Pre-Season Practice - 2005

They were saying that Troy would be getting less reps since they were already putting in some stuff for Miami and since he wouldn't play in that game that there wasn't a need for him to run w/ the 1's and 2's as they prepared for the opener. They did say that he got his fair share during individual drills.

That was great to watch. I like that Brandon S has been moved to TB. I think this means that we are planning on using a lot of one back sets and he will be responsible for picking up blitzes as well as running.

They showed Carpenter coming off the edge a few times. Do you think that the staff plan on having four lb sets with Freeman?

I guess I should elaborate a little on Zwick since a lot of people weren't impressed. He threw some nice balls when he was dropping back in the 7 on 7 drills. Earlier in the practice during the screen drill when he had to move around a little bit he didn't look so great. And as many people have said, hopefully that is just some leftovers from the ankle injury.

Not to be picking on anyone, but we really shouldn't read TOO deeply into this practice. Mild speculation is fun, but it was only an hour long, it wasn't full pads, most of the drills were about 60% it seemed (maybe a little higher but surely not 100%), even when they did get into the team portion they still weren't going full go. So to say that this practice proved how good we are going to be this year is a little over the top in my opinion.

I think we are going to be better than everyone outside of Buckeyeland expects. The only are I see that we might need a couple of guys to step up is the D-line. I wish Gholston was not hurt. Looks like they intend to rush Carpenter alot.

I'm not worried about the OL,RB,PK, Punter, or CB. Rush ends and quality depth on the DL is still a ?
The players, as well as Heacock said we were switching to a Blitz Defense this year. I guess they are intending for Carpenter to be the main bllitz from the LB Corps. This is stricking to me, as I figured Schlegal would be the main blitz as Carpenter showed last year to be a much better coverage LB than Schlegal. But, Im sure they have thought it all out. I cant wait till season starts - that was a nice teaser!

From a Robbie S. standpoint.........remember he was running with the 3's or 4's...so he probably will look a little better.

I don't read into too much of this, it was fun to watch though. What stood out was Boone getting bitch slapped by Carpenter, and Wilson's quickness to me. Thats about it.

This is, I think, necessary. If you think about this past years game against Michigan, do the Bucks get a win without Branden Joe pushing the ball out to the 20 from the 1-yard and 3-yard lines on those 99-yard and 97-yard drives? Depite all the heroics of Troy Smith, Ginn's return, Gonzo's early score, etc ... etc ... without Joe punching the ball out of the end zone to start long drives, the result could have been ugly. Since all the scholorship backs are pretty light, it was really a no brainer to move a FB and a LB too to TB for short yardage situations.

That's the story. Freeman has to be on the field, he's too good to ride the pine. The report is that the defense will use both the 3-4 and 4-3, and even shift between them on the field to disguise coverage, blitz Carpenter, and get Freeman some PT. Sounds like Carp will be used similar to the way the Patriots move around Vrabel, including as a TE.

I was surprised by how the DL was schooling the OL in 1 on 1 pass blocking. I know how hard that is, but I would expect them to do better. Their twist pickups were pretty bad as well. Carpenter destroyed Boone at least once, but I guess I can understand why guys would look slow going up against Carp and Kudla.
I didn't really see any of the drills where JZ had to move around, but his passes looked good. He looked pretty accurate and threw a couple good deep balls. TB probably threw the worst in this practice. He had one pick at the end that was a stupid throw. TS looked ok in limited time, he had a nice one to Ginn at the end. I don't really remember anything RS did.
I did record it on my DVD player so I'll have to watch again later if I have the time.

edit- After watching it again I have a few corrections. RS threw the pick that I said was TB and TB had the nice pass to Ginn at the end that I said was Smith (don't know how I messed that one up). TS had some issues with the short passes and screens.

Man I tell you what I was really impressed.

couple things.

This team will run the ball, the way the backs were hitting the holes and busting out side seems like something we havent seen in years.

Wilson will play. He is quick as hell.

QB's still struggling, but I think they will be ready. Zwick likes the post corner route.

Wr's strong as always.

Defense is going to be awesome.

Second team is also very good.

Carp was impressive coming off the end as is Kudla.
