Good morning!

College football begins in full force tonight. Sophomore quarterback Stephen Garcia (Jefferson) takes the South Carolina Gamecocks into North Carolina State, and the late-night fare has Oregon visiting Boise State. There are games throughout Labor Day weekend, capped by Miami at Florida State on Monday night.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit recently appeared on a conference call to preview the 2009 season. Here's a sampling:

Q: What's another really big early season game?
Herbstreit: USC at Ohio State on Sept. 12. In our subjective world, you can only go by the non-conference and bowl games. The Big Ten has struggled mightily in those two areas. What Ohio State has been able to accomplish in the Big Ten with Jim Tressel has been amazing. But they've been hurt by their performance on the big stage against Florida, LSU and last year against USC in a non-conference game. USC-Ohio State is a huge game in that respect. Ohio State is not only carrying their own flag into that game, but the conference flag as well

Alright, I apologize first off that I have not read this entire thread, but I'm asking to be proven wrong here, I want to believe that Herbie is a good representative of Ohio State, however can anyone here provide for me a simple instance where he actually "cheered" for us recently?

My brother and I got in an argument recently, where he stated that he likes Herbie and how unbiased he is, I said that that is fine, Herbie can be unbiased, but am I seriously in the minority here? Is it just me, or does it seem that Herbstreit tries to be sooo unbiased that he becomes biased against Ohio State because of it? I cannot recall the last time Herbstreit said one good thing about Ohio State in the national media... in fact, all I can recall is Herbie trying to distance himself from Ohio State as much as possible.

Sure, I have more respect for guys like Spielman, Robert Smith, Kellogg, Carter, George, etc. who try to be unbiased, but also admit their partiality towards Ohio State, but when was the last time Herbie showed some OSU love? Oh, because his kids where Ohio State gear on gameday? Great, but when was the last time Herbie said we would win the game and not get blown out? I personally don't know that answer, and maybe I'm way off base, but I simply cannot remember when Herbie actually picked us to win.

And not only that, but he seems like he has been a 100% homer to the local media to me (on the radio stations in Columbus), but when its ESPN time, its like Herbie has never heard of Ohio State, and doesn't want to know about them... to me it seems as if Herbie trys 110% to not be known as the QB of Ohio State from 1992, instead of trying 110% as being known as a true sports analyst.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if half the stuff he says is scripted. Probably not word-for-word, but ESPN has made it pretty obvious that they have certain agendas. Didn't Cowherd mention this or get in trouble for something like not following an agenda?

Herbie is a graduate of OSU. He was the QB. He's all Buckeye.

Would you take a 6-figure job if it meant being as unbiased as possible (possibly biased toward SEC teams)?

Thats a good point, actually great point, maybe he's just playing a role like Mark May is (I refuse to believe someone could be as dumb, idiotic, ignorant, retarded, and just plain stupid like he is), and actually be serious about it. Yes, Herbie is a grad of OSU, sure he started at QB, but again when was the last time he actually gave us props before, during, or after a game? I simply cannot think of a time when he did either, all I see is a guy who trys to by as unbiased as he can, and instead comes of as being pretty much anti-OSU altogether.

EDIT: By the way, I have absolutely no idea what you are getting at with that picture OregonBuckeye...

I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying at all. He rarely supports OSU unless he has a reason, which might not sound like a big deal to some.. but he does go out of his way to praise other programs (Florida). It's annoying. He's highlighted negatives of OSU before, too, which is the most concerning to me.. but I'd be surprised if he were as "unbiased" as he appears on ESPN. I have no doubt that he loves the Buckeyes. I think he had his kids on the Gameday stage with OSU gear on recently?

I don't hate the guy. I like hearing him call games, actually.

I've been having a lot of similiar thoughts about all the ESPN analysts not just Herbie. I think like everyone has already said, he's stuck in the middle. I'm sure he will just let the games play out before saying too much like he usually does either positive or negative about OSU. Remember, it's only week 4 in the college football season. OSU will have it's opportunity to climb back into the top 5. To defend Herbie's case, There has not been a lot of positive to support OSU's case in the past few years. They are what they are. One of the best teams in the Big 10 but haven't performed on the big stage. What do you want him to say? OSU's worthy of being in the Nat'l Title Game this year?

I really think this SEC/ESPN deal has brainwashed the media as well as the reporting analysts. You can see that there is a conscience effort to not talk Big Ten or continue to downgrade the Big 10 in their reports of the games. I think ESPN is purposely not talking Big 10 on a national scale in-part b/c of the Big 10 network. B/c they are considered competition, they are trying to make the Big 10 obsolete and decrease the national interest similiar to what they have done with the Big East, conference USA, ect... It's SEC all the time.

How about the comments on South Carolina deserving of a top 15 ranking after their home win against Ole Miss? What a joke. Ole Miss should have never been in the top 5 to begin with let alone South Carolina jumping into and moving up 15 spots in the poles. Both teams looked horrible on offense. I don't think Garcia could start for half the teams in the Big 10. And this is only a week after they gave up 40 plus to UGA and lost.

Tennessee struggles against OU (Ohio, not the sooners), and none of them talk about how UF only beat Tenn by 10 the week before. UF has gone back to the Tebow show (look where it got them) b/c they have no downfield threat and they are still annointed an eventual spot in the Nat'l Title Game despite their offensive struggles (unless Tebow doesn't come back healthy).

LSU should have lost to Miss St yesterday.

From what I have seen of the SEC this year, I think Alabama is deserving of a top 5 ranking, if not the best team in the country, UF should be in the top 5 but not #1, and the only other team that deserves to be in the top 15 is LSU, but not #7.

You watch, there will be 6 SEC teams ranked in the top 25 @ the end of the year. and probably 2 of them shouldn't be if you look @ their body of work for the entire year compared to other teams that might deserve it more Usually this conference thing goes in cycles but I have the feeling this SEC crap is going to last a little longer.

Another great defensive performance by the Bucks this weekend. I like the new wrinkle w/ the zone read running and Ballard as the H-back. NICE!!!!

I heard this on Saturday morning on College Gameday. Why would you be shocked by this? Herbie being a former OSU QB means nothing when he's on the stage, and I think he would say the same things on his "regular radio gig" in Columbus. This is not news worthy, this is CFT making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I didn't hear too many fans disputing these comments before the Minnesota game.

Again, this is not news.

Well, the real news is that even in his struggles, Pryor is twice the QB Herbie was in his prime. Maybe Herbie would like to comment on that a
little bit.
