Pre-Season Practice - 2005

I was surprised by how the DL was schooling the OL in 1 on 1 pass blocking. I know how hard that is, but I would expect them to do better. Their twist pickups were pretty bad as well. Carpenter destroyed Boone at least once, but I guess I can understand why guys would look slow going up against Carp and Kudla.
I didn't really see any of the drills where JZ had to move around, but his passes looked good. He looked pretty accurate and threw a couple good deep balls. TB probably threw the worst in this practice. He had one pick at the end that was a stupid throw. TS looked ok in limited time, he had a nice one to Ginn at the end. I don't really remember anything RS did.
I did record it on my DVD player so I'll have to watch again later if I have the time.
I am really worried about our OL technique. Both times Boone got beat (only once to Carp) in 1 on 1 pass blocking his first step put him in the hole. This should have been corrected the first day of camp. It's kind of sad that I can look at the OL and be certain that I could do a better job coaching them than JB.
I'm also worried about how they run plays. JB had them run one play and then said "Oh they overloaded that side, we can't block that." They overloaded the left side, but the right side was weak. Audible to a play to the other side and gash them! The defense was giving them the edge to the right. IMHO our blocking schemes suck, but they have always sucked as far back as I can remember. It seems like our coaches rely on having better players rather than putting the players in a better position to win. Ok rant over.

DAMNIT.

My recording computer crashed before it was set to record it and now I don't have the show. Sorry folks. This isn't very encouraging, but I'll give it another chance to redeem itself by recording the '69 Rose Bowl which I saw was showing on ESPN Classic this Friday.

I appreciate your concern Exhawg, but I think most plays that they were running today were vanilla to say the least. I wouldn't expect them to get to deep in the playbook with ESPN in town. Perhaps you should apply for an OL coaching position. :wink2:

i find your rant to be amusing... i guess maybe you missed the part where Speilman and whoever it was were talking about how the coaches put the team in certain situations in practice, so that they can recognize it in games, and make the correct adjustments... there are a couple points that you need to remember: 1) the coaches PUT the O and the D where it was, and overloaded that side on purpose -- it's not like Heacock was out there calling plays against Bollman... and 2) the O was not allowed to call audibles... at all... the O only ran the plays that the coaches called... so the coaches knew beforehand that the O-line couldn't block that overload, so there was obviously a lesson involved...

i hope that calms you down a little...

Two blocks?? Does anyone know anything about them?
Per Bucknuts:

On one of Huston’s two blocked field goals, it appeared that lineman Tim Schafer skied to bat the ball out of the air. On the other, it appeared he barely got the ball to helmet height and it was easily blocked.

“I have to look at the film, Huston said. “I don’t want to put the blame on anyone else. I know on that second block, I didn’t get it high enough. The first one, I don’t know what happened on that. I thought it was all right, but I’ll have to go back and see what happened.

I can live with 8 of 11 type consistency on a lot of 40+ yarders.

Trepasso news is just icing on the cake.
Yeah, not to mention only 1 was a missed field goal and that they were kicking multiple times in a row. Thats gotta be hard on the legs. I think with that consistancy, we are set on a solid kicker.

We want to be able to block punts this year as well as execute them, so as with any intrasquad competition bad news is also good news. Would love to think we have a punt defense squad that is tought to block.
