Post-Game Post Mortem - Penn State

Yes, you're right. It was good of Tressel to choose a guy and stick with him- you can't expect to develop a solid QB if you're constantly changing them in and out. But I think he chose the wrong guy to stick with. I don't think JZ was given enough of a chance.
Not disagreeing with your assessment, just commenting on the irony....

1) Do you still think that Troy Smith is clearly the best QB and the man to lead this team?
He's the best of the 2 that we have seen.

2) Do you still think that Antonio Pittman is a great running back?
He's good. He'll get 1000 yards this year.

3) Do you still think that the Buckeyes have the best group of wide receivers in college football?
Ginn is questionable as a receiver.
Not sure why Gonzo didn't get the ball tonight.

4) Do you still think that this team has more talent than the 2002 squad (which was ranked the #16 team of all time by Billingsley's)?
2002 defense was incredible, especially the line.
#13 could run the ball when he wasn't sidelined.
8 home games can't be beat.
No real conclusion, just these observations.

5) Do you still think that this is a national championship caliber team?
That seems obvious by their ranking Sunday.

You are nuts if you believe Smith is better than Zwick.

Several points:
1. If even dumb commentators like Mark May and Bob Davie can see that we're not going vertical with the passing game, then it must be really obvious.

2. Hamby's drop right before the 50-yard field goal attempt probably cost us 3 points. I don't think he "stinks", but I'm bothered that he hasn't really progressed since his freshman year when he showed so much promise.

3. I still think Smith is our best QB. Zwick probably wouldn't have fared much better tonight, based on what I saw of him last year and early this year. I will say that Troy made some poor decisions tonight.

4. So you're telling me we lose one lineman and all of a sudden we can't block anyone? I realize Rehring is out as well, but is anyone else disappointed with Captain Rob Sims so far this season? And why aren't we seeing more of Alex Boone at LT? Datish is not getting it done there.

5. Pittman is not great but I never thought he was. We shouldn't need a great runner to get some yards. I thought he did well when he ran it. But we abandoned the running game in the second half.

6. Why did the defense wait until we were down 17-10 to finally show up? I'm not as impressed as others on this board with the play of the D tonight. We forced no turnovers and Robinson completed way too many passes.

7. No way do we deserve to be ranked #6. We don't block well, we can't find our receivers even when they're open, our only healthy tight end can't catch, and we play too soft on pass coverage.

The defense held Robinson to under 100 yards passing. They allowed 10 pts(No I will not count Smiths idiot Int as the D allowing points)....they were there the whole game.

Zwick would have faired MUCH better tonite because he can see the field beyond 5 yards. He gets rid of the ball quicker. There were PLENTY of times SMith had 4-5 seconds to throw the ball and didn't.

I got an idea, how about we pause for a moment and talk about our defense, we act like the whole game is about offense, how about some positive comments about our D???

1 - I was pleased with the adjustment made by / with Jenkins in the 2nd half.

2 - Kudla is playing well...a couple of holding calls against him were missed.

3 - Notice Robinson didn't take our LB's head on like he did with the Minny SS.

Probably because he played the whole game at RT :roll2:

Yeah, what ever happened to Bobby playing some at TE?

Ive heard comments tonite such as "I would trade every win just to beat michigan"

That is about the STUPIDEST thing a fan could say. Yeah Id go 1-10 every year as long as we beat michigan. Geezez cripes people.

I love beating michigan as much as the next person, but I want to win the game to win the game and improve our record and chances of a better bowl...not because of some vendeta against michigan. Granted its alot sweeter win than beating minnesota or Iowa or Indiana...but there is no way Id trade a good season just to beat michigan.

- The LB's played great (when they werent' getting held every third play)
- The D line held their own, especially in the 2nd half
- Not sure about the secondary. It might have been the play calling, but it seemed like we were giving their receivers WAY too much cusion. Safetys played pretty well, but the DBs seemed to be on their heels a lot.

My heart goes out the the D, though. They deserve a little help.
