Pre-Season Practice - 2005

All in all special teams is a lot like recruiting for me, ever since JT arrived its been great due to the importance he places on it. I keep an eye on it but pretty much just put my faith in whoever JT selects for the job.

The mere fact we have a kick scrimmage every year is all I need to tell me we'll have above average special teams at the very worst.

Yeah, not to mention only 1 was a missed field goal and that they were kicking multiple times in a row. Thats gotta be hard on the legs. I think with that consistancy, we are set on a solid kicker.

Don't forget that his one kick directly into the LOS is still a miss, and blocks are exponentially more dangerous than straight misses. If the second block was purely the result of Schafer getting good penetration and getting up high enough to block an otherwise well-kicked ball, then that's two misses (straight miss and the low kick). While 9 of 11 will be a pretty decent replacement for Nuge, blocked kicks will not be.

Look, when it comes to OL play, I defer to 'Hawg. If he says it needs fixin'--it needs fixin'

As far as Boone is concerned: perhaps he's having some trouble with the transition? in HS, he could just maul people--although it seems to me that he had decent technique. At OSU, he's gotta be in perfect form, with his head in the game, and a hell of a lot faster than he's used to having to get there. Remember Bolls reminding him not to 'wind up'? He's working on his sequencing, it seems, and bear in mind that OL is one of the more difficult positions to transition from hs to college. He'll come around soon enough, and when he does, he'll be a monster. and we'll be happy.

We want to be able to block punts this year as well as execute them, so as with any intrasquad competition bad news is also good news. Would love to think we have a punt defense squad that is tought to block.
I agree and I'm not going to put too much emphasis on the misses. Fact of the matter is that we got the best of both worlds...not only were some great kicks executed but we had a once in a blue moon block...something I have rarely seen out of our team before. I will play the optimist in this scenario and say that this was as good an outcome as any

All the reason why we wont be able to tell - wether we have a solid special teams Defense that can block kicks hell-good, or a kicker that may be kicking a bit too low and was going up a tough special teams Defense - untill Sept. 3rd.

I'd be worried if Carp DIDN'T knock the freshman on his ass. The fact that he did is a good thing, not a bad thing.

On a side note, I liked seeing Amos intercept Zwick's deep ball to Ginn. No, I don't like the fact that Zwick threw a pick, I like that Amos went nose to nose with TG and won. Even if it was for one play in a practice, it was nice to see.

That was Schoenhoft who threw the ball too late and underthrew the deep pass to Ginn. He will learn. Other than that throw, and a couple of times where he didn't quite understand what the play was supposed to be, he looked pretty good.
Zwick threw some very good balls, and a few very ugly ones as well.
