QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips)

He crossed the line. End of story. His slant against tOSU in an effort to retain credibility has rendered him equally non-credible.

I wonder how this plays out when tOSU makes a run at a MNC... does he come home as the Prodigal Son... Frankly, I'm with the older brother in this story if he does.
Might have been hyperbole, but the sentiment expressed regarding the line play and Pryor's limited progress are real. Buckeye fans might feel his cred is lost, but I can guarantee you that people outside Buckeye Nation feel differently. Where I live, he stated things that I hear all the time so I don't know that his "cred" is lost at all.

FIFY.

Show me one [censored]ing time Herbie has called any other player on any other [censored]ing team "fat", "stupid", "queer", or any other thing you might call someone you wanted to fight, and I'll admit I overreacted. You can't. So I won't.

did he use the word "queer" i was unaware of that?

something to make me want to fight? not really my style, then again when youre 6-7 2something those who want to fight you either a) have a napoleonic complex or b) probably have some mr miyagi jijitsui crap thatd whop my ass... so i typically refrain from it.

i overreacted? in saying it have some feather of truth? or reality? or whatever you might say...

He actually said "in the last 10 years, or college football history", and he wasn't just talking about OSU lines, so you'd have to do a heck of a lot more evaluation to verify that (non)truth. It's actually pretty easy to say: he went way over the top and made a completely unverifiable and almost certainly wrong statement. There are a lot of people here making reasonable critiques of the OL play this year and in recent years, but Herbie is not one of them with his recent comments.

how many comments are "unverifiable" lets just say lots...

i think id entertain the last ten years underachievers argument, ever well likely a pretty tight stretch there...

While I tend to agree with the substance of what Herbstreit said, the semantics don't sit well with me. I too am frustrated many times with the line and QB play but I would never come on here and articulate those feelings as Kirk did on the record. I think he views himself as someone who says what needs to be said and he feels being harsh will prove it.

why not? why cant he? is that not his job? hes paid millions to provide honest commentary/entertainment. it appears hes done that.

being harsh, sometimes reality is harsh. maybe itll be motivation, maybe not. the one thing i can say is that this team wouldnt jive with ken hitchcock, hed rip the nuts of off these kids...

http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/other-osu-professional-sports/610499-hitchionary.html

then again hes got stuff to worry about with his own club.

slant against? maybe its true, maybe its the reality. maybe everyone has their panties in such a wad around here they cant see the reality. whens the last time ohio state beat a team that was equal in talent? 2002? certainly not in the past 3 or more years, no way, i wont even entertain that discussion. maybe its time to pull of the scarlet glasses and take a look at reality.

mnc? multinational corporation? or do you mean a national championship? if so with a laughable loss to purdue and the usc game and prior showings and... not gonna happen.

It's pretty simple jo. BP doesn't tolerate calling kids names, especially via inflammatory attacks like "fat", particularly when it's completely false. That doesn't fly here, why should Kirk be allowed to get away with it?

Or you could keep excusing his comments, which you already admitted you disagreed with regarding 'fat', in order to keep saying we're blind, oversensitive homers.

Have you even read the criticism of Herbie on this topic? It has absolutely nothing to do with whether Ohio State has been disappointing or whether the OL/QB are underachieving. NOTHING. Read through the posts.

Its how he said it. He did it in a overreacting "fanboy" way. And in the process, he made himself and the university look silly. In his effort to separate himself from all things Ohio State while on the air, he did exactly the opposite. He reacted like some drunk 40-year-old in the 14th row of C Deck pissed off because he feels like he deserves better from a few inexperienced college kids. That's bullshit and he deserves every bit of criticism he gets for it.

If he had done it the way we would expect from a professional, I don't think any reasonable person would be upset about it. They've been disappointing. They've underachieved. We'd like to see them pick it up and play better. That's how most of us feel. That's not what Herbie said.

He didn't use "stupid" either. That wasn't the point.

No. Inflammatory remarks. Hey, fat fuck, go fuck your mother! Shit like that. Stuff one would say if they were trying to provoke another. You can't sit there and tell me that he didn't know calling a CFB player "fat" or "lazy" wouldn't draw fire. Mike Gundy flipped the fuck out for essentially the same shit, on a female, no less, and he was respected for it. Herbie does it, and Buckeye fans are sticking up for him?! That's horseshit.

No jo! I was saying that if you could prove to me that's Herbie's "style"...that he had said that type of shit about ANY other team, that I would admit I overreacted. You can't find that evidence, because it doesn't exist. So I won't be admitting jack shit.

So unprofessional attacks on youngsters are acceptable because they are uttered in another venue?

I'm well aware that instigation gets you promoted in Bristol, but that doesn't make it acceptable behavior imo.

Exactly.

He didn't say the linemen were getting pushed around. He called them fat and lazy.

He didn't say they weren't playing up to their ability. He said they were the biggest underachievers out of over 1000 offensive line squads (that's just the number before in-season injuries/breakdowns reshuffled the lines).

It was immature garbage, jo.

Hypestreit was a QB, so it's his nature to blame the line when the QB gets pressure. More often than not, it's the QB who didn't get rid of the ball fast enough. Not to say that line play is unimportant, or that our tackles didn't do a very good job against Purdue, but when the QB isn't making reads and checking down, he's going to get hit a lot. In terms of run blocking, our backs have had very nice holes all year. He's overreacting and over the top, and bashing an offense that's scoring 30ppg in Big Ten play. There's some other agenda at work here, as there's nothing substantive to justify the level of his comments. We have a young line that's been inconsistent, that's all. It's youth, not lack of effort.

So, were you a guard or tackle?
