QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

If it was JT's decision, it may be a smart calculation depending on where he is academically. I don't know what the requirements for summer terms are for athletes, but maybe he's ahead of schedule and can shift around things to where giving up a term of scholarship won't really cost him much (relatively, since one class can still set you back several hundred).

Punishment sounds right for the offense. He is trying to establish discipline on the team. It takes more than legal action by the State to do that at times so they have the administrative actions at their disposal.

Fortunately nobody was killed. This would be a very different discussion about what could have been for a promising athlete and leader. Obviously the seriousness of consequences from OVI hadn't sunk in for him. Hopefully they have now.

Sounds too harsh for me...

Heck, his insurance company is going to kick his butt for $4-5K a yr for 4 years.. toss the scholly in .. plus ticket
and this is closing in on $30K plus sitting out a game, having to win your spot back
and deal with the public scrutiny....

If he was hammered.. OK.. but told Meyer he never thought for a second he was drunk... not condoning DWI but we're also talking about a person with exceptional physical skill

DAMN

To play devils advocate, physical skill matters little when one is impaired...and every impaired driver thinks they are "fine" to drive.

So to clear this up, JT will be suspended for the game this weekend(as of right now) and be liable to pay for the tuition for this semester(assuming he doesn't earn it back) but would be available to play the Illinois game through the rest of the season? Also I would like to see Collier get some PT if we do have a good game this weekend and get some backups in. Who knows we may have another 3rd string gem on our hands.

I feel for anyone that has been affected by a drunk driver in one way or another, but lumping in someone who from the reports I've heard blew around a .08 in his only offense with everyone that has ever caused an accident or fatality is a bit of over kill. I'd love to see the numbers of the average BAC level when there is an accident involved because I bet it's close to double the legal limit and probably not the first offense in most cases. Saying this doesn't make it ok, but a 1 game suspension, losing financial aid next summer (which includes class and stipend), and being the butt of every anti OSU joke for the rest of the season is punishment enough IMO. I bet most of us wouldn't even know when we are at .08 and have probably driven in that condition more than we would like to admit. Now the percentage of first offenders that become second offenders within a short period of time is pretty staggering, but if anyone can find the motivation to make sure that his first offense is his only offense it's JT. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

If I learned anything from the Texas Law Hawk this morning: Don't blow or trust the machine.
