QB Antonio Henton (transfer to Ga. Southern and FT. Valley St.)

No, he will have no shot at starting, whatsoever. The Coaches have neither the desire or intention of playing the best players. Their minds are already made up as to who will and will not start three years from now.

Note sarcasm......

I agree. I'm kind of hoping for a late December bowl this season, it makes the week after Christmas that much more interesting. :wink2:

Again I'm not sayin the coaches are goin to favor one guy or the other but if both kids are back ups why not just give both of them equal amount of game reps? If their playing time is meaningless to begin with why should it matter? this is a perfect time to see what both kids can do in game situations. Imagine if we got far enough ahead in 2003 to see both Zwick and Troy in game situations and all the sudden it was obvious who was the better gameday QB was(obviously Troy). We might have saved ourselves the complete misery that was our 2004 offense had the coaches known Troy was going to be so special, but they went with Zwick because he had atleast some reps in a game.

I'm not sayin Henton will be the next troy but rather I'd just like to see more of him because I'm kind of worried that in two years they'll play Robbie just because he has more game experience and nothing more.

I agree with everyone that Henton will not see a start in this season, but I would love to see him get some reps that are not in "Mop up".

What if TB was the starter and we used Henton in a few formations ( Like we used Teddy in the Alamo Bowl in 2004 ) Give him a few plays that only have 2 reads - If they're not there, tuck it and run.

I don't want what we had with Zwick and Troy in 2005 and I don't want TB to feel his job is on the line. I just think it would be nice to see him get a series or two earlier in the game, maybe when Tress feels the game is in our control - but, not over and his snaps still have meaning. I just hate having that type of talent on the sidelines...

If anything it would get him ready to be the signal caller in the next year or so...

That won't happen......primarily because going into the 2005 season, Smith was the starter. If he wouldn't have been suspended, we would not be having this conversation right now. None of the QB's on the roster have the experience that Smith or Zwick did going into 2005.

 Which is what they did, imo. Robbie got 1, Henton got 1. Robbie got the last drive of the game. You can't split an odd number of series evenly.

Not sure I agree with this statement, especially not with this timetable.

They didn't go with Zwick just because he had a few reps, they chose the better QB. Troy admitted that he did not study film like he should have early in his career.

Troy brought a spark and compensated for a shoddy OL nicely. He also benefited from much easier defenses, and two rising WRs (as opposed to Zwick's 1 double-teamed WR).

Another thing is how will the coaches ever know if Henton can handle the offense or not if they don't give him 2 series like they gave Robbie??
Because someone has to be 2nd string, don't they? Did you want them to pull Robbie out halfway through his 2nd drive to be truly equal? I could understand this complaint if Robbie got two series, leaving Henton with only one... but they catered to a 3rd string QB when they did not need to do so.

Like all the players Henton has to earn his reps. And don't forget how loyal JT is to his seniors

Fellas........unless we lose a couple of games, Henton will not get much PT this season IMHO. I guess that I'm in the category thinking that this kid has a ton of potential, but the coaches do not trust him with the offense just yet. Now, that could all change if the offense sputters. They'll be more willing to give him a shot.

If Todd B. is steady.........then Henton will have another season to prepare for his breakout season.

No one is saying Henton will supplant Boeckman as the starter, but rather jump over Schoenhoft as #2. As for getting PT, Tressel will get his #2 guy some snaps in garbage time, sort of like he did last year with Zwick. In fact, the #2 guy this year will probably get more garbage time snaps because although Zwick was #2 last year he had plenty of game experience whereas our #2 this year doesn't.

What was most significant to me was that both backup QBs were given the green light to chuck it all over the field with a bunch of true freshman receivers running around ... none of that, 'turn around, hand it to the running back, and try not to trip when pulling out from under center,' which is what we have seen almost exclusively from our backups for the past several years when garbage time rolls around.

I mean, Boeckman has been the 3rd string QB since Bobby Hoying was here, and he'd thrown a grand total of 10 passes in all his garage time appearances.

Call me crazy, but I thought that Henton only got that one series rep because of his success. AH threw a handful of great passes, so I thought, given the scrimmage nature of the game, that RS got a couple more reps for another shot/for him to get comfortable with game reps. I thought Henton looked very sharp and Robbie needed a few more reps to get comfortable game action, which is what he got. It still seems to me its an interchangeable 2a and 2b.

Troy Smith was a scout team stud for a few years...lagged behind when it came to practice reps. However, when that leash was loosened on the scout team, he shined. Gamer.

Henton has been inconsistent in practice...Rob has been solid in practice.

Thrown in the fire, Henton shined, Rob white knuckled.

Plenty of things can be coached, but your reactions in the fire tell the story.

Not annointing anyone yet or counting anyone out...but (limited) first impressions under fire were not even close in my eyes.
