QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips)
if ANYONE didnt know, Herbie still thinks Florida is best team in the country - he just said so :roll1:
Have you watched Florida play the past six weeks?

Is it possible he's been saying this because they actually are, well, the best team in the country this year?

did anyone hear Herbie on Tirico & Van Pelt today?

he was on there talking Big 10, and he said he doesn't think the Big 10 will ever be able to compete with the "speed" of the SEC and Pac-10 (Pac 10 speed? didn't PSU destroy Oregon State?)

then he says "well, you look at Michigan losing to App State, and the Big 10 struggling in their bowl games"
huh? didn't scUM finish the season by handling the team of Mr. "Superman SEC Speed" himself? or is he just going to ignore that like the typical ESPN shill.

then he rounds out his call by slurping USC and saying how much he wants to see them play Florida (we haven't even seen if Florida can beat OU?)

Herbie has learned well from Mark May. it's sad what he has become...

Herbie was wearing a blue shirt with an orange tie on yesterday's ESPN broadcast from Miami. I don't think it was a coincidence ...

I also noticed he looked a bit "plump" in the face. Did anyone else see that?

Yeah and I also noticed that when he wears pumps he is knock kneed.
You guys need to take a break about Herbie, he is a highly successful sports broadcaster doing his job very well.

I agree about cutting him some slack. I like him, and think he's a great commentator.

As for his love fest for SEC and USC, it seems sometimes to me that he's overcompensating. He knows that everyone knows he's a Buckeye, so I think he goes out of his way at times to take a seemingly anti-OSU stance.

But srsly...teh dude has put on some weight!!!

I agree. As much as I hate to say it, he is right. The B10 has been down for several years. The speed/size combination of the elite teams nationwide (read: warm climate schools mostly, not just SEC) has been better than ours. Our most recent big stage performances have not helped our cause. It has been said over and over and over again, to make them stop, we need to go out and win. Over the past three years we will have played Florida, Texas (x2), LSU and USC, all schools that we are being compared too. So far only one win (Texas) with another chance tonight.

The bright side is, win tonight, win early in September and all of a sudden the critics will stop. You have to believe that Herbie will be the loudest national broadcaster when we start winning the big ones again.

In my opinion, Herbie is as frustrated as everyone and is doing the only thing he knows how to try to rectify the situation. Looking back honestly, it doesn't appear that the Big Ten has not been a top (top two or three anyway) conference since about the 03-04 timeframe. In 02, the Big Ten was tough, dog tough, and playing though that schedule prepared the Buckeyes to take it to Miami who at the time was putting up big stats in a weak Big East. The Fiesta Bowl that year (NCG) was not as close as the score indicated.

I think Herbie is, in his own way, calling out the Big Ten. The AD, Coaches, Presidents, etc. need to fix the problem. Recruit, coach, open wallets to get great coaches, whatever you have to do but fix the damn problem. Because if you don't, you know what's going to happen. Big Ten teams are going to start getting left out of BCS bowls (we've enjoyed two for a while now). Ultimately, you are going to get an undefeated Big Ten team get passed over for the national championship by a one loss team from another conference. By that time, it will be panic. Herbie is trying to head that off at the pass, so to speak. I hope it works. The Big Ten needs to man-up, big time.

FWIW, I think Ohio State is doing about the best job of this, at least in the last couple of years. Tonights game will be a good barometer of where they are.

Totally correct; however, in football memories are real short, you are only as good as your last game.
