ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit might be the best pound-for-pound analyst on television, and if anyone thought the former Ohio State quarterback couldn't be objective when it came to the Buckeyes, he annihilated that notion Saturday with a scathing review of the program, and in particular, quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

"You don't see him progressing to become a complete quarterback,'' Herbstreit said. "He is not advancing as a quarterback. ? He looks confused, his body language is terrible. Other than that, he?s playing well.''

Herbstreit wasn't done with Ohio State:
"They can't run the ball because they have probably the biggest underachieving offensive line in the last 10 years or college football history, and they're uninspired consistently.''

Disagree on the Herbstreit part. Being overtly negative and being objective are not the same thing. Kirk sounded like a very frustrated fan in that segment, not like a disinterested observer. He let his wish for Buckeye success overshadow his objectivity.

I mentioned in the Terrelle Pryor thread that I saw this live on College GameDay on Saturday morning. I didn't see anything wrong with what was said, especially at the time (after an ugly loss to Purdue and before an encouraging win against Minnesota). Herbie does not wear OSU shades when he is on the stage (nor should he). In fact, I believe he would have said the same things on his local radio show here in Columbus.

I just don't see how you can really argue with what he said, especially regarding the offensive line. I'm not trying to bash anyone by saying that, but often times, the truth hurts.

I'd say "fat" was a very unfair and wrong characterization, and "lazy" is a pretty harsh criticism of 19 year olds.

Adams, Shugarts, Brewster & Browning are not fat at all. Boren is the only one close to fitting that description, and he's more stout than sloppy. He's also the best player on the line.

We've discussed Herbie's comments ad nauseum on the Gameday thread, but it bears repeating that he wasn't necessarily incorrect to be critical of Pryor and the OL. Its the words and the manner in which the criticism was directed. It reaked of something you would have read on the Scout board and something that would not be tolerated here.

Kirk Hypestreit is becoming infected with the Bristol Virus. In previous infectees, such as Mark May and Trev Alberts, it has caused a swelling of the cranium and degradation of analytical skills, and in advanced cases, career death. He needs to get it treated ASAP.

I don't necessarily disagree with much of what Herbie said, just the way it came out. He was very negative but it didn't sound like he was trying to be mean. It sounded more like he was frustrated and frustration doesn't mesh well with objectivity. The article I responded to was about his objectivity, not about his opinion.

Herbie has gone to great lengths to not be viewed as a fanboy on ESPN, but in his diatribe on saturday, that's exactly what he sounded like. I think he took a step back in his development. Next Saturday is a new game, and he needs to work to get better every day.

I'm glad he said what he said. I think most of us agree that it's true. Why people are hissing over the WAY he said it I don't quite understand. Why sugarcoat it? He's a Buckeye fan too, and he's obviously a frustrated former player/alumni. Maybe someone in the program will actually listen to an outcry from a former player because we all know they don't listen to the fans(which they shouldn't do because let's be honest, most of the fans don't know half of what they talk about.).

Truth hurts. deal with it. You think we would have thick skin by now when it comes to the media, so why everyone is like "oh no, boo hoo Herby is hating on us!" is beyond me. I say the same shit he does from my couch.

Maybe calling this group fat/lazy is over the top(and I don't remember hearing that), but if you take his words meaning our programs offensive line in the last 10 years has been the most underachieving in CFB, then i'd probably agree with that yes. We've recruited A LOT of studs on the offensive line since Tressel has been here. But tell me, what has been the most underachieving unit during his tenure? And should I even mention Boone and Downing? Not exactly role models for physical fitness and health given their history but I don't think that falls into what Kirk was talking about.

So fat and lazy? Who knows. I don't know if they're lazy or not. You don't determine if a player is lazy on Saturdays. You determine that by the offseason and Sunday - Friday.

I agree that Herbie went a little balastic on OSU, but I don't think it was uncalled for at all, as a fan, I found it to be justified, at the time. I don't believe in "sugarcoating" anything, tell things as they are, speak the truth, and often times, the truth can be painful. But that's just me, just my opinion. I've heard Herbie rip other programs, and conferences for that matter. I remember people being "up in arms" last year when Utah was selected to play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Herbie commented that he didn't beleive the Mountain West conference could compete and that Utah didn't necassarily deserve the BCS berth. I've heard him on his radio program in Columbus (97.1 "The Fan") ripping OSU, specifically before the 2007 NC game vs LSU. He went on a tangent about how the nation didn't respect OSU football and how non-OSU college football fans didn't care about the fact that OSU wins the Big Ten consistently, that they needed to beat LSU to prove that they are a legitimate program. I didn't disagree with him them, and I didn't disagree with him on Saturday. I don't always agree with what Herbie has to say, but sometimes, you have to call a spade a spade.


Regarding the o-line, did I miss something? I never heard Herbie call anyone "fat" or "lazy"....where the hell did that come from? I was talking about the fact that he called the OSU o-line "the most underachieving o-lines in the past 10 years......" I must have missed something there, or someone is manifesting this to make it worse than it really was. Again, sometimes, a spade is a spade.

This is my thinking on this subject too. He is being overly negative BECAUSE he cares so much. That is why he doesn't rip into other programs like that.

While it may be misguided using his position on ESPN/ABC to voice his displeasure at the direction of the program he loves. He might be growing more and more frustrated as he has been voicing his main problem (Tressel's offensive philosophy) for a few years now on Columbus radio.

I am sure he hears it all the time since he is on the road so much in other colleges since Ohio St is the nation's favorite whipping boy.
