QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips)

In my opinion, Herbie is as frustrated as everyone and is doing the only thing he knows how to try to rectify the situation. Looking back honestly, it doesn't appear that the Big Ten has not been a top (top two or three anyway) conference since about the 03-04 timeframe. In 02, the Big Ten was tough, dog tough, and playing though that schedule prepared the Buckeyes to take it to Miami who at the time was putting up big stats in a weak Big East. The Fiesta Bowl that year (NCG) was not as close as the score indicated.

I think Herbie is, in his own way, calling out the Big Ten. The AD, Coaches, Presidents, etc. need to fix the problem. Recruit, coach, open wallets to get great coaches, whatever you have to do but fix the damn problem. Because if you don't, you know what's going to happen. Big Ten teams are going to start getting left out of BCS bowls (we've enjoyed two for a while now). Ultimately, you are going to get an undefeated Big Ten team get passed over for the national championship by a one loss team from another conference. By that time, it will be panic. Herbie is trying to head that off at the pass, so to speak. I hope it works. The Big Ten needs to man-up, big time.

FWIW, I think Ohio State is doing about the best job of this, at least in the last couple of years. Tonights game will be a good barometer of where they are.

Good call. I'm not a Herbie fan at all, but I do think his pimping of USC's "aggression and competitiveness" is in part an attempt to send a message to OSU about what it takes to dominate The Buckeyes, and the whole Big Ten need to get their nasty back.

I like Herbie and I am mindful that much of what he says is scripted. Few of us would argue that the Big Ten is in the worst shape it has been in a very long time, especially teams such as TSUN, Wisconsin, and Purdue.

Ohio State fans need to remember that Herbie is not employed to promote Ohio State, the Big Ten or cover up shortcomings of our team or conference.

Instead, Herbie is paid to be an objective authority on the game whose insightful comments add to the viewer's experience--and this is what disappointed me so much about his commentary during the Rose Bowl.

In fact, I thought Herbie hurt himself professionally with his biased and non-substantive comments about the Big Ten during the Rose Bowl. I was embarrassed for him.

It is one thing to indicate that you think the Big Ten is in a down cycle and another to just keep going back to that well in a seeming lovefest for USC and "my Gators".

Players have good and bad games and so do sportscasters. Herbie is often very good but the Rose Bowl was, in the kindest light, not one of his best games.

Herbie should remember that we appreciate his commentary much more when he is objective and shares his well-informed insights into play on the field. As the Rose Bowl unfolded, he shared less insights into the game and more opinions about matters outside it. I hope in the future he will avoid that.

I stopped watching the Rose Bowl when it became a blow-out. Was Penn State giving him much to talk about? What more insight could you give about a blow-out like that. It could only assume his talking about matters outside the game was filler material. I heard a lot of it during Ohio State's loss at USC.

"Does the Big 10 get points for losing all its bowl games?"

Not appropriate in any situation.

Herbstriet is consistent.

He says the same things on his local show here in Columbus.

He does show his frustration with Ohio State more locally (obviously) than he does nationally.

He does seem to go over the top when talking about USC and the SEC. The local guys always play a clip of him saying "SEC speed" whenever they say anything about an SEC team so they get on him about it as well.

That said, there is nothing anyone can say that's going to make anyone think that the Big 10 is right there with the Big East as far as being a competitive conference. NONE of the teams in the Big 10 have done anything to dispel the notion that the Big 10 is horrible conference.

The Big Ten is down. Ohio State was seconds away from beating Texas and Iowa took a Missouri team that had been considered a possible national champion into overtime.

Down, yes. Horrible, I don't agree. Inferior to the Big East, I don't agree.

Get ready

Get ready all you haters.... its coming. OU is down 10 w/ 3 min to go.

Your hate target Herbie is going to be all over the SEC's nuts. But guess what.... UF/Meyer are going to get a 2nd title in 3 years, 3 in a row for the SEC and the SEC's bowl record over the past 3 years is a billion times better than our Big Ten.

They have earned it. How bout instead of whining the Big Ten shows up and figures out how to actually win big games and bowl games.

As I type... OU misses it on 4th down....... it's closer you Herbie haters.

He can be all over the SEC's nuts....that is fine......the real is question is if he will say this win sends the Big 10 back into the 1940's??

He was on Charlotte radio yesterday, hyping the speed discrepency between the Big 10 and Southern Schools.

It was awesome.

The difference is / was in the speed of their D line.
That's it.

It's such an amazing generalization that the SEC has much faster DL's. Are they that much faster, or are their schemes more aggresive??

Are Thaddeus Gibson, Vernon Gholston, Aaron Maybin, Anthony Spencer, etc. slow??

The Big 10 continues to put players into the NFL at a respectable rate compared to the SEC. That tells me they have comparable talent...

The SEC is on a hot streak right now. Can't deny it. But Herbstreit continues to kick the Big 10 while it is down. Keep in mind the Big 10 continues to have a better bowl record vs. the SEC since 1998.

I'm sure he'd just say 1998 was a very long time ago.....10 years is ancient history.

They are that much faster. If you remember our game against Fla., Troy was running for his life the whole game, Then in our game against Lsu, same thing, They kept Todd running for his life. Anyone who knows anything about this knows that the d line speed was the difference.
Kirk is not doing anything but stating the obvious.

agreed. i don't understand why everyone is so afraid to say it. i do, however, get a kick when they talk about SEC speed and show the receivers. that's not what i think think about. like you say, its the DL.
