose futures could be affected by being personally tainted by a scandal I didn't take part in, I'd be plenty pissed off...if I didn't have a lawyer.

Not saying I disagree with you or NFbuck or Bill or any of you on the suckiness of naming names of guys who were not involved. Like the Camgate stuff, me pointing out the rules does not mean that I endorse or defend the rule, or that I even like it. I just was pointing out that he was well within the ethical rules of anyone reporting sports news. But since I was not a journalism major, I'd still like to hear from someone who majored in journalism for their take on it.

No he wasn't. It's not ethical to take names off of a blog (who got the names by looking at images of people with tattoos) and announce those names on national TV.

(Going to preface this by saying that I'm in agreement with you)

I like Herbie for what he does for the most part. I'm not sure if he considers himself as a journalist. But I don't consider him one, because he has never shown any type of journalistic integrity whatsoever. I just finished with my major courses in journalism at OSU, and he has literally never shown any ounce of journalistic integrity. You don't report false info, and if you do, you issue a correction. You don't show bias (one way or the other). He does that all the time, sometimes in a negative direction, sometimes the other way.

He is a shitty journalist if he considers himself one.

This post could be said before what he said about Pryor. I'd prefer it be taken that way so it doesn't seem like I'm just hating on him for talking about our starting QB.

I'm with Capo. I listened to the audio synopsis played by ESPN, and while Herbstreit ripped Pryor pretty good, he was spot on with what he said. In fact, he put the Ohio State program as whole in a very good light.

unfortunately, that's not the way it's playing out outside of the OSU fanbase. I live in KC and while working out today with my OSU shirt and hat on, I was approached by several KU, Mizzou, Arkansas, and Texas fans....laughing all the way. They seemed to collect around the notion that this tat-gate thing confirms what Clarett said was true.

Trust me.....Ohio State has come off looking worse than ever. One side thinks Ohio State is the epitome of fat-cat NCAA system schools. The other side thinks Ohio State is a cesspool of rampant cheating.

Herbstreit sounded off today because he had 2 motives:

1. gain stature in the world of CFB
2. get even with Pryor in their little cat fight

I don't disagree with much of what Herbstreit said. But he has been remarkably quiet about REggie Bush and Cam Newton. Why the imbalance in coverage of the different scandals ?

Him going to OSU and his little feud with Pryor probably had a lot to do with it.

you issue a correction. You don't show bias (one way or the other). He does that all the time, sometimes in a negative direction, sometimes the other way.

I was waiting for his quote on Cowturd, "It looks like Brewster, Hall, and Fields were not involved so I apologize for throwing their names around on the Boise/Utah telecast last night. The fact remains that....blah blah blah"
