QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

He's going to get tackled anyway. I think a tentative runner is at more risk that one that is going hard. By put his shoulder down I really mean use that big assed body and run like you mean it when you need a yard.

I wonder if we will shotgun snap with CJ when we do need a yard? I understand that we like to read and play the angles, but at some point we need to put his big ass under center and go get the yard. Why make him run 5 or 6? I don't get why we always have to long snap. Especially since the line has been playing well.

Honest question. Do our QB's and C's know how to snap with the QB under center? Answer: you snap it from the gun so Eze can take it for a 40 yard TD on 4th and a yard.

I honestly don't know. Lol.

I get your point about Eze's run, but there have been quite a few times this year where it has been 3rd or 4th and less than two against lesser opponents and we have failed to pick up the yardage in large part due to formation. IMO, we are Ohio State and we should be able to line up under center, knock them back and pick up a yard to keep the drive alive. I don't understand why we have to live and die with the shotgun.

I've been saying the same thing. Especially with CJ at QB.

If our first offensive play isn't a 50 yard strike right down the middle to Devin Smith, whether we catch it or not, color me disappointed.
I don't want to see this...we don't need to be 2nd and 10 at the beginning of our first possession. Zeke should be able to get 3-5 yards at a minimum on his first carry. I'd much prefer 2nd and 5 or 6 than 2nd and 10 right out the gate...

I wouldn't be against a PA bomb if they think there's a decent chance it could go. I get the feeling the Badgers are going to come in stacking the box to force CJ to throw the ball. Might be a big opportunity to catch them off guard and loosen up the box.

This. Need the confidence of a opening drive touchdown. So much of this team is being ignored and passed by because of one player injury. Need the boys to come out hot and knowing they can hang. Every down will count IMO. There isn't much room for turnovers or ill advised plays.

Understood, and I cant disagree with your thoughts, it only makes sense.

My only point is that, imo, Cardale doesn't pose much of a threat to throw the ball very early in the game considering his lack of experience in game reps, the importance of the game being played, and very little tape of him to review. Yes our O-line is very strong, and EZE is outstanding, but Wisky knows how to play some defense too, and the threat of JT is not there in the beginning of the game, especially in the beginning reps. I fully expect Wisky to stack the box heavy very early and make Cardale either throw over/around them, or make OSU earn yardage one small dose at a time.

We've run the ball well against teams whole defend the run very well, I agree we can do that. But to assume that we can get 3-5 early and often, which I hope does happen, might not be as easy as it seems, at least at first.

I think we need to set the tone early offensively with at least one field-stretching throw (would most likely go to the sideline). This may force the Wisky defense to peel back and open the box up a bit.

Just my $.02

I wholeheartedly agree that CJ will have to be able to throw in order for us to win...I just think we need to wean CJ into the throwing the ball early. Maybe if we pick up a first down or two on the first drive, we can then go deep and first down and try to catch them off-guard...

I don't disagree. I'm simply looking for a bigger surprise element early in the game. And I'm not implying that we throw down field all game, I'm talking about 1 early play. Regardless, I'm anxious to see what happens.

I am expecting Urb's and Herman to take what UW gives them. I don't see them forcing anything. If UW loads the box they WILL throw the ball. Who knows, maybe Marshall will be in as soon as the 2nd snap on Offense. They will have a game plan that will cater to Cardale's strengths but I don't think they are going to be afraid to throw the ball. Field position is going to play a big part of play calling as well. Last year we dominated the field position battle. I am hoping for the same this time around.
One last thing, if Cardale carries the ball on short yardage plays he needs to bend his knees and lower his body. He's too big a target going upright into the LOS.
