The PS3 is still (according to Sony and their devs) something on the scale of 25x more powerful than the PS2. Even if your TV doesn't support 1080p/HDMI, you should still see a drastic improvement in the visuals just because of the higher resolution textures, draw distance, and increased triangles.
Same question... for 360. Any idea whether the improvement is drastic/worth it?

They do not sell the 20 gigs anymore. Also I have never seen the PS3 on a NON-HD TV so I can not comment, but one would think it would be pretty useless.
Which is unfortuante, I grabbed one and any laptop HD works.. install whatever you want if 20s not enough. The PS3 looks awesome on non-HD but when i hooked mine up in theater with the 7.1 digital audio it's a pretty sick little machine

I have a regular old-style tv and basically just want to buy a 20GB console. Does that mean I have to go out and buy a new tv?Should I even bother?

Yes you should. I have two, one HD and one non-HD- YES HD is way better and worth it. The PS# is working on (slowly) upgrading itself into a great PS2 player. If you dont NEED it and made it this far. Wait a couple months to see if the price drop does hit.

The Blu-Ray player is wonderful and all the Home Theater magazines love it except for it lack of HD audio output. The Best audio is the old Fiber out.

You cannot buy the 20Gb PS3 anymore though. It was discontinued in March due to lack of demand. The only PS3 available in the US is the $599 60Gb version. The PAL versions being released in the EU have been bumped up to 80Gb hard drives, but the US likely will never see this version, since there are about 1.9M 60Gb units still in warehouse in the US from the launch production line that are unsold.

Its too easy to upgrade it yourelf anyways. Buy a 150-200g hard drive, add windows or something and you got a computer and PS3 in one neat package.

GameDaily BIZ: Report: PS3 $499 on July 12

Report: PS3 $499 on July 12

Although Sony has yet to confirm a price drop officially, GameDaily BIZ has received confirmation from the retail sector that the PS3 will be dropped to $499 next week. Sony itself recently talked about "refining" the PS3 price. Now it appears to be happening.

A PS3 price cut rumor spread like wildfire across the Internet this afternoon when several sites spotted a new advertisement from Circuit City. The ad as seen on Kotaku lists the PS3 console at $499.99, $100 less than its current price.

Ad attached ...

FWIW, Sony is officially denying a price drop, while Target, Circuit City, and Best Buy have all confirmed the SKU was dropped to $499 in the systems and their circulars and new in-store displays are all printed and in hand.

Sony will probably announce the price drop at E3, and are just hedging right now because admitting the price will drop next week would kill their sales at $599 for this week.

We're Slashing Prices: Sony Confirms PS3 Price-Cut, 80GB Bundle - Kotaku

Sony Confirms PS3 Price-Cut, 80GB Bundle

David Karraker has confirmed that starting today, the 60GB model of the PS3 will drop to $499. Excellent, if not entirely unexpected, news. Better still is a second announcement: that North America will be getting their hands on the 80GB model of the PS3 (to help with Sony's plans for HD movie downloads), which will be bundled with MotorStorm, and will cost $599 (though won't be available until August).

Not sure that this will help Sony all that much. The market for $500 consoles is only a little bit bigger than the market for $600 consoles, and the net effect is that the price hasn't been lowered at all, they're just trying to clear their 1.9M excess launch units that have been warehoused since November to replace with an updated SKU including 33% bigger HD and a copy of Motorstorm.

Until the price comes down to $399 or lower, they're still going to get outsold 4:1 by the Wii, and 2:1 by the 360 in North America. What's really puzzling is that the price drop is for NA only, and Sony really needs the boost in Japan, not America. For June the PS3 was outsold by the Wii 7:1 there.
