QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

I'm in the opinion that Cardale should be the starter next year. I tried to shake the "caught in the moment feeling" but am sticking with it. He's batting 1.000 right now, and handled himself like a true champion these past 3 games. I cant say with confidence that the same would have happen with either JT or Braxton for that matter. He's an X Factor, picking up crucial first downs... and against 3 of the best defenses the country has. His resume while short, and body of work, to me is much more impressive than both Braxton and JT. As an overall QB, he has more tools than either of the other two.

I think like this.
Brax is in recovery.
JT is in recovery
Who is fully healthy?
That leaves
Cardale.
Collier.
Wait and see how much either Brax or JT can do in the spring.
Cardale has a big game experience that could give him some sort of edge.
How much?

worth here:

1. It looks really inviting, the lower round NFL draft picks get a 4 year $2.2M contract: however, it is not guaranteed money. You have to make the team each of the 4 years. There is no guarantee in making an NFL team even if you are drafted.

2. Other than Matt Cassel (who played 4 years at USC and never started at QB); can you think of any QB that made an NFL team for 4 years that started in only 3 (or less) college games?

3. Reportedly Cardale is not a bad student. Regardless of his comment about not wanting to go to class a few years ago he has a 3.0 GPA.

4. I think he has the "inside track" to be the starting QB next year. Neither Barrett or Miller will be healthy for spring practices and he'll get the majority of the reps at QB. There really is no guarantee that Barrett or Miller will even be fully recovered from their injuries and be able to play in the fall (however we sure hope that they are).

5. If he can't beat out Barrett and/or Miller at Ohio State; I don't think it is very likely that he will be able top beat out a veteran NFL QB to make a NFL team, even 3rd string. Both Troy Smith and Terrelle Pryor had problems sticking with an NFL team; although Troy did play 4 years and Terelle 3.

My advise (and nobody has asked for it) is for him to come back next year (his 4th year) and get his degree. He can always opt for the draft next year and there's a decent chance (if he continues to perform at the same level as his last 3 games) he'll greatly increase his draft position. A college degree can insure employment and financial stability for the rest of his life (especially if an NFL career doesn't work out).

I'm with you on the first 3 points no doubt. But as to #4: JT should be healthy in time for spring ball and Braxton definitely will not. Braxton will be back by July at the earliest it seems and even then may be limited throwing the ball. I think the competition at QB will be pretty open now and I really do not know how it will shake out. Our offense seemed to run a little more efficiently with JT in and I think he is a little quicker on his reads and the grasp of the offense. But Cardale has incredible tangible ability and the gap on intangibles with Barrett was a little exaggerated in my mind. Cardale is just so difficult to bring down and he keeps the chains moving on critical 3rd down runs. But at the end of the day, even with 3 huge wins under his belt, I am not so sure that Barrett would not have done the same...shoot, maybe he ensures a flat blowout against Oregon by taking better care of the ball...that is all speculation but you cannot minimize JT's consistency over the course of 12 games.

As to #5: I'm not so sure on that either...Cardale's game translates to both levels pretty well, but particularly the pro level with his arm and stature. All the time you see college QB's with lackluster college results turn into great pro's. Imo, JT fits what we do a little better than Cardale and he is the better distributor...it's very close and nobody is really "right" in the debate, but I think when you have 2-3 fantastic QB's on one roster, who the starter is actually has little significance for the next level. I mean, Braxton could be the starter over both but I guarantee both Barrett and Jones will project much higher at the QB position...it's just that Braxton is a great college QB and fits our system well...but that ability will not translate to an NFL QB most likely.

JT's injury shouldn't have any lasting impacts. He'll be full go by fall camp. Brax, nobody knows, because shoulder injuries tend to be chronic.

I'll go on record now saying I really, really, really hope Cardale comes back and wins the job. He just adds another dimension to this offense and played outstanding ball against three top-notch defenses in a pressure cooker. That's not to say we won't be fine with either of the other two, but Cardale is my man.

I'm very skeptical to anyone saying JT will be good to go by spring. He injured his planting foot which will most certainly have an impact on his throwing motion. Look at RG3, he still isn't the same.

Cardale will certainly enter the spring as the #1 with Collier #2.

Wasn't Barrett wheeling around on the knee cart on the sidelines during the Sugar Bowl, or is he off that already? Keep in mind that the Spring Game is only three months away.

Not sure on that but looking back in JT's thread, he may not be 100% by spring ball...for some reason I was sure that it was reported he would be. I stand corrected. However, I hope he is healthy...this QB battle is going to be fun to watch. I wouldn't mind seeing Cardale win it, as he has a year on JT and could declare next year, leaving JT 2 years with the reigns.

Keep in mind Cardale hasn't definitively said no yet...

I believe given the time tables for both, neither will be back for the spring game. I think the plan is for both to be back by fall camp. So Cardale will be the main dude all of spring with only Collier as the only non walk-on on roster. So really it's good for Collier's development as well. And he should have a very good grasp on the playbook since he enrolled early and will have been in the system for one complete year, not only season. Kind of like JT last year during spring.
