Goalie gets ticketed after mooning refs

NORTH LOGAN, Utah - A University of Southern California hockey goalie put on a show, but it had nothing to do with stopping shots.

Mickey Meyer rode his stick like a horse, dropped his bulky pants, mooned the crowd and slapped his buttocks during a game against Brigham Young University, police said.

He was ejected and ticketed for lewdness, a misdemeanor, after an officer who was working security at the rink said he witnessed the scene Saturday.

The junior from Clinton, N.Y., was "riding his hockey stick like a horse and slapping his butt," North Park Officer Mike Stauffer said in a report. After pulling down his pants, Meyer slapped his bare bottom several times, Stauffer said.

Houston charged with stealing cab

SEATTLE -- Prosecutors have charged suspended Washington running back Michael Houston with stealing a cab last October.
Houston was charged this week with second-degree taking a motor vehicle without permission -- a Class C felony -- and driving while intoxicated, a gross misdemeanor. Houston is scheduled to be arraigned in King County Superior Court on Monday; it was not immediately known if he had obtained a lawyer.
Houston was suspended indefinitely following his October arrest. According to police reports, Houston, two other men and a woman were picked up by an Orange Cab at a strip club early one morning. After stopping at a fast-food restaurant, the woman spit on the cab window. When the driver stepped out to call 911, Houston jumped into the front seat and drove off, the police report alleged.

Notes: Duke football player faces vehicle death charge

REIDSVILLE, N.C. (AP) ? A Duke football player has been charged in the traffic death of another driver after a weekend accident.

Raphael Chestnut, 20, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle following the accident about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Chestnut was driving at 65 mph on U.S. 158 in Stokesdale when his vehicle collided with a car driven by Hubert Douglas Smith, 50, of Ruffin, who died at the scene, the patrol said. Chestnut played football at nearby Reidsville High School.

Chestnut wasn't seriously injured. Smith's wife and an infant in his car weren't injured.

The patrol said alcohol or drugs weren't involved in the wreck, which happened on a curve during heavy rain.

Chestnut, a rising junior wide receiver, was second in receptions for Duke last season with 39 catches for 375 yards and two touchdowns.

Players hope to avoid death penalty possibility

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Attorneys for two former Montana State University athletes accused of killing a suspected drug dealer want the state Supreme Court to prevent the prosecutor from seeking the death penalty.
Attorneys for former basketball player John Lebrum and former football player Branden Miller asked the Supreme Court to overturn a Gallatin County district judge's ruling that death is a possible punishment if the men are convicted, according to a 23-page petition filed with the high court last week.

Defense attorneys argue that Gallatin County Attorney Marty Lambert should not be allowed to seek the death penalty because he failed to notify the court in writing of whether he intended to do so within 60 days of the defendants' arraignments.
Not filing the death-penalty paperwork violated Lebrum and Miller's due-process rights and prejudiced their cases, according to the petition.
But District Judge Mike Salvagni ruled that although Lambert didn't file paperwork on deadline, he did include death as a possible punishment when he filed charges against Lebrum and Miller.

Sorry, but if the crime was "heinous" enough to warrant pursuing the death penalty, then the County Attorney should've done his job.

Zook kicks players off team

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - Illinois football players Jody Ellis and Derrick McPhearson ? accused of stealing wallets, cell phones and laptop computers ? were kicked off the team Monday just hours after pleading not guilty to felony burglary and theft charges.

"This kind of behavior will not be tolerated. It is not only disrespectful to this football team, but to the University of Illinois, as well," coach Ron Zook said.

"We will act right and we will obey the law. Period."

The two wide receivers were arrested Friday night after police found suspected stolen wallets, cell phones, electronic devices and at least six laptop computers inside Ellis' car, Champaign police Chief R. T. Finney said Monday.
Ellis and McPhearson, both 20, pleaded not guilty to four counts each of residential burglary and two counts each of theft of property and requested jury trials. After hearing the players' pleas, Champaign County Circuit Court Judge John R. Kennedy set a pretrial hearing for April 10.

Ouch - brings to mind medieval punishments like drawing and quartering.
McNeil will be suspended five practices and not allowed to leave campus for Spring Break next week. He will be required to perform community service, have an alcohol assessment and undergo further "internal punishment," Fulmer said.
