Conley is making a name for himself

After Mike Conley had spent a few months on the Ohio State campus and managed to put on "the freshman 20" through an aggressive combination of diet and weight lifting, strength coach Dave Richardson took him to have his body fat measured.

There he discovered the only place Conley is a flat zero.
"It wouldn't register," Richardson says. "It came back as 'error.'"
You want to know why Conley has been as influential as any point guard, there it is: 20 extra pounds, none of it wasted. He is 6-1, 180, and that extra muscle is the difference between being tossed around like a paper airplane and launching effective aerial assaults on the basket.

The thing I find interesting about this report from the ESPN guy is that he cites absolutely nothing new in his reasoning for why Conley would go to the NBA...even though he said 10 days ago that he would be returning "definitely".

If Conley were to go, or is considering going thats fine...same with Oden...they've both already done so much to help the program, they've dominated every level of basketball they've played at, and if they think they are ready for the NBA...then dammit...they are probably ready for the NBA.

Even with Conley stating he was "definitely coming back", I still wondered if that was changing at all after great clutch performances against Xavier and Tennessee, and the good game vs. Memphis to get to the Final 4. It was fairly obvious that his stock was rising...

Nothing in that report really presents anything new or ground breaking...I hope Conley comes back and I'll continue to think he's coming back until he or his dad tell us differently.

CONLEY SHAKES SKEPTICS AT OSU

Freshman point guard perseveres

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

COLUMBUS - Few believed that Ohio State's Mike Conley Jr. could handle playing point guard in the Big Ten as a freshman.
Standing 6-foot-1 and just 158 pounds when he came to campus, Conley had many skeptics. They included the media, a few teammates -- admittedly senior guard Ron Lewis -- and even Ohio State coach Thad Matta.
``His dad and I were joking the other day in San Antonio,'' Matta said Wednesday, referring to Conley's father, Mike Sr. ``I remember asking him, `Do you think Michael is going to be ready for college basketball?' and he said, `Yes, without a doubt.' He was right.''

Clearly, he's made jump

Freshman Conley Buckeyes' catalyst

By Mark Blaudschun, Globe Staff | March 29, 2007
It should have taken more time to develop. But that has never been Mike Conley Jr.'s way. It wasn't that way in grade school, when he played at a level far beyond his years.
It wasn't that way in high school, when he was a star on a team of stars that compiled a 103-7 record and won three straight state championships at Indianapolis's Lawrence North High School. Not the biggest star, mind you, but perhaps the most vital star.
And it wasn't that way when he came to Ohio State last fall and refused to play the role of a role player simply because he was a freshman point guard.

Conley no longer forgotten freshman

Ohio State guard has played in Greg Oden?s shadow until his stellar NCAA Tournament.

By BLAIR KERKHOFF

The Kansas City Star

ATLANTA | Everybody knew that if Ohio State would reach the Final Four, a freshman from Indianapolis would lead the way.
But few thought it would be that freshman.
Point guard Mike Conley Jr. came up huge in victories over Tennessee and Memphis and was named the regional?s most outstanding player.
As for Greg Oden, the potential No. 1 selection in June?s NBA draft, he averaged 13 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes over the two games. Nice numbers, but below his season average. Oden dominated the Memphis game on the defensive end, and the Buckeyes sagged when he went to the bench in foul trouble.
