I'd say "fat" was a very unfair and wrong characterization, and "lazy" is a pretty harsh criticism of 19 year olds.

Adams, Shugarts, Brewster & Browning are not fat at all. Boren is the only one close to fitting that description, and he's more stout than sloppy. He's also the best player on the line.

I think you might be correct that his assessment was more harsh than he'd have on any other program and was hyperbole, but I agreed with the sentiment that Pryor hasn't progressed like other talent has and the oline at Columbus has underperformed.

I don't really care how true a statement is if it comes across in such a classless manner. There are a lot of ways to make your point about weaknesses without attacking kids on a personal level.

That's not really similar. That's a reasonable opinion about how they'd match up, not an emotional personal attack... unless he said they were slow, fat and untalented or something.
Regarding the o-line, did I miss something? I never heard Herbie call anyone "fat" or "lazy"....where the hell did that come from? I was talking about the fact that he called the OSU o-line "the most underachieving o-lines in the past 10 years......" I must have missed something there, or someone is manifesting this to make it worse than it really was. Again, sometimes, a spade is a spade.

I can't imagine Tressel will take kindly to "fat and lazy" in regards to his players. Critiscm is fair, but personal attacks on kids probably gets him a TO, IMO.

I know that he is saying it because he IS from Ohio State. Somehow, that gives him a free pass so to speak. I really don't like the comments because they seem disingenuous and an over-reaction to a situation that will be forgotten one day when Pryor grows up a little and the moon and the planets are aligned. Herbie will swing back just like the pedulum from Poe's Pit and the Pedulum.

The "reality" of the story (OL line is young and Pyror needs more reps) is enhanced through Poe's focus on sensation: the dungeon (the ESPN studio) is airless and unlit, the narrator (Herbie) is subject to thirst and starvation (they don't pay much for his diatribe), he is swarmed by rats (May, Corso etc), the closing walls are red-hot metal and, of course, the razor-sharp pendulum threatens to slice into the narrator (removing his tongue for the blasphemy he speaks).

I found the audio of Herbie calling the o-line "big, fat, and slow off of the line of scrimmage......" I don't agree with the "fat" comment, that was personal, and uncalled for, I agree. However, I do agree with "big and slow off of the line of scrimmage" and there is no disputing that.

The personal attack aside, everything he said on College Gameday (which was my original point of reference) was appropriate and accurate, in my opinion. As I mentioned earlier (along with many others on this thread), quit sugarcoating the obvious: the OSU offensive line struggles consistently. They need to improve, period.............and I don't find any issue with Herbie expressing his opinion in an intense manner on College Gameday. Calling a kid fat? Not good, and uncalled for, but these are big boys, they shouldn't be listening to this stuff anyways . I was called much worse at a younger age than 19.......:tibor:.......very unprofessional of Herbie nontheless.

Fat makes the other words wrong too. "Big" isn't a fuckin' insult.

I keep hearing the argument that Herbie needs to remain "unbiased" to work for ESPN. When the fuck did being a responsible sports tv personality have anything to do with getting or keeping a job at ESPN?

Herbie has a point. There are alot of people outside of big ten territory who see OSU every week, and what they are seeing is not normal. Pryor is definitely not where i thought he would be..at one point i thought they should just let him roll out and throw. He could then just haul ass with his long strides and get a first down when things broke down.

I think he has a special gift as a runner but will not ever really refine himself as a passer. He throws up serious ducks..Btw, would you still be listening if they were pumping sunshine? All Herbstreit did was tell the truth AS HE SEES IT. It is kinda interesting to see how quick it takes for OSU fans to NOT listen to the "talking heads".

P1 - The problem being that he hasn't shown a great ability to throw on the run and opponents have recognized that the don't really need to worry about him running up the middle. Spread the field on defense and don't let Pryor get to the edge is a good way to contain OSU right now.

P2 - bkb suggesting people not watch shit that gets them riled up is nothing new. he has repeatedly stated that, if you are angered by something you are hearing somebody on ESPN say, you should change the channel. Don't preach to people when you don't know what you are talking about.

Also, nobody has much of a problem with criticism from Herbstreit. The complaints have mostly been about the hyperbolic nature of his comments. ("Fat", "Lazy", and "biggest underachievers in the last 10 years" come to mind as over-the-top type comments)

You say that like this sentence makes sense. What isn't normal?

That OSU is struggling after losing their entire offense of skill players? That's pretty normal (04).
That OSU has great defense and meager offense? That's pretty normal.
That a raw, running quarterback is still a bad passer 14 months after his first practice? That's pretty normal.

This isn't a video game where the AI never adapts to your tendencies. Teams take that away and force Pryor to beat them with his arm.

Wonderful. I think I'll keep watching beyond his 14th month of actual quarterback coaching.

A week ago Pryor was supposed to move to WR and the JT-Pryor combination was a bad match. His bitter coach was still whining that he didn't go to his preferred school with RichRod. Then he went out and actually completed some passes the next week.
All Herbstreit did was tell the truth AS HE SEES IT.
