or when he was tossed from minnesota, notre dame, and south carolina for questionable things. dont know. Was he living the dream when Woody quietly told him to leave the program for questionable recruiting practices?
on the other hand, the positive approach is nice and missing today. i mean in most situations their is not a need to rip a coach, player, etc for a lot of the things people want to, especially on national tv. those who do end up like trev alberts/mark may. those who dont have their own detractors and end up like jesse palmer/herbstreit. then again i guess herbstreit can hand criticism, after all, hes a man, hes forty (one).Back in the day when Herbie had his radio program, his insight and knowledge of the game were excellent and I very much enjoyed listening to the show. Once he went national, he seemed to go out of the way to please each and every fanbase. You will rarely hear him criticize a coach, player or program. He just never goes out on that limb. Pete Carroll, Rodriguez, Ferentz, Mack Brown, Urban, Saban, and of course, Boise are all examples. That approach makes him popular amongst most fanbases, and that's what ESPN likes. The only program he doesn't hesitate to criticize is ours. I suspect that deep down he feels he is maintaining his credibility. I don't always appreciate it, and I certainly don't think it's necessary, but it doesn't bother me as much as it does some people around here.
What I do find annoying is that over time, he has become more and more a talking head. His knowledge is good, not great, and he is presented as this great "seer of all things college football". Personally, I would MUCH rather listen to Spiels call a game than Herbstreit. I feel like I get a lot more insight into the game, certainly on the defensive side of the ball, and I get a lot less blather.
As for TP's tweets and his sidelines behavior, I think I'll put my trust in Tress to handle it the right way. Molding character and maturity is a process, not an event.

"immature" "not mature" "lacks leadership" saying pryor throws hissy fits on the sidelines, throwing his helmet, water bottles, yelling at coaches. mentioning he spends more time yelling at tressel than picking his teammates up. etc. when asked if he would speak to pryor again, "if i saw him." also mentioned that pryor does not take adversity well, does not exhibit the leadership skills or mental toughness for the next level like a luck who picks up his teammates, and would have put his arm around posey rather than kick the dirt, taking his helmet off and screaming, etc. did mention hes a physical freak. additionally, pointed that the tweet is just another example of all of this. herbie mentioned hes a huge buckeye fan but his job is to be objective. interesting...
imo, hes a color guy, a commentator and a opinion guy. ill likely get shredded for this also, but as someone who has been to every home game, plus this year... his sideline demeanor leaves a lot to be desired. after the posey drop he took his helmet off on the field (could have been 15) and got all animated. all things aside, lots of room for commentary on the kid based upon his actions inside stadiums alone. He can't win no matter what he says, so he should be the adult and not belabor it...which sadly he seems to have chosen not to do. I'm sure we'll be hearing "Pryor=Vince Young" comparisons any second now out of Bristol...

potentially, but without bashing either a current buckeye or a past captain... the easier solution is probably to-not throw your helmet, not throw waterbottles/other objects, not pout like a five year old, not scream at your head coach, not have to be pulled away from an assistant coach, not ream your teammates, not throw your arms around like a moody teenage girl after a ball is dropped/not caught/miscommunication, not take your helmet off on the field and act like the star of the jr theatrical production. that is before you get to the list of affirmative actions which could be undertaken, such as- pick your teammate up, some sort of positive response, etc.But I think you'd agree that his status as a Buckeye makes Herbstreit's an atypical commentator situation as far as things OSU are concerned...especially when engaging in a public pissing match with the starting QB.
Was he asked about Pelini? (didn't hear the interview either)LightningRod;1819475; said:I did not listen to the ESPN commentary given by Kirk today so I am not familiar with the context of his criticism of Pryor. If the context was poor sideline demeanor and gameday behavior, did Kirk give equal time to his former OSU teammate Bo Pelini?
