QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips)

didn't this same joker come on 97.1 the fan, in Columbus, with Bruce Hooley and categorically state that Pryor was going to be the next Maurice Clarett because of his lack of maturity?

Do you think a comment like that is quickly forgotten?

The problem is TP's tweet doesn't help the issue with maturity. Plus Herbie isn't the only former Buckeye that has been worried about this. LeCharles Bentley has been very outspoken on Cleveland radio that TP lacks that maturity.

I'm wondering how those standards hold up everywhere else..

Oh, and Herbstreit can fuck...Michigan. And TP can fuck...Michigan. And those of you who love Herbie can fuck...Michigan. And those of you who hate Herbie can fuck...Michigan. And if you don't like it then fuck...Michigan. And while I'm at it, I will tell myself fuck...Michigan.

Finally - a post that stays on topic.

when TP starts driving around with kevlar and grey goose then maybe...

but, comparing TP to Clarett based solely off of how he ultimately signed his LOI is insulting and ignorant. and it's especially hypocritical coming from the guy that was constantly fellating Pete Carroll and USC, who are the poster children for the comparison he was trying to make.

This.

I heard Spiels giving praise to Mike Martin while broadcasting the Michigan game...maybe we could revoke his alumni membership?

And telling them that they need to keep RichRod? I was laughing out loud as he told them that they have the "pieces in place on offense" and that now "all they have to do is put them in place on defense".

That's a bloody public service to the BuckeyePlanet! :slappy:

Herbie knows all too well.. that intense pressure and scrutiny comes with being the OSU QB

If Herbie came off as an OSU homer... what would that do to his career, reputation and status as a national analyst... He'd be Mark May

To think he's not hoping from the deepest part of his heart that OSU and TP are the best of the best.. so he can scream it... is ludicrous... but he MUST present himself as unbiased

Awful comparison. Nobody is debating that, and nobody is saying he hasn't gone overboard at times. I get tired of some of the stuff he says and I like him.

But he's a Buckeye. It's ridiculous to think he's not.

i'm not debating whether or not he's a buckeye at heart. but the fact of the matter is that he's given plenty of ammo to anyone that wants to argue that he's not.

Back in the day when Herbie had his radio program, his insight and knowledge of the game were excellent and I very much enjoyed listening to the show. Once he went national, he seemed to go out of the way to please each and every fanbase. You will rarely hear him criticize a coach, player or program. He just never goes out on that limb. Pete Carroll, Rodriguez, Ferentz, Mack Brown, Urban, Saban, and of course, Boise are all examples. That approach makes him popular amongst most fanbases, and that's what ESPN likes. The only program he doesn't hesitate to criticize is ours. I suspect that deep down he feels he is maintaining his credibility. I don't always appreciate it, and I certainly don't think it's necessary, but it doesn't bother me as much as it does some people around here.

What I do find annoying is that over time, he has become more and more a talking head. His knowledge is good, not great, and he is presented as this great "seer of all things college football". Personally, I would MUCH rather listen to Spiels call a game than Herbstreit. I feel like I get a lot more insight into the game, certainly on the defensive side of the ball, and I get a lot less blather.

As for TP's tweets and his sidelines behavior, I think I'll put my trust in Tress to handle it the right way. Molding character and maturity is a process, not an event.

not really.

Anyone that needs proof of Herbie's on air script or his fear of his national reputation, just look at the 2008 season.

Herbie opens the year as a guest on Sportscenter and says he's picked Penn State to win the Big 10 championship. National Audience.

Then on his show, he goes on to say he expects Ohio State to take the Big 10.

So what are the options here?

 • He plays the role ESPN gives him?
 • He's way too concerned about his national reputation?
 • He thinks viewers/listeners attention span is so short he can flip-flop without anyone noticing?
And I hate the people who say "what do you expect, he should just be biased towards the Bucks?"

Hell no. I don't want him to be biased. I want him to be truthful. I want him to not go so overboard in his criticism of the Big 10 and Buckeyes just to look "extra" unbiased in the yes of the national viewer. Because that is exactly what he does.

He rips the conference in an effort to raise his stature in the eyes of others. Unless you really believe the loss to LSU did set the Big 10 back to the 1940's.

Go ahead and be critical. Just be critical in a fair way.

This post is pretty spot on. His knowledge of the game, especially when calling games, is average at best. He doesn't come close to a guy like Todd Blackledge or Spiels.

But he's extremely popular, and for your casual fan he's built a lot of credibility. For the college football fanatic, I've found he isn't very popular for the reasons you stated.
