Post-Game Post Mortem - Penn State

1) Do you still think that Troy Smith is clearly the best QB and the man to lead this team?
- As much as I see Smith struggle, I highly doubt putting Zwick in there would be a quick fix.

2) Do you still think that Antonio Pittman is a great running back?
- Great, no. Decent, yes. He's no where near Clarett level, if that's what you're asking.

3) Do you still think that the Buckeyes have the best group of wide receivers in college football?
- Pure talent, yes. I think that if you put Ginn and Holmes on a more pass oriented squad (such as USC), then they'd really be able to shine.

4) Do you still think that this team has more talent than the 2002 squad (which was ranked the #16 team of all time by Billingsley's)?
- No. No where near 2002.

5) Do you still think that this is a national championship caliber team?
- Nope. Really, the only chance we had of getting to the National Championship was if USC lost. Because the Longhorns have a very easy schedule for the rest of the year.

I have a few impressions and yes, some of them may have already been said, but I post so seldom.

I wonder if the glanville gang doesn't have too much control. Tress said he starts smith cause the players rally around him. Too bad they don't do much at the rally.
Smith doesn't seem to see the field and makes choices horribly. I often wonder if he has his mind made up to run or stay in the pocket before the snap. No thinking qb would make the mistakes he does.
T. Ginn has pulled a big daddy. he had a big year, made a name for himself and now has disappeared. Is he protecting himself for the pros?

WE NEED AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR - WITH THE PLAYS WE ARE RUNNING NOW WHAT OUTSTANDING OFFENSIVE KID WOULD WANT TO COME HERE. With all the options why do we see smith getting most of the plays. A BIG TIME OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR WOULD HELP RECRUITING. Could he co-exist with Tressel though ? But Tress needs to see that this offense can't come back in big games. We did in the NC year because we had mr. cool at qb.

Where was our best money receiver GONZO . We threw to Hamby but none to Gonzo. hamby makes the mid field receptions, but he goes blank on important ones.
We have Robby S. so no need for a qb as the major recruiting effort.
A tight end should be a major recruiting object.
All this talk about recruiting QB's, Ohio state hasn't recruited a top notch runner since one year and out disloyal buckeye. maybe the wells kid coming in can do it. With some of the young linemen we have, we should be able to get a good one.

I just hope that santonio doesn't get frustrated and leaves early.
I would play Roy Hall at TE on the goal line.

I have pluses and negatives about the defense. Jenkins was killed early in the game. He needs added experience before we use him more. At least the coaching staff sat him down.

On the big play the PSU came up short in the 4th quarter why did we rush only 3. They blew right by us and the lbers were too far down field. At least that was corrected on the next series.

This will be unpopular. I never liked Tress from day 1. true he won the NC and I realize we can't win every game, but he lacks any imagination in the offense.
We need a new assistant offensive coach that can motivate the guys. They don't seem motivated. maybe it is the playcalling, maybe the glanville gang.

TEXAS and PSU were both winnable games and we lost on National TV. I am tired of hearing about fast linebackers and want to hear about wins.

Very disappointing. True PSU had a good defense, but we were mindless out there.

Alright everyone, I'm saying this here because I think everyone is going to read this thread. There is one reason I joined this sight and post exclusively here: because this is hands down the best Buckeye site out there, full of intelligent posters that love Buckeye football and that (for the most part) stay positive about what's going on with the team. A lot of threads have been popping up tonight about various aspects of this loss, and this season. I think we should try to limit the discussions to as few threads as possible. One has to go no further than any given scUM sight to see an example of whiney, complaining fans. WE LOST A TOUGH GAME. IT SUCKS. However, we have nothing to be ashamed of in our two losses. Texas is the best team in the country right now...not USC. We lost to a very good Penn St. team that is for real. We are in no position to second guess a coach that won us our first NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP since the great Woody Hayes, or these players that play their hearts out for this great university each week. I don't blame anyone for constructive criticism, but there is a lot of complaining going on that should not be happening. Again...Penn St. is a very good team. Soon to be a Top 10 team. Lets all move forward and look ahead to the rest of the season, because it is not over. We are still, IMO, one of the top 10 teams in the country that can hang with, and beat antone out there. Need proof? Go watch Texas DESTROY everyone they play... and then re-watch their game against THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES. 10-2 will be nothing to be disapointed with.:osu:

Nothing to add -- worth bumping.

Clarity,

Are you by any chance from Glanville?

A top 10 team doesn't have this many losses so early in the season. I think we are very good, it just that we are 3-2 looking in, but not in.

So that rah-rah post which you copied and pasted was inspiring, but perhaps best given to the team pre -game. This board is here not only for us to rejoice in victory, but to interact with fellow buckeye fans after a loss. That is important. i live in jersey by Penn. Do you think I will be able to have a decent conversation with the PSU grads. Civil yes, but not the ability to discuss what I saw last night on TV. One would hope to feel comfortable in doing this here instead of reading a post that suggests that this board is intelligent since we only see the positive in the game. people with intelligence can read between those lines and quite frankly since you have a few thousand posts, I know you can do more than cut and paste. Unless you are from Glanville. ( Relax- that is a joke).

Since Clarity runs this site, I am certain that he knows what "this board is here ... for", and he can *probably* do more than "cut and paste". And no one has questioned Clarity's intelligence before (but go ahead and be the first....).

BTW, it's "Glenville", not "Glanville".

Just curious, which part of your post was supposed to be the "joke"? The whole thing?

My takes:

1. Smith is the best QB on the team, but he's not good. A fourth year Junior shouldn't be throwing a pick like the one he did. Calling all these keeper and option plays may help move the offense, but everytime its called, there's one less snap where this kid can get accustomed & learn how to stay in the pocket and deliver the ball to the playmakers.

2. Tressel seems to have 2 bug-a-boos: 1. he can't beat Wisconsin (1-3), and 2. he has severe troubles winning in Happy Valley. He lost a bad game there in '01, he barely beat a very overmatched PSU team (21-20) in '03, and of course, last night.

3. To me, its inexcusable that this team has 2 losses. With or without our problems at QB & RB. I can't point the finger at any one person, but to me, this is a joke.

Hmmm....here's a good idea. After a tough road loss, we'll come to BP and make fun of Clarity :shake:
Hey, genius: while you're at it you might want to talk some smack about grad21, nutty, Mili and anyone who has "moderator" next their avatar.
