Premier League (Official Thread)

Game treated like a glorified training session, according to Sir Alex, but sometimes messages are sent.

City continue to fire shots across the county limits with their Dubai checkbooks. City leads at half 2-0 after a Lescott header and Dzeko corner shot.

Actually can't wait to read the headlines admonishing the Glazers (by certain groups) tomorrow.

Not really a good half from the United backline, but it's understandable considering it's a new goalie and they haven't worked together that long (and de Gea doesn't speak English too well).

Premier League starts tomorrow. I think the title will be between Manchester City and Manchester United.

3rd-Chelsea
4th-Liverpool
5th-Tott
6th- My Arsenal maybe 5th. 4th is the best they can do.

Fabregas and Nasri look like they will be gone in the next few days and Arsenal really haven't done much in the transfer market. Doesn't look like it will be a good year for my team but I am excited to see Van Persie up front with Walcott and Gervinho. Ramsey and Wilshere along with Song in the midfield shouldn't be too bad. The back 4......yeah I got nothing. I would like to see more of Gibbs this year.

I know we have few Man U fans on here. What do you Premier league fans expect this season?

Losing Fabregas absolutely hurts that team. But adding Gervinho to the team certainly helps. He should be a real treat to watch.

I see a league finish as follows:

1. Manchester United
2. Chelsea
3. Manchester City
4. Arsenal
5. Liverpool
6. Tottenham

ManU: Return most of the players from a pretty good team, to go along with the emerging Welbeck, Cleverely, Jones, and the addition of Ashley Young.

Chelsea: I think AVB has his work cut out for him, but if the midfield can regain the creativity that made their attack so potent in 09/10, then they can surely challenge for a title.

City: Yes, they have added Aguero, but the only creative maestro for them in midfield is David Silva. If Mancini lets them free a bit they are one of the most talented sides in world football. I think they will go as Silva goes. Balotelli scores 15 goals this season in my estimation.

With standings like this, look for Man. City to really make a push at the Champions League this year. Good lord this soccer season is going to be a blast.

OK, so I'm still a bit of a free agent when it comes to the EPL... I've watched with some interest from afar but have never adopted a team. Anybody care to offer some suggestions?

Here's where I am at this point:

  • I won't support Man U. They're the Yankees and I'm not WolverineMike :tongue2:.
  • I won't support Liverpool because of Quitness and his ownership stake.
  • I'm not inclined toward Arsenal - they seem like the Red Sox of the EPL.
  • Chelsea seems like they're the Washington Redskins of the EPL - no thanks.
  • Fulham seemed promising at first - then I went to their website and saw their Michael Jackson shrine.
  • I'm thinking Spurs or Everton at the moment - Neither of them are frontrunners, but both can usually be counted on to be in the top half of the table within shouting distance of an occasional berth into Champions League qualifiers. I'm leaning toward Spurs since I've always been a Brad Friedel fan (fully realizing that at his age he won't be with them very long). I'm also leaning toward Spurs because all other things being equal I'd rather follow a team in London since it would seem to increase the likelihood that I would see a match in person one day. Lets' face it - the attractiveness of vacationing in Manchester or Liverpool seems to be non-existent.
Any input from the crowd before I take the plunge?

Sure, go with the Spurs. I've hated those fuckers since that Fatass (later) Paul Gasciogne beat Nottingham Forest in the 1991 FA cup final.

No, really. It's true.

Be a man and go QPR.

Well...Everton has a yankee keeper...so if you won't support Chelsea then I'll cast a vote for 'the other blues'..but I will admit I root for the Spors..they always round into form and make a mid season charge that turns them into a dark horse to grab a champions league spot. Each time they find a new way to avoid having to play all of those extra games by coming up just short..but it makes for an exciting run.

I love the fact that I don't have a team. I try to follow the entire EPL, and occasionally watch a French, Spanish, Italian, German, or Dutch league game. I find that I enjoy actual impartiality while watching world class athletes at work. I have enough of "my teams" located in a radius that I can actually attend a game if I want, and, if I happen to travel to England, I don't want to limit myself to experiencing one team, or feel obligated to see that one team play.

Ah, the difficult decision of which EPL club to support. Any self-respecting sports fan will refuse to support ManU, Chelsea, Man City or Arsenal. Any self-respecting Cleveland fan will refuse to support Liverpool.

But you also want to make sure the team you support is going to be in the Premier League year in and year out. So mark off Wigan, QPR, Swansea, Blackburn, Norwich City, West Brom and Wolves.

That leaves Tottenham, Everton, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Fulham, Sunderland, Bolton and Stoke City.

Tottenham is the only one of those teams that realistically has a chance of winning the Premier League title if all the chips fall their way. The rest are mid-table with a ceiling of 5th or 6th at best.

But this is where soccer is great because you still have the rest of Europe to choose from when it comes to the Champions League. This year, I'm rooting for Napoli and Barca - the latter only because they pissed on ManU last year.

Manchester City. They get the players they need, not want (Chelsea). The team is stacked top to bottom with stars.

Dzeko, Adebayor and Aquero as your strikers. (Assuming Aguero was brought in to replace Teves although they'd make a disgusting combo)

David Silva, Gareth Barry, Yaya Toure, Nigel De Jong, and Shaun Wright-Phillips as your midfielders

And an extremely solid back line including: Gael Clichy, Joleon Lescott, Kolo Toure, Vincent Kompany, and Micah Richards.

The more and more I look at this team, the more I like their chances in the EPL this year.

If it wasn't for Man City snagging up Sergio Aguero, I'd be rooting for Aston Villa this season despite the fact that they got rid of their best midfielder in the off-season (Ashley Young)

One of my good buds is in the same position, though he's never followed soccer at all. My little advice...

"2 options...Fulham- oldest professional soccer (football) team in London, middle of the pack, but improving and competitive, history of signing American players, and they have Clint Dempsey, who is awesome. Everton- very historic team, Tim Howard, who is also awesome, and an in-town rivalry with one of the big boys, Liverpool."

Then he asked about Spurs saying he had heard some good things..

"Spurs will give you a little more competitive club- top 6, with chance at the top 4/Champions League spot. Big rivalry with Arsenal (North London derby) that plays a big role in gettin that important 4th spt. Nothing against them & they have a gamecock sitting on a ball for their logo, so yeah."

His decision...

"it's lookin like i'm gonna go with the spurs. couldn't get behind everton and their pink kits and fulhams owner seems a little crazy (why the hell is there a michael jackson statue outside their awesome stadium?)"

So yeah, looks like this EPL craze may add to the Spurs supporters list. Good squad to follow, so no complaints from me. I never really fully adopted a team. Was an Arsenal fan when I was a kid because I only really knew of Henry. Fulham always had my interest with McBride. Then I didn't care for a long time. Donovan to Everton brought me back. So right now I lean towards Fulham, but get behind Everton too.

Villa is a decent choice with Randy Lerner as their owner too...though that means they will probably never win anything.
