QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

His style of play, like unloading on two tackles in one play, wouldn't work for a whole season. He had a huge benefit coming in late in the season when most bodies on the field were worn down. Don't risk injury and take care of yourself. The best reason to stay is to remain in comfortable surroundings because you don't trust yourself on your own. But if your mature enough to not trust yourself you're probably ready, just surround yourself with good people.

I think if Cardale goes to the NFL it wouldn't be a bad decision. He isn't quite ready but he has the tools to be a starter. If he got drafted by a team like Denver, Or New England where two of the best nfl QB's to play the game can be a learning experience it would be great to be heir to the throne. It would also possibly help our chances of Braxton staying home. If Cardale stays i see Braxton leaving. Hopefully he makes a decision that is best for him and i would be happy about either outcome. Cardale is forever a legend in Buckeye football history. This will be a season i tell my kids about when i have them. What a great time to be a Buckeye!

I think the best spot would be the steelers. He looks just like Big Ben. He could sit for 2 years with a little play time in junk games. Then in 2-3 years seamlessly take over.

While we are digging up prescient posts from earlier in the season... *ahem*

Wouldn't be surprised if Cardale sees the field quite a bit even if Barrett is the starter. At the very least I think he'll get a lot of short yardage carries, like a young Tebow or someone like Blake Bell.

Why would we need a QB for short yardage carries when we have Rod Smith and Brionte Dunn? I think Cardale may spell Jt at times, but Urban IMO sticks with Jt. He won the QB job, last thing we want to do is yank a kid and mess with his head. Give Jt all the confidence and get behind him.

Because sometimes you need another runner.

There are plenty of good reasons to do it. Tactically speaking, you have an extra blocker on those plays. On certain variations you can attack the line more quickly without having to make a read or handoff. And not that this is in the playbook much any longer, but you can start the play from under center and attack from closer to the line instead of handing the ball off 5-7 yards deep in the backfield.

I agree with the second part of your point though - Barrett is going to be the guy and I don't really see situational substitutions being a significant part of the plan. One factor that nobody is talking about yet is that by losing Miller they didn't just lose a star and a starter, but they also lost depth at the QB position (insofar as what they had could be considered "depth".) This team is now one play away from starting its 3rd string QB. It's probably best for that player to be preparing as if he might be called upon to start and run the full offense rather than preparing mainly for goalline packages like some sort of bullpen specialist.

Exactly. Idk why with JT now starting thoughts of using Cardale would come up to be used situationally. Can't we be content with our new starting qb before we want to start talking about other packages? The RBs should be emphasized more with JT starting, not our backup QB. Honestly Cardale shouldn't be thought of on goal line for the simple fact that we now have little to no depth at QB if god forbid JT went down. That would mean were one step closer to having to play a true frosh or a walk on. Thanks but no thanks on Cardale risking injury to gain 3yds. That's why we have a full stable of RBs

I thought the same thing today. I'm not so much terrified of JT going down because Cardale would come in (I think Cardale would do ok)...I am moreso terrified that it means we could also be a play away from Collier coming in. The QB depth is not a strength and that is exacerbated with Braxton out. Really hope both guys stay healthy.

Ummm Cardale isn't the 3rd string QB anymore. JT isn't the 2nd string QB anymore. Get it right.

As for Cardale running the ball - you can either leave him on the sideline or keep him involved so he pushes JT in practice in some sort of competition so JT will push himself more to get better at his game. And you never, ever, limit yourself on a potential package, option, especially given Cardale's size and potential as a weapon. The hand-wringing you are doing is very unwarranted.

The Collier thing is a silly thing to think about and is getting way ahead of ourselves. The larger point about Jones remains though.

You absolutely do limit yourself on potential packages. Practice reps are limited. Roles have just changed on short notice and the offense is in the hands of young, inexperienced players. Possibilities get scaled back, not expanded in those situations. To me the most important thing is making sure the starter and the backup are prepared to the fullest extent to run the full base offense rather than platooning and instituting wrinkles.

To me that's not being conservative or passive, it's just being practical. Even if we do end up seeing Cardale used in that kind of situation I'd be surprised if we see it in non-conference play. If he were to be installed as a wrinkle it would probably be later in the season or following a bye week. I think early in the season if and when we do see him it will be for full series to get him competitive reps running the full offense - not in special packages.

worth here:

1. It looks really inviting, the lower round NFL draft picks get a 4 year $2.2M contract: however, it is not guaranteed money. You have to make the team each of the 4 years. There is no guarantee in making an NFL team even if you are drafted.

2. Other than Matt Cassel (who played 4 years at USC and never started at QB); can you think of any QB that made an NFL team for 4 years that started in only 3 (or less) college games?

3. Reportedly Cardale is not a bad student. Regardless of his comment about not wanting to go to class a few years ago he has a 3.0 GPA.

4. I think he has the "inside track" to be the starting QB next year. Neither Barrett or Miller will be healthy for spring practices and he'll get the majority of the reps at QB. There really is no guarantee that Barrett or Miller will even be fully recovered from their injuries and be able to play in the fall (however we sure hope that they are).

5. If he can't beat out Barrett and/or Miller at Ohio State; I don't think it is very likely that he will be able top beat out a veteran NFL QB to make a NFL team, even 3rd string. Both Troy Smith and Terrelle Pryor had problems sticking with an NFL team; although Troy did play 4 years and Terelle 3.

My advise (and nobody has asked for it) is for him to come back next year (his 4th year) and get his degree. He can always opt for the draft next year and there's a decent chance (if he continues to perform at the same level as his last 3 games) he'll greatly increase his draft position. A college degree can insure employment and financial stability for the rest of his life (especially if an NFL career doesn't work out).
