QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

Free video per the Scout board, of Cardale at the post Spring game news conference. From watching the Spring Game, I'm of the opinion, Cardale has to improve his accuracy,
and learn to put some "touch" on his passes. Arm strength is not an issue with this young man. I can't remember an OSU QB with arm strength like his?

Braxton has a rifle. So did Troy and Boeckman.

I would be all for taking Jones if we have room...this guy if flat out a playmaker. Obviously he has a gun, but he just needs to discern when to use it. Having seen both though...I like Braxton much better. Braxton is the more polished QB, but he is far from "polished" in all actuality. Both guys are just scraping their potential, though Braxton is further along in his development. As good as Jones is scrambling, I think if Braxton had that skill set around him, you could really see the difference. This isn't just some homer scouting report, it is what I think the OSU staff sees and other schools.

Additionally, look at the situation. As unionfutura has pointed out, we wanted to get a polished QB this year because if Guiton doesn't pan out, we are going to be mighty thin. Graham was a solid pickup but it looks like he may have real issues staying healthy. If we are forced to only take 1, the choice would have to be Miller because there is a fairly high chance we could need him to step in early. While the sky is the limit for Jones, he will need more time to develop. However, let's hope we can take both if Bridgewater loses interest in being a WR, OSU, or both...speaking of which, I feel a "Braxton vs. Bridgewater vs. Jones" merger coming. Good discussion though./quote]

I would love it if CJ earned the right to be in that conversation!

Wouldn't be surprised if Cardale sees the field quite a bit even if Barrett is the starter. At the very least I think he'll get a lot of short yardage carries, like a young Tebow or someone like Blake Bell.

Why would we need a QB for short yardage carries when we have Rod Smith and Brionte Dunn? I think Cardale may spell Jt at times, but Urban IMO sticks with Jt. He won the QB job, last thing we want to do is yank a kid and mess with his head. Give Jt all the confidence and get behind him.

There are plenty of good reasons to do it. Tactically speaking, you have an extra blocker on those plays. On certain variations you can attack the line more quickly without having to make a read or handoff. And not that this is in the playbook much any longer, but you can start the play from under center and attack from closer to the line instead of handing the ball off 5-7 yards deep in the backfield.

I agree with the second part of your point though - Barrett is going to be the guy and I don't really see situational substitutions being a significant part of the plan. One factor that nobody is talking about yet is that by losing Miller they didn't just lose a star and a starter, but they also lost depth at the QB position (insofar as what they had could be considered "depth".) This team is now one play away from starting its 3rd string QB. It's probably best for that player to be preparing as if he might be called upon to start and run the full offense rather than preparing mainly for goalline packages like some sort of bullpen specialist.
